Review: Steve O'Sullivan's work as Bluetrain ranks amongst the finest distillations of sleek techno minimalism and spatial dubwise sonics. As part of Sushitech's 15th anniversary celebrations, they're doing us all a massive favour by revisiting their comprehensive compilation of the finest Bluetrain joints, replete with a tasty coloured vinyl pressing this time around. The tracks are beyond sublime, riding steadfast, understated grooves, which underpin beautifully sculpted, metallic chord clusters that sink in easy but run deep. If you need a dependable clutch of stellar dub-tech-house workouts to suit full-immersion DJ sets, this essential double pack will keep you trucking long into the morning.

Review: Between 2000 and 2002, Roman Flugel's Tracks on Delivery EP series helped usher in a new era of minimal techno - one built on little more than hypnotic drum machine rhythms and druggy electronic noises. This essential triple-album tells the story of the series, offering up remastered versions of all 15 tracks included on the four 12" singles to date. As you'd expect, it's mostly a collection of surging, stripped-back and mind-mangling techno cuts, but there are also some decent deviations into crunchy club electro and fuller-sounding peak-time workouts. This edition also boasts two previously unreleased tracks recorded during the same period: the super-trippy 'Pattern 16' and the Andrew Weatherall/Blood Sugar-influenced 'Pattern 17'.

Review: Since breaking through a decade ago, Pierre Daniel AKA Pit Spector has spent much of his time collaborating with others, as a quick glance at his bulging discography will confirm. Because of this, it seems rather fitting that the Parisian producer's second full-length (his first dropped a decade ago) is full to bursting with tracks that were either co-produced with others, or feature guest vocalists. It's a move that guarantees plenty of musical diversity, with Daniel's glitchy, tech-house grooves variously being fused with elements of swing-time jazz (San Proper and Dandy Jack hook-up 'Sympatico'), deep acid ('Layback', with Tin Man), hip-house (Dave-Aju-sporting number 'Love Love'), bass-heavy tech-funk ('Prospectin', featuring The Mole) and hazy, jazz-flecked deep house (Goodwill, where Uncanny Valley's Cuthead lends a hand).

Review: With all the unfortunate hassles that label boss Denis Kaznacheev is enduring of late, we're happy to see that he is still getting on with the job of running Nervmusic. Its next release comes from St Petersburg's tech house hero Andrew Guyvoronsky aka Tripmastaz, and it's also the accomplished producer's debut full-length. Andrewsheeny Skazkif features all the functional and swing-fuelled flavour that you've come to know and love from the Plant 74 chief: from the hypnotic and ethereal bounce of 'No Grind - No Fish To Find', or the trippy Sunday morning microhouse of 'Ditch A Broad Of A Wain, Minimise A Horse's Pain', through to the slick boompty business of 'Even Vinegar Tastes Sweet If It's Free' and the evocative deep house groove of "Fisherman Sees Another Fisherman From A Distance".

Review: Berlin's Meander imprint has had a fairly quiet year in 2020, so we're happy to finally hear some new material. Further exploring Romania's fertile musical environment, it is now over to the enigmatic Pirvu, who first made a great impression with his debut on Rummenigge a couple of years back. He's since had some breakout releases on Club Guesthouse, Unanim and Understory. The 1.9.3.6. EP sees the Bucharest-based producer consider the ethereal aesthetic so commonly attributed to DeWalta's label, while incorporating his usual arcane and mysterious properties into this collection of tracks. From the mystical and evocative groove minimalism of 'C'est La Vie Tu Joci Parsiv', to the rolling and hypnotic main room action of 'Simpozion' to the swing-fuelled boompty-funk of 'Condimantsl' which channels that Cabinet Records vibe of old.

Review: Telomere Plastic is a limited edition Wex sub series "sharing electronics from all around the spectrum." This first missive is a strong various artists release, The Telomere Connection, featuring sounds from Sherman C, Rural Red, JD Typo and Anderson. It's a lithe and synthetic affair that kicks off with bendy tones and warped pads while 'Wax On Wax Off' is a more drum-focussed grover with rippling kicks and sci-fi details. The future facing 'Dancefloor Between' gurgles with soft acid bubbles and 'Glider Girl' rounds out in bumpy fashion.

