Review: En Couleur is the brand new label from long time German techno heavyweight Loco Dice. His mighty Desolat label has been a main concern for years, but now he heads back into the underground with more challenging sounds. 'Don't Run' is dark and menacing, with unsettling vocals and twisted tech house drums. 'Nasty Train' is a tune full of tension that never revolves, so keeps you locked into its wiry synth loops and dry, scratchy drums. Last of all, 'Ya Free Just Move' keeps you in a state of unease with its manic acid, bleak vocals and high pressure drums.

  17. Pattern 17 (bonus track) (5:35)
Review: Between 2000 and 2002, Roman Flugel's Tracks on Delivery EP series helped usher in a new era of minimal techno - one built on little more than hypnotic drum machine rhythms and druggy electronic noises. This essential triple-album tells the story of the series, offering up remastered versions of all 15 tracks included on the four 12" singles to date. As you'd expect, it's mostly a collection of surging, stripped-back and mind-mangling techno cuts, but there are also some decent deviations into crunchy club electro and fuller-sounding peak-time workouts. This edition also boasts two previously unreleased tracks recorded during the same period: the super-trippy 'Pattern 16' and the Andrew Weatherall/Blood Sugar-influenced 'Pattern 17'.

No Time County 001
  1. Asper Bothrops - "Track 21" (9:59)
  2. Robin Odell - "Backwash" (intro) (5:52)
  3. Rudoh - "Energi" (5:48)
Review: When announcing the launch of his new label No Time County, Robin Ordell said it would focus on tracks that, "bring a feeling of elegance to the dancefloor". There's certainly plenty of polished, slick and ear-pleasing to be found on the label's inaugural release, a multi-artist affair featuring a trio of minimalistic tech-house tracks. Ordell joins forces with Bruno Schmidt as Asper Bothrops on opener 'Track 21', a gently acid-flecked affair built around deep sub-bass, crunchy drums and addictively fuzzy organ stabs. He showcases his own brand of solo elegance on the similarly deep, TB-303-powered hypnotism of 'Backwash (Intro)', before Rudoh steals the show via the rolling, densely layered percussion, locked-in sub-bass and dreamy pads of closing cut 'Energi'.

True Out Of Brew

Cat: JFD 001. Rel: 14 Oct 20
  1. True Out Of Brew (13:55)
  2. From The Best Sources (12:21)
Review: Berlin based Denis Kaznacheev is a Russian artist who makes slick minimal techno, but he is also embroiled in a legal battle. It is alleged that he has been involved in money laundering and dark web activities and has been arrested by German authorities who are trying to extradite him to the United States to face trial. He maintains his innocence, and this label has been set up to raise funds in order to try and help him. Musically, it's deft and detailed tech with hooky drum loops and wonky synth sounds designed to be heard on hi class sound systems. The A-side track is the first to use is own voice, and the flip was written just before his arrest.

Nature Reverance
Cat: BASAEC 004. Rel: 15 Oct 20
  1. Nature Reverance (11:20)
  2. Trance Ilvana (12:41)
Review: Are there any more iconic names in underground electronic music than Swiss-Chilean Luciano? He might not be at the peak of his powers but still has a wealth of skills and experience that mean his every release is always well worth checking. Here popping up on Germany label Basic he offers up the brooding atmospheres and floating pads of 'Nature Reverance' atop a rugged and raw drum line. 'Trance Ilvana' is dialled back a notch to ear-tickling frequencies and bubbling bass and drums that are only loosely defined but fully hypnotic.

  2. Luc Ringeisen - "Just Why" (6:59)
  3. Dubfound & Dopustim - "The Short Bed" (11:51)
Review: It's taken over a year - forgivable given the events of 2020 - but finally Moldova label Zimotik follows up its inaugural release with another high quality various artist offering. Bruno Pronsato is a man who has always made a big impact with minimal elects and here gets deep inside your brain and rewires it with trippy sines and deft motifs. Luc Ringeisen's 'Just Why' then constructs a bendy and elastic groove that never sits still and constant chucks out smeared synths and warped pads, and Dubfound & Dopustim's 'The Short Bed' then unfolds on a hiccuping groove, with lava-lamp style daubs of colour drifting up and down the mix.

  2. Orson's House (mix 1) (5:43)
  3. Orson's House (mix 2) (6:14)
Review: Second time around for Transparent Sound single 'Orson's House', a classic chunk of driving, sub-heavy tech-house that first appeared in 2001. The duo's original 'Mix 1' and 'Mix 2' versions - here featured on the flip - are classic examples of the early British tech-house sound, which fused the sub-heavy strut of early UK techno with the sci-fi sounds of Motor City techno and the swinging machine drums of house music. Those looking for a more fully formed, funk-fuelled take should check the A-side 'James Harrison Subfunk Mix', where spacey pads, tweaking acid lines and alien-sounding lead lines ride a chunkier, more energetic groove.

