RECOMMENDED
Is Charles K. Thompson among the most important voices in US guitar music? We would have to say definitely yes, although you can choose whether to heed our words or not. Recording under the name Frank Black since his legendary outfit Pixies formally split in the early-1990s, the years between then and now have seen him forge a path towards Black Francis, via a layover in Nashville during the mid-noughties to put out some of his quietest ever records and a reformation of said band since the millennium.
Black Francis is the polar opposite, threatening to usurp Pixies for rowdiness and rawness. It's a raucous and uncompromising adventure in rock 'n roll, nodding to blues and punk and rockabilly and never really allowing itself to be pigeonholed as any of the above. Instead, it sounds like Black Francis, and that's all we ever really wanted from the record. Best turn it way, way up, then.