  1. Whisper (7:09)
  2. Freak (7:08)
  3. Faze (7:08)
Review: He might not be able to play his trademark brand of swinging, UK-centric tech-house tunes to the public in clubs right now, but East End Dubz continues to serve up singles packed full of dancefloor-ready treats. His latest missive is predictably strong, particularly A-side 'Whisper'. An impressively atmospheric affair, the cut features lo-fi sounding electronic melodies rising above a chunky, hypnotizing bassline and his usual crispy, snare-heavy tech-house drums. The fun continues on the flip where 'Freak', a squelchy, acid-flecked mid-set bumper built around a limited number of teased and tweaked elements, is joined by 'Faze', which sounds like the sort of thing Sheffield sorts Swag released in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

  1. True Out Of Brew (13:55)
  2. From The Best Sources (12:21)
Review: Berlin based Denis Kaznacheev is a Russian artist who makes slick minimal techno, but he is also embroiled in a legal battle. It is alleged that he has been involved in money laundering and dark web activities and has been arrested by German authorities who are trying to extradite him to the United States to face trial. He maintains his innocence, and this label has been set up to raise funds in order to try and help him. Musically, it's deft and detailed tech with hooky drum loops and wonky synth sounds designed to be heard on hi class sound systems. The A-side track is the first to use is own voice, and the flip was written just before his arrest.

  4. Chris Stussy & Litmus - "Kaizen" (6:45)
Review: Minimal groovemaker Chris Stussy and his most regular home label PIV label are inspired by the 90s-era US house sound. Think warmth, soul, and fluid grooves that come with deft samples that speak to the heart. All of those things characterise his latest outing on PIV across four killer cuts. 'Across Ocean' is a breezy, easy to love and timeless slice of house before 'Seeing & Believing' goes deeper, with a vulnerable vocal and neat chords that bring the feels. There is a more biting tech house edge to 'Independent Woman' and lastly Stussy links with Litmus for 'Kaizen,' with its lush synthscapes and cool electronic sound.

Review: At PIV Records, the imprint's founders are using their Dutch/Indonesian heritage as a cultural aspect to create a unique blended output, which is significantly visible in the artworks and merchandise of the label. The latest release as part of their limited vinyl series comes from rising Utrecht-based young gun Joren Edwards, who is hot off his debut release not long ago on Archie Hamilton's Moss Co. PIV 005 features some swing-fuelled hypnotic tech house jams such as 'Funkaholic' reminiscent of (iO) Mulen or Jack Wickham. It also receives a deep, dark and dirty rework on the flip by legend of the Parisian underground Dan Ghenacia. Alternatively, if you are looking for some quirked out microhouse, check out 'Helling' which is perfect for getting weird at the afterhours.

Review: The pursuit of the perfect fusion of minimal and tech house is an endless one that gives rise to fascinating new music each and every day of the week here at Juno HQ. No Tech Just Wax is a fledgling label who recently threw their own metaphorical hat into the market and this fourth Various Artist EP is another strong one. It brings a certain hardcore edge and punk spirit to stripped back club grooves with the opener from FRNK being a case in point. Elsewhere there is alien-infected sound from DJ WEB, rugged electro and head-wrecking acid. This EP's strengths is in its fantastic variation.

Review: Following up some great efforts by the likes of Dumitrescu and Lizz, for its eleventh edition Priku's Atipic imprint goes beyond the 'Rominimal' sphere. Instead it looks to Argentina for this release, courtesy of scene veteran Franco Cinelli in conjunction with newcomers Esteban Gutierrez and Lux Z. Hypnotic late night mood music awaits on A side cut '011.1' a deep groove with Robert Hood style synth bleeps against a backdrop of lean minimalist drum beats. On the flip, the heady stomp of '011.2' lets the clipped yet very intricate rhythm programming do all the talking - polyrhythmic afterhours bliss if we have ever heard it.