Edition 3
  1. Piktor - "Everythingship" (9:45)
  2. Miroloja - "Karrezze" (7:25)
  3. Triptil - "Mrwho!" (7:35)
Review: Italian DJs Jamma & Max have been promoting Bread & Butter since 2008. Well known for the consistency and quality of its events, the London-based party has now established itself on the club scene, carving out their own niche musically and using their nights as a platform. Their third various artist release includes the return of hyped Romanian producer Victor Pavlovschi aka Piktor. It's quality over quantity as far as this young Vienna-based DJ is concerned, and his mesmerising contribution 'Everythingship' is featured on the A side. On the flip more 'Rominimal' awaits, with Miroloja's tough rolling main room groove "Karrezze", followed by Triptil who delivers his typically arcane aesthetic on 'Mrwho!'.

Review: The pursuit of the perfect fusion of minimal and tech house is an endless one that gives rise to fascinating new music each and every day of the week here at Juno HQ. No Tech Just Wax is a fledgling label who recently threw their own metaphorical hat into the market and this fourth Various Artist EP is another strong one. It brings a certain hardcore edge and punk spirit to stripped back club grooves with the opener from FRNK being a case in point. Elsewhere there is alien-infected sound from DJ WEB, rugged electro and head-wrecking acid. This EP's strengths is in its fantastic variation.

The First Thing EP
Cat: BLUE 003. Rel: 21 Oct 20
  1. Different Point Of Structure (12:05)
  2. The First Thing You Hear (11:15)
Review: After the first couple of releases by label chief Remus, Rominimal hero Barac Nicolai is handed the reins for the Blue imprint's third edition. Enchanting polyrhythms are undoubtedly the order of the day across The First Thing EP, with the Bucharest-based producer's usual knack for eloquent track titles as well. On the A-side, we have 'Different Point Of Structure' which is a driving and energetic main room workout with subtle dub techno influences and utilising the hypnotic qualities of previous work, while the B-side cut 'The First Thing You Hear' is a more stripped back and minimalistic affair reaching near tribal moments, but this one is definitely more suited to heady afterhours moments.

  4. Mimic Human Form (4:47)
  5. QH 1999 (4:01)
Review: The second release on Opia sub-label Euphoric State offers up highlights from the extensive catalogue of Swiss veteran Dan Piu, a producer who has been serving-up quality house and techno since the late 1990s. There's much to admire across the five tracks, from the sleazy, Yorkshire bleep-goes-to-New York heaviness of opener 'Bleepy at 5Am' and the sumptuous, sunrise-ready, early '90s deep house positivity of 'El Viento De La Noche', to the similarly warming and melodic 'Mimic Human Form' and the impeccable, hip-hop influenced downtempo beats of 'QH 1999'. Best of all though is sleazy, sub-heavy deep tech-house number 'Angry Giant Machine', a cut that's near faultless in every way.

Review: Alessio Viggiano & Akyra's Meslow label is back with another solid various artist EP that's perfectly built for the dancefloor. On MSLW003 we have four killer tunes: Ukranian KiRiK delivers some sublime bass driven tech house awash in hypnotic elements on 'Highway', and Russians Lost.Act follow up with the Cab Drivers influenced boompty business of 'Eludom'. On the flip, Israeli producer Stephan Bazbaz delivers the EP's standout moment with the mesmerizing afterhours minimal funk of "Datune' and the Italian duo Jonny'N'Travis close it out with the rolling drama of 'I Call U Back'.

Cat: YM 003. Rel: 05 Oct 20
  1. Hazard (6:06)
  2. Simplistic (6:16)
  3. Night (6:10)
Review: Josh Baker and Alfie Jack were locked down in Devon for two days, and what we have here is the music they cooked up in that time. t's straight down to work on opener 'Hazard', which marries jacking Chicago drums with bubbling melodies and bulbous synth sounds. It's one for both head and heel such is the fusion of both cerebral and visceral qualities. There is a more playful sense of funk to the skipping and airy drums of 'Simplistic', which harks back to someone like Glenn Underground, while 'Night' closes with a mid-90s tech house fluidity that Terry Francis would be proud of.

  5. Dual Nature (3:55)
  6. Unknown (2:40)
Review: After previously treating us to some Underwater Tales and a trip to the Dream Factory, KSKY returns to 10010 Records to celebrate a New Era of Tenderness. In practice, that means serving up a quartet of emotive and melodious tracks that explore the deeper and more tactile end of the electro spectrum. He begins by wrapping fluttering, mind-soothing synthesizer motifs around a bubbly electronic bassline and crunchy machine drums on 'New Era of Tenderness', before adding new age ambient style chords and jaunty lead lines to an even deeper electro beat on 'Dreamy 5D'. '808 Waterfall' is a pin-sharp and positive number rich in yearning chords and starry melodies, while 'Hermerc' sees the producer successfully employ rugged acid lines, punchy drums and gaseous pads.

