Time has been kinder on the Beastie Boys' first and most explosive hip-hop album than many would have thought at the time. Their combination of snotty nosed brat rapping and Rick Rubin's trademark production, combining raw, meaty breaks and metal riffs, was assumed to be a flash in the pan back then, but rather a fad it would turn out to be the inaugural offering in a stream of classic albums that would delight heads and also recruit millions of new fans over to the genre's side. Massive breakthrough hit '(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party!)' is here , of course, but the tracks that sound the freshest now are the mean and lean 'No Sleep 'Til Brooklyn', 'Hold It Now, Hit It' and opening track 'Rhymin & Stealin', powered by beats originated by Led Zep's John Bonham. A laugh, yes, but seriously good at the same time.
