Bobbie Gentry is best remembered for her eternal classic 'Ode To Billie Joe', a mysterious tale of heartache and loss which became a surprise phenomenon when it was originally released. With a Southern folk style and a strong instinct for storytelling, Gentry had a stellar run on Capitol which was documented thoroughly on The Girl From Chicksaw County (The Complete Capitol Masters) back in 2018. That eight-CD set took in albums, B-sides, outtakes and more, but that mammoth set is a bit much to press on to wax. Instead, this double LP combs through the finest of the classics and rare material to present an equally compelling case for Gentry as one of the great overlooked soul voices of her generation. Just listen to 'God Bless The Child' and tell us she shouldn't be as revered as Dusty or Nancy.