Cat: TRAUM V245. Rel: 12 Oct 20
  1. Mr Wednesday (7:06)
  2. Little We Know (6:09)
  3. SEM (6:15)
Review: Longtime main room techno cohorts Extrawelt have sure been around a bit, and later in October will release their latest album Extra Welt Hits on Cocoon. But before that the German pair land on Traum with three more of their muscular and robust analogue workouts. 'Mr Wednesday' is a real teeth clenching ride with a taught baseline snaking beneath slapping hits. 'Little We Know' lightened the mood with airy flute sounds and a more rubbery and warm bassline that does some fine acrobatics. Last of all, 'SEM' gets back to paranoid and dark dystopian techno territory and will keep dancers rooted to the spot.

Review: Telomere Plastic is a limited edition Wex sub series "sharing electronics from all around the spectrum." This first missive is a strong various artists release, The Telomere Connection, featuring sounds from Sherman C, Rural Red, JD Typo and Anderson. It's a lithe and synthetic affair that kicks off with bendy tones and warped pads while 'Wax On Wax Off' is a more drum-focussed grover with rippling kicks and sci-fi details. The future facing 'Dancefloor Between' gurgles with soft acid bubbles and 'Glider Girl' rounds out in bumpy fashion.

  2. Cedric Dekowski & Felix Reifenberg - "Pichler" (8:11)
  3. DJ Void - "Messina Bay" (7:50)
  4. DJ Void - "Dolphine Tribe" (5:33)
Review: BinarySound welcomes a trip of new names to the label for a fourth EP which wisely instructs us, Don't Drink Chloroquine. So long as they keep up serving tunes as good as this, we shall do whatever they want: 'Neptuning' is silky and spaced out cosmic tech funk from another dimension, while Cedric Dekowski & Felix Reifenberg's second collab, 'Pichler,' is more slow motion, wonky and unhinged with chopped up sounds and whirring machines making for an off-grid groove. DJ Void then initially heads off into space on his gurgling synth modulations and smooth house grooves on 'Messina Bay' while 'Dolphin Tribe' is a high speed techno trip with metallic drums and pixelated pads from the future.

  1. Albatros (9:07)
  2. Attabeat (7:29)
  3. Attabeat (Topper remix) (7:05)
Review: Since launching their offshoot label in 2018, Ibiza Record store More Than Music (MTM) has offered up a string of rock-solid singles from the likes of Triptil, Mihai Pol and Arapu. The White Isle-based imprint's latest recruit is sometime Eastenderz and Infuse artist Lorenzo Chiabotti. He sets his stall out via bold and ear-pleasing title track "Albatross", where a variety of sparkling, sun-kissed synthesizer riffs and funk-fuelled TB-303 acid lines buzz around a bouncy, bass-heavy tech-house groove. Over on side B it's all about "Attabeat", a smooth and spacey slab of tech-house warmth that Topper subsequently turns into a two-step-influenced dance through low-slung grooves and drowsy, deep space pads.

Skies Over Sheffield EP
Cat: SHR 000. Rel: 07 Oct 20
  1. Skies Over Sheffield (3:23)
  2. Skies Over Sheffield (Luca Lozano Sunshine On Sharrow mix) (5:59)
  3. Skies Over Sheffield (96 Back Eccy Beach Heatwave mix) (7:17)
  4. Skies Over Sheffield (John Shima Rainclouds Over Renishaw mix) (6:08)
Review: After acrimoniously parting company with Warp Records - a label they helped to establish - in early 1990, Forgemasters (Rob Gordon, Winston Hazel and Sean Maher) continued recording music, most of which has remained unissued ever since. 'Skies Over Sheffield', which Hazel rediscovered on a DAT tape last year, is one such cut. Featuring typically skittish, electro-influenced drums, weighty sub-bass and a mixture of rave-igniting stabs and picturesque organ motifs, it's a genuine lost classic. The must-have original mix comes backed with a trio of 2020 reworks by Sheffield-based producers: a hardcore influenced breakbeat interpretation by Luca Lozano, a bleeping electro revision by 96 Back, and a rolling, futurist house remix from John Shima.

Across Ocean
Cat: PIV 030. Rel: 16 Oct 20
  1. Across Ocean (7:04)
  2. Seeing & Believing (6:28)
  3. Independent Woman (6:06)
  4. Chris Stussy & Litmus - "Kaizen" (6:45)
Review: Minimal groovemaker Chris Stussy and his most regular home label PIV label are inspired by the 90s-era US house sound. Think warmth, soul, and fluid grooves that come with deft samples that speak to the heart. All of those things characterise his latest outing on PIV across four killer cuts. 'Across Ocean' is a breezy, easy to love and timeless slice of house before 'Seeing & Believing' goes deeper, with a vulnerable vocal and neat chords that bring the feels. There is a more biting tech house edge to 'Independent Woman' and lastly Stussy links with Litmus for 'Kaizen,' with its lush synthscapes and cool electronic sound.