Cat: MSDS 001. Rel: 27 Oct 20
  1. CD (12:18)
  2. Dir (8:59)
Review: The word on the street is that this rather good two-tracker, credited to debutant MS-DOS, is in fact the work of a well-known Italian producer. Whether or not that's the case remains to be seen, but whoever is behind it, we'd urge you to check the clips. A-side 'CD' is a deliciously wayward, off-kilter affair where talking drums, pots-and-pans percussion, tipsy trumpet solos and meandering vibraphone lines stretch out over a loose-limbed, Villalobos-like rhythm track and mind-mangling bassline. The minimal-meets-jazz flex continues on flipside number 'Dir', a heavier and more forthright chunk of early morning minimalism laden with creepy noises, exotic clarinet sounds and South American style drums.

  3. Tom Cat (6:24)
  4. Tom Cat (Spacetravel remix) (8:07)
Review: To deliver their third release since debuting in 2018, from the less-than-prolific DXL Records has recruited Pressure Point, a producer who received plenty of praise for his earlier singles on Sol Asylum, Telharmonic Texture and All On Tape. The Wrong System EP is a quietly impressive return to form, with the little-known producer smoothly moving between intergalactic tech-house funk (the leaping, sci-fi sounds, shuffling drums and bubbly melodies of 'Timepiece'), mind-altering tech-house box jams (see 'Wrong Systems', with its chiming lead lines and hypnotic vibe), and tech-tinged deep house goodness ('Tom Cat'). The accompanying 'Spacetravel Mix' of 'Tom Cat' is also rather good, in part because it features what sounds like a broken modem having a meltdown over bustling machine drums, foreboding bass and soft-touch chords.

Review: En Couleur is the brand new label from long time German techno heavyweight Loco Dice. His mighty Desolat label has been a main concern for years, but now he heads back into the underground with more challenging sounds. 'Don't Run' is dark and menacing, with unsettling vocals and twisted tech house drums. 'Nasty Train' is a tune full of tension that never revolves, so keeps you locked into its wiry synth loops and dry, scratchy drums. Last of all, 'Ya Free Just Move' keeps you in a state of unease with its manic acid, bleak vocals and high pressure drums.

Review: The second release on Opia sub-label Euphoric State offers up highlights from the extensive catalogue of Swiss veteran Dan Piu, a producer who has been serving-up quality house and techno since the late 1990s. There's much to admire across the five tracks, from the sleazy, Yorkshire bleep-goes-to-New York heaviness of opener 'Bleepy at 5Am' and the sumptuous, sunrise-ready, early '90s deep house positivity of 'El Viento De La Noche', to the similarly warming and melodic 'Mimic Human Form' and the impeccable, hip-hop influenced downtempo beats of 'QH 1999'. Best of all though is sleazy, sub-heavy deep tech-house number 'Angry Giant Machine', a cut that's near faultless in every way.

EEE

  1. Track 1 (7:18)
Review: The EEE series may utilise a very simple blueprint - each single-sided, one-track release combines tasty, 21st century tech-house grooves with vocal lifts and instrumental samples from a classic cut - but so far, the publicity-shy producer behind it has yet to put a foot wrong. This ninth instalment in the ongoing series is every bit as alluring as its predecessors, in part because the headline-grabbing Nina Simone vocal samples are used sparingly and dropped into the mix for maximum impact. They mainly appear within the melodious, smile-inducing breakdown, before making way for a return to the track's chunky, seemingly squeezable tech-house groove and sweet, glassy-eyed lead lines. On paper it shouldn't work, but it really does, making this another must-check EEE release.

Review: Minneapolis, circa 95, a young Frederick Freshton smooths down his dapper moustache and experiments with a small but perfectly formed collection of machines. The results remain on DAT for almost 25 years... Until today. Fresh to Assemble Music in every sense, both sides explore very specific vibes. 'Catching Up Winning' and 'Careless' are both stripped back acid techno wildebeests with hard-as-nails kicks and sinewy, spidery grooves while 'Cannibal Groove' and 'His 808' echo with breakbeats he would later become best known for. Pure, honest, simple and timeless.

Review: Astonishingly, well over a decade has passed since the last credited single from Barbara Goes, and that - like much of her early work - was a collaboration with fellow producer (and life partner) John Thomas. This, then, is a significant next step in her career: a debut solo single that showcases her impressive studio skills. A-side 'Aquarela' is a deliciously funky slab of locked-in late night tech-house in which the Brazilian artist adds her own Portuguese vocals, fizzing electronics and alien-sounding synth flourishes to a jazzy-but-hypnotic groove. It's impressive, as is 'Sabor Brasil', a carnival-ready chunk of disco and jazz-funk influenced deep house warmth, and the drowsy, early morning deep-tech flavours of 'BOTSA'.

