Review: Insect Ark is Dana Schechter, who some of you may know from her collaborations with Swans' Michael Gira in Angels of Light and her dark-folk outfit Bee and Flower. The album is said to have been recorded in complete solitude, at her Brooklyn studio. In January 2015, Portland-based drummer Ashley Spungin (of Taurus) joined her, playing drums and electronics. The brooding stoner rock of lead single "The Collector" sets the tone for this album's exploration in the slower, sludgier and textured strains of underground rock. Similarly, "Taalith" or "Parallel Twin" set a rather gloomy mood on these imaginary soundtracks of modern urban decay with grinding bass, wailing guitar feedback and savage drums reaching near tribal moments.
