Review: Athenian producer Aggelos Baltas gets conceptually deep on his latest album, Earth, as Anatolian Weapons. It is one, he says, that captures a sense of hope for our future that grows from the "sweet bitterness of the present and the past." It is another fantastically polyrhythmic work of percussive ingenuity and authentic Greek folk fusions that unfurls with all the hypnotism of a prime kraut record. There are psychedelic elements, hints of prog-rock, plenty of ancient dancing traditions and future-facing electronics all seamlessly woven together into an album of otherworldly and cinematic moods and grooves.

Review: Sweden has so much to answer for in non-conformist music terms. And Gothenburg is responsible for plenty within that. Take Gustaf Dicksson's renowned Blod project, for example, and its formidable 2023 outing Ondskans Fro. As oppose to the preceding two albums, here we find the man in question flying solo on the mic having previously partnered with fair-voiced female vocalists, lending the record a sense not just of the personal and intimate, but solitary isolation. That may sound slightly sombre, but it shouldn't. In reality, while we often jump to miserable conclusions when we think of words like 'alone', there's no greater strength than our ability to be happy as individuals - self love being a prerequisite to loving anyone else. In many ways, that's a resounding takeaway here. Medieval ambient folk that is warm, inviting, peaceful, and often dreamy.

Review: Apparently critics have been coining the phrase OOIOO-ish to describe the sound of this Japanese experimental rock band meet avant-garde jazz or polyrhythmic progressive sound walls. Those looking for anything but brevity will be in their element, these are epics in the truest sense of the word. And not just in running time. The 11-minute "Walk for "345" Minutes, While Saying "Ah Yeah!" with a "Mountain Book" In One Hand, Until A Shower Of Light Pours Down" might be the longest song name we've ever encountered. It's slow build from staccato warm up into layer upon layer of cosmic greatness pretty much summarising this entire record. Put it this way, you'll not be bored for the duration with this mystic meld of Far Eastern nuances and daring rock.

Review: This album, Picture of Bunny Rabbit, is a treasure trove of Arthur Russell goodness that has been reissued and comes in several different formats. The record features nine previously unreleased performances recorded during the same era in which he wrote his best known album. The unique voice of Arthur Russell was taken away from us all too soon after he was diagnosed with HIV in 1986, but it was in that year that he also dropped his career-defining classic 'World of Echo'. That's the only solo album he produced but he managed to make plenty more music in his final years. These are dramatic, exceptional cuts as you would expect from this cult hero.

Review: Traditionally the liner notes of an album take on a kind of third-party address, where a writer is delivering their thoughts about how an album makes them feel without breaching that space where they are representing themselves or the moment in time directly to the reader. The goal is typically a kind of timelessness, but as we live in unprecedented times, unconventional methods take on new life, and hopefully importance. In the spirit of that idea... man, is this the kind of album we all need right now. So many of us feel like we're constantly walking a tightrope, are feeling like we can't unwind, are in genuine need of a few moments of respite. Every so often an album emerges from an artist that most likely did not realize when they were composing how timely the results would be, and Lofi Dimensions is exactly that kind of record. It doesn't really matter why it's coming when it is, what's important is that it's here, offering peace to the perturbed and inspiration for the downcast. The American Dollar have long been one of those artists operating in a kind of middle ground, a band with a long history of creating moving instrumental rock that has somehow avoided ever becoming synonymous with modern American post-rock acts. They retain a sort of autonomy in a valued position just outside the boundaries of classification. Blending electronic textures with moving guitar and keyboard melodies, their music has always traveled somewhere in the spaces between trip-hop, electronic, post-rock and ambient, and this inability to be defined is ultimately what sets them apart from the trappings of genre, allowing them to be whatever they want The American Dollar to be in a given moment, always on their terms.

Review: Copenhagen-based Jason Dungan, aka Blue Lake arrives on Tonal Union with a stunning album built around inquisitive approaches to zithers, drones, clarinets, slide guitar and drum machines. It's a pastoral record first and foremost, but it's not bound by musical tradition and instead uses the impetus of post rock as a motivation to explore expressive, evocative spaces through composition and instrumentation. There are countless moments of shimmering beauty scattered throughout this vibrant album, which respond to the time he spent isolated in a remote part of Sweden while crafting the bulk of the music.

Review: Fred Frith is simultaneously a singular musical figure and a collection of musical lifetimes. He's the composer who wrote fragile avant-garde music in the tradition of John Cage and Earle Brown, the innovator who created new concepts of underground rock with his colleagues in the band Henry Cow, and the improviser who developed his very own language on the guitar. The many facets of Frith's musical oeuvre shimmer in vibrant and unique colors, but stand as one rainbow monolith of musical creation, never disintegrating into esoteric eclecticism. Always musically curious and unbiased, he develops his ideas in the moment, demonstrating in real time how his creative process, while free of old hat conventions and tricks, creates an immediate yet unrandom and committed music. At the core is his unique guitar playing, which is on full display across these two records. His debut, Guitar Solos (1974), opened up a space beyond rock and improvised music and now, 50 years later comes Fift (2024), a new solo guitar album that sounds completely different and yet familiar, adding to his monolith of musical creation with another new vibrant color.

Review: Julia Holter has subtly shifted focus on new album (her sixth in total) Something In The Room She Moves, moving away from exploring memory and dream-like states to instead focus on (in her words) "the complexity and transformability of our bodies". To create this rather distinctive (and rather good sound world), she added her own ethereal vocals to self-created backing tracks rich in electric fretless bass, warming wind and reed instruments, and distinctive synth sounds plucked from a Yamaha CS060. The results are predictably immersive and soul-enriching, with highlights including stunning opener 'Sun Girl', the percussively inventive 'Spinning', and the pastoral, dreamy 'Evening Mood'.

Review: For those not in the know, Puscifer is the brainchild of Tool/A Perfect Circle vocalist Maynard James Keenan; an outlier side-project designed as "simply a playground for the various voices in my head, a space with no clear or discernible goals, where my Id, Ego, and Anima all come together to exchange cookie recipes." With each of their four full-lengths to date taking completely different sonic shapes, the release of the project's 2007 debut "V" Is for Vagina perplexed, bemused, enthralled and infuriated fans in equal measure upon its initial release. Bending ambient trip-hop machinations and industrial atmospherics around Keenan's lush croons, and enlisting a frankly obnoxious list of collaborators and co-conspirators such as Tool/Kyuss producer Joe Barresi, Primus drummer Tim Alexander, Alain Johannes and former Dillinger Escape Plan drummer Gil Sharone (to name only a select handful), this reissue welcomes both the devout and unfamiliar to visit Keenan's most artistically unrestrained work in its purest form. Review: Robert Fripp's pioneering work in electronic music reached its influential peak with the so-called Frippertronics tour of 1979. Creating compelling soundscapes out of tape loops might not seem revolutionary now, but it certainly was at the time, and out of the tour came this limited and highly prized album, perhaps the most sincere recorded document of Fripp's creative breakthrough.
