Review: Fans of stripped-back, minimalist techno - particularly the Eastern European variant focused around Romania's thriving scene - will happily tell you that every release from Christi Cons and Vlad Caia's Sideways Invisibility Theory project (AKA SIT) is worth checking. This, a double-pack containing half of the tracks from their new album (a second part is also available) is certainly noteworthy. It features a quintet of trippy, low-slung late night workouts seemingly designed to operate in the cracks between tech-house and minimal techno. There are naturally subtle variations throughout - a nod to dub techno here, a psychedelic acid line or dreamy deep house texture there - but throughout, their focus remains firmly on wonky early morning workouts.

Review: 11 years on from DJ Koze's one and only commercial mix, 2004's All People Is My Friends for Kompakt, the Pampa boss lines the 50th DJ Kicks mix, following high profile contributions from Nina Kraviz and Actress. This vinyl edition offers the best of both worlds really, featuring some 17 highlights of Kozalla's selection in their original form spread across two slabs of vinyl whilst !K7 have also thrown in a CD copy of the mix so you can hear how it's all done Koze-style. As you'd expect Koze presents one of the more far-reaching selections in the series, with Madlib-produced Freddie Gibbs nestling up alongside William Shatner, Boards of Canada remixes, Broadcast whilst the likes of Marcel Fengler, Session Victim and Frank & Tony offer some deepness.

  1. The Robots
  2. Spacelab
  3. Metropolis
  4. The Model
  5. Neon Lights
  6. The Man Machine
Review: 'The Man-Machine' is closer to the sound and style that would define early new wave electro-pop. Less minimalistic in its arrangements and more complex and danceable in its underlying rhythms. Like its predecessor, 'Trans-Europe Express', there is the feel of a divided concept album, with some songs devoted to science fiction-esque links between humans and technology, often with electronically processed vocals ("The Robots," "Spacelab," and the title track); others take the glamour of urbanization as their subject ("Neon Lights" and "Metropolis"). Plus, there's "The Model," a character sketch that falls under the latter category but takes a more cynical view of the title character's glamorous lifestyle. More pop-oriented than any of their previous work, the sound of 'The Man-Machine' in particular among Kraftwerk's oeuvre had a tremendous impact on the cold, robotic synth pop of artists like Gary Numan, as well as Britain's later new-romantic movement.

Review: Jan Jelinek has made many fine albums over the years, under both his given name and a handful of occasional aliases. One such pseudonym was Gramm, a handle he plucked out of thin air for the release of the now celebrated 1999 full-length "Personal Rock". Here that set is given a deserved 20th anniversary vinyl reissue, allowing a whole new generation to investigate the dusty nooks and crannies of one of the producer's most techno-centric releases. It is every bit as sample-heavy, glitchy and crackling as his other work, whereas other outings explored skewed hip-hop beats and downtempo grooves, "Personal Rock" was more informed by the steady pulse of dub techno, the deep space fluidity of ambient techno and the locked-in hypnotism of original era minimal techno. The results are out of this world.

Review: Sushitech's second chapter of their Tessera compilations has been in the making for over two years. It's not hard to understand why, however. This monstrous 5 disc release is riddled with techno killers of the highest calibre, from start to finish. We knew that these guys were reliable purveyors of fine electronic dance music, but this is a truly impressive showcase, and surely up there with the likes of Ostgut Ton. In fact, this compilation goes even beyond the immediate techno remit. It's difficult to pick out the highlights here; everything is solid, and even the opening dub echoes of "Prelude" is enough to get us salivating. There's a rare appearance on the dubbed-out deep house of "Skank" featuring Rhauder, Steve O'Sullivan makes a sleek appearance, Delano Smith offers two magnetic pieces of Detroit magic, XDB's "Frost" is nothing short of spectacular, and even Efdemin's glitchy, minimalist deep house seems more poignant than usual. This is a big'un - don't miss it.

Review: Innervisions bosses Frank Wiedemann and Kristian Beyer return as Ame, and present their first full length entitled Dream House - described as a home listening styled journey. The German duo spent three years working on the LP and it features collaborations with legends of German electronic music such as Roedelius and Gudrun Gut, as well as Bolivian singer David Lemaitre and Jens Kuross - who was a member of Wiedemann's other venture The Howling, with Ry Cuming. Highlights include their dramatic collaboration with Matthew Herbert "The Line", the upbeat disco number "Blind Eye" (featuring Planningtorock), the chill balearica of "Positivland" and the evocative/melodic dreamscape of "No War".