Review: Polynation's artist alias is apt given the global array of musical scenes the project distills into arresting electronic sounds. Over the course of eight minutes, 'Wildeburg' layers up fine synth craft and progressive melodies to a fine climax. 'Coral' then gets more gritty, with textured bass, motorik kick drums and star-gazing pads all working you into a trance. The second version of 'Coral' is a stripped back version. Much more forlorn and melancholic, it's for deep thought and day dreams, and washes over you to subtly uplifting effect.

  2. Robin Odell - "Backwash" (intro) (5:52)
  3. Rudoh - "Energi" (5:48)
Review: When announcing the launch of his new label No Time County, Robin Ordell said it would focus on tracks that, "bring a feeling of elegance to the dancefloor". There's certainly plenty of polished, slick and ear-pleasing to be found on the label's inaugural release, a multi-artist affair featuring a trio of minimalistic tech-house tracks. Ordell joins forces with Bruno Schmidt as Asper Bothrops on opener 'Track 21', a gently acid-flecked affair built around deep sub-bass, crunchy drums and addictively fuzzy organ stabs. He showcases his own brand of solo elegance on the similarly deep, TB-303-powered hypnotism of 'Backwash (Intro)', before Rudoh steals the show via the rolling, densely layered percussion, locked-in sub-bass and dreamy pads of closing cut 'Energi'.

Review: Italian DJs Jamma & Max have been promoting Bread & Butter since 2008. Well known for the consistency and quality of its events, the London-based party has now established itself on the club scene, carving out their own niche musically and using their nights as a platform. Their third various artist release includes the return of hyped Romanian producer Victor Pavlovschi aka Piktor. It's quality over quantity as far as this young Vienna-based DJ is concerned, and his mesmerising contribution 'Everythingship' is featured on the A side. On the flip more 'Rominimal' awaits, with Miroloja's tough rolling main room groove "Karrezze", followed by Triptil who delivers his typically arcane aesthetic on 'Mrwho!'.

Little We Know EP
Cat: TRAUM V245. Rel: 12 Oct 20
  1. Mr Wednesday (7:06)
  2. Little We Know (6:09)
  3. SEM (6:15)
Review: Longtime main room techno cohorts Extrawelt have sure been around a bit, and later in October will release their latest album Extra Welt Hits on Cocoon. But before that the German pair land on Traum with three more of their muscular and robust analogue workouts. 'Mr Wednesday' is a real teeth clenching ride with a taught baseline snaking beneath slapping hits. 'Little We Know' lightened the mood with airy flute sounds and a more rubbery and warm bassline that does some fine acrobatics. Last of all, 'SEM' gets back to paranoid and dark dystopian techno territory and will keep dancers rooted to the spot.

  4. Terminus (Retptant's Lizard Tech mix) (4:50)
  5. Noxi (DBR remix) (5:14)
Review: Pure Space Recordings hits a fantastic fourth release with IOTA at the buttons. This Detroit artist brings plenty of Motor City sound to his sounds, which fuse electro, techno and breaks into cosmic new forms. 'Terminus' is a tight and bumpy opener to get your shaking those bones loose and 'Cloudtek' then sinks into a chunky tech house groove reminiscent of the early 90s UK scene. There are also more empty and spaced out minimal cuts like 'Noxi' and two superb remixes that bring icy grooves and funky broken beats.

  2. Nearly Forever (6:02)
  3. Foreground (6:36)
Review: After an extended, pandemic-related break, Brawther has decided to re-activate his highly regarded Negentropy label via a second EP on the imprint from former L.B Produce artist Ron Obvious. He begins in trademark style via EP highlight 'Builded Mind', a tech-tinged blend of skipping, UK garage style drums, jaunty sub bass, spacey electronics and deliciously tactile deep house motifs. He continues to fix loose-limbed and weighty garage grooves to deep and intergalactic house sounds on side two opener 'Nearly Forever', before pushing dub style bass to the fore on hypnotic late-night deep house number 'Foreground'.