Review: Since the first pressing of Binh's Ship of Imagination double-pack sold out at the tail end of 2016, demand for the record has rocketed online. Happily, My Own Jupiter owners Edume and Nicolas Lutz has bowed to demand and quickly sorted out this re-press. It's a fine record, with the producer effortlessly blending elements of Detroit techno, electro and chunky deep house rhythms with the kind of spacey synthesizer sounds and razor-sharp TB-303 lines most commonly found in early '90s British "intelligent techno" records. In other words, it's sounds like the kind of set that could have been released around 1994 by one of the greats of our scene.

Review: Having launched with a various artists double pack last year, The Untold Series returns with a new release that retains this approach, as well the yellow and black vinyl colour scheme, "respectively representing the sun and the darkness". Entitled Chapter 1, this double vinyl release features eight new artists whose productions still fall under the banner of spirituality that seems integral to The Untold Series. Very much an international collection, South American Furz commences proceedings with the Latinised minimalist "420error" and from here Chapter 1 runs the gamut of minimal techno with particular highlights coming from Andrey Zots and exercise in broken techno abstraction, Pheek's playful "Interne", and the Villalobos-esque "Regarde Le Ciel" from Suburbs. Review: A mere four years after making his 12" debut on Fathers & Sons Productions, Samuel Andre Madsen delivers his debut album on Delaphine, the label he set up to release his music back in 2013. There's much to admire about Dream State of A Bellmaker, which attractively drifts between undulating ambient bliss, deep and melodious techno shufflers, evocative electronica, becalmed drone explorations, and atmospheric compositions that define easy categorization (see the electronic jazz/ambient/dream house fusion of "Better To Have Loved"). It's a hugely enjoyable and entertaining set, full of intricately programmed and life-affirming music.

Review: Berlin-based Organic-Music was established in late 2007. The project at the time was about creating daytime parties in outdoor locations and getting music lovers together in peaceful places - close to the nature. The imprint has over the years joined the dots between deep house, minimal, tech-house and dub techno, with that same style of curation all over "The Collected Visions Of Organic" - their 20th release. They are celebrating with a big bang if this whopping compilation effort is anything to go by, with highlights coming from mighty Frenchmen such as Joule boss Janeret (on the ethereal groove action of "Comet"), Parisian scene veteran Djebali (with Bazbaz) on the deep and dirty "Abraxas", through to Rominimal heroes such as NTFO on the rolling and hypnotic "Sureshot" and local label staples like Diego Krause and Nick Beringer - the latter doing his usual deep and sensual thing with the slinky "These Phases".

Review: On his first solo release for some three years, Robag Wruhme is in a retrospective kind of mood. "Wuzzelbud FF" has been trailed as a "stylistic follow-up" to 2004 debut album, "Wuzzelbud KK", with the long-serving German producer stating his desire to make some "straightforward music for the dancefloor". It's certainly true that the set contains some genuinely serviceable club cuts - see the mildly foreboding techno growl of "Provol Eto", delightfully metallic and wonky tech-house bump of the title track and creepy stomp of "Veddel Braav" - but there's so much more to it than that. Elsewhere on the set, Wruhme memorably turns his hand to glacial ambient, turn-of-the-90s ambient techno, B12 style IDM and, on the memorable "Maiowu", the kind of Squarepusher and Autechre style madness that would once have been called "drill and bass".

Review: Minimal and tech-house DJs went wild for the first, double album-length missive from Germany's OFFM label, so we expect this follow-up to sell quickly, too. As with its predecessor, there's much to get excited about on OFFM number two, from the breezy synth stabs, undulating blissful melodies and bubbly rhythm of DJ Meme Generator's "Lowlife" and the throbbing tech-funk of Non Paying Buyer's "Pressato", to the deliciously spacey wonder that is Tomi's "Moti", where dreamy chords and intergalactic electronics ebb and flow above a rolling Paris-style tech-house groove. In other words, it's another top-notch selection of well-produced club cuts.

Review: Whether this is merely a double-EP or an album is a moot point, because either way it's Sequalog co-boss Etienne's most expansive release to date. It's every bit as alluring as his much-discussed EPs on Traffic, Art Of Dark (a split effort with Evan Baggs) and Undersound Recordings. Check, for example, the foreboding tech-house funk of "3rd Nuke", the mid '90s Orbital style dancefloor melodiousness of "Forget Me Not", the bleep-laden electro crackle of "All About", the analogue-heavy bounce of "Lies Inc" and the "peak time in a dark warehouse" flex of stab-happy stomper "The Doubtful Guest". Arguably best of all, though, is creepy dancefloor destroyer "Information Society", which sees Etienne wrap clandestine minor key melodies around a booming, "LFO" style bassline.