Out Of Time
Out Of Time (12" Nachpressung)
Cat: KOMPAKT 364. Rel: 26 Oct 20
  1. Out Of Time (9:45)
  2. Out Of Time (Patrice Baumel mix) (8:30)
  3. Out Of Time (instrumental) (9:44)
Review: Well, we're used to hearing Sasha on some progressive tip or, at least, bouncing around in the same space as labels like John Digweed's Bedrock, but here we have proof that the veteran producer is still out to diversify his sound and reach new audiences. The long-time DJ and producer steps up on Cologne's mythical Kompakt stable with "Out Of Time", a magnificently suave and laid-back house bombshell guided by the man's unmistakable prog-flex; this is the sort of gear you want to hear as you step into the dance and sip that first cocktail... a certified mood changer. On the flip we're graced with a few tenacious remixes; Patrice Baumel delivers an eight minute rework of the original, this time filtered through a much housier sort of guise that reminds us of the twilight hours on the Balearic islands' sandy beaches. Check the instrumental too - it'll be a useful DJ tool for sure.

Baseline 87 (Sushitech 15th Anniversary reissue)
Cat: SUSH 04.5. Rel: 26 Oct 20
  1. Baseline 87' (6:46)
  2. Musik For The Dancefloor (6:24)
Review: The Sushitech festivities continue unabated with this bittersweet repress of an all-time classic from the much-missed Detroit figurehead Mike Huckaby. 'Baseline '87' ranks amongst his most fabled works, riding as it does around an irresistibly catchy square wave bass hook and one of those no-nonsense beats that the legendary producer did so well. For the sound of Huckaby in full flight though, 'Musik For The Dancefloor' on the flip soars thanks to the interplay between the pads and chords while retaining that steadfast focus. In memory of a true dance music hero, why not revisit a classic that should be comfortably sat in every record bag?

Vovisme EP (12")

  1. Baba Novabass (6:44)
  2. Dil (feat Mandela) (7:18)
  3. Lamps (6:06)
  4. Mission Accomplice (7:59)
Review: Guy From Downstairs marks his debut on Pleasure Zone with four expertly reduced minimal grooves that are riddled with brain tickling sine waves and icy hi hats. 'Baba Novabass' is a symphony of sleek late night sounds with a catchy groove and 'Dil' (feat Mandela) has a bulbous bassline that ebbs and flows beneath razor sharp percussion. Upping the ante is the more high speed drum work of 'Lamps' with its squelchy stabs and muttered vocal and finally 'Mission Accomplice' layers up late night and jazzy chords with rockets rhythms and a subtly pumping b-line that works those hips.

The First Thing EP
Cat: BLUE 003. Rel: 21 Oct 20
  1. Different Point Of Structure (12:05)
  2. The First Thing You Hear (11:15)
Review: After the first couple of releases by label chief Remus, Rominimal hero Barac Nicolai is handed the reins for the Blue imprint's third edition. Enchanting polyrhythms are undoubtedly the order of the day across The First Thing EP, with the Bucharest-based producer's usual knack for eloquent track titles as well. On the A-side, we have 'Different Point Of Structure' which is a driving and energetic main room workout with subtle dub techno influences and utilising the hypnotic qualities of previous work, while the B-side cut 'The First Thing You Hear' is a more stripped back and minimalistic affair reaching near tribal moments, but this one is definitely more suited to heady afterhours moments.

  2. Dreamy 5D (4:02)
  3. 808 Waterfall (4:33)
  4. Hermerc (5:23)
  5. Dual Nature (3:55)
  6. Unknown (2:40)
Review: After previously treating us to some Underwater Tales and a trip to the Dream Factory, KSKY returns to 10010 Records to celebrate a New Era of Tenderness. In practice, that means serving up a quartet of emotive and melodious tracks that explore the deeper and more tactile end of the electro spectrum. He begins by wrapping fluttering, mind-soothing synthesizer motifs around a bubbly electronic bassline and crunchy machine drums on 'New Era of Tenderness', before adding new age ambient style chords and jaunty lead lines to an even deeper electro beat on 'Dreamy 5D'. '808 Waterfall' is a pin-sharp and positive number rich in yearning chords and starry melodies, while 'Hermerc' sees the producer successfully employ rugged acid lines, punchy drums and gaseous pads.