Review: John Talabot joins the likes of Scuba, James Holden and Motor City Drum Ensemble to contribute to the long running DJ-Kicks mix series that's deftly proved there's still mileage in the commercially released Mix CD despite this podcast heavy age we live. The usual double LP edition culls ten cuts from the weighty 27 track mix which the Hivern Disc lad has described as "not an easy mix. It's quite strange". If you've seen Talabot DJ you know the Barcelona based artist digs deep and that's represented well on these ten cuts, with Andy Stott's lurching take on Maps and the similarly minded Tempel Rytmik ( the new project from Talabot and Alexander 'Genius of Time' Berg) contrasting nicely with the more effervescent house from Axel Boman, MCDE and Paradise's Deep Groove. Kudos too for the inclusion of Samo DJ's "Tai Po Kau"!

It's his seventh solo full-length (and fourth for Koelsch institution Kompakt), following his Berlin inspired 2010 LP Gute Luft. The multi-talented composer and long standing member of The Orb embarked on a deep journey of soul searching while recording the album - and in the process incorporated elements of art, disco, minimalism, jazz and funk. A collection of glacial and textural dub introversions as best exemplified on "Lowenzahnzimmer" or "Morrislouis", but he also makes room for moments of pulsating hypnotic dancefloor dynamics ("Triggerism") and moments of lush ambient bliss reminiscent of his work with Dr. Alex Patterson on "Geworden".

Review: Since releasing his fine debut album Offseason Traveller in 2013, Aera releases have been sporadic at best. Although there have been odd singles here and there (including a brilliant 2017 out on Hivern Discs), fans have been made to wait for this long-promised sophomore set. Aera (AKA Aleph Music founder Ralf Schmidt) claims it's his most personal and coherent work yet, and we tend to agree. Largely unconcerned with making people dance, the album offers up a melodious, far-sighted and largely ear-pleasing blend of ambient, electronica and IDM cuts variously inspired by new age, kosmiche and krautrock. Of course, there are hints of the producer's usual left-of-centre take on house and techno throughout, but it's the uncluttered beauty of the album's more downtempo tracks that makes the biggest impression.

Review: Swedish producer Axel Boman seems to have been around forever, delivering solid and occasionally sensational deep house. In fact, he first emerged in 2009, and somewhat surprisingly Family Vacation is his debut album. It's a rather impressive beast, if truth be told, offering a whirlwind trip through his inspirations, from the downtempo analogue wooziness of "Let's Get Nervous" and jaunty, jazz-wise, US-influenced deep house of "Son of a Plumber", to the dreamy electronics and off-kilter rhythms of "No! No! No! No!", and the Theo Parrish-goes-Calypso vibes of "Bottoms Up". Most impressive of all, though, is the dark, humid, tropical pagan flex of "Kings & Emperors". Its' African voodoo atmosphere offers a startling alternative to the quiet positivity found elsewhere.

Review: Anders Trentemoller was the noughties' greatest crossover star. From his humble beginnings releasing sleek tech house on imprints like Naked Music, Audiomatique and of course Berlin's Poker Flat - who released his modern classic The Last Resort in 2006. It gets a much deserved reissue here. Trentemoller went on to form his well received In My Room imprint, and go on to headline festivals and pack out stadiums with his acclaimed live show since. The Danish producer's debut album is actually appearing on vinyl for the first time here on a triple disc gatefold and featuring all 13 songs. The album received fantastic acclaim from both fans and journalists around the world and made it into the top-lists of the month, year and decade - alongside an array of awards for best production or best album.

Review: Sascha Funke has been a busy man this year. After several 12" releases and remix projects, he finished his second
album in his new studio. You can definitely hear, that Sascha still has the six months he spent in Aix-en-Provence in his
mind. Sacha's new album goes by the beautiful title 'Mango', out on the Bpitch Control label, and it is just great. Gernot
(one half of Modeselektor) was really digging the new tracks, when he first heard them he asked for a copy right away,
as according to him "this is the most mature music Sascha ever did". Like its forerunner 'Bravo', you can expect nothing
like 08/15 speed- techno with 140 bpm - but a fresh and direct, catchy sound. Sascha's demand for techno, amongst others,
is the directness that is created by the structure of his tracks. On the other hand, you can associate something with every
single song on the album. Mr. Funke definitely found his style and knows how to prevent boredom. Every track is full of surprises.
'Mango' is the perfect opener for this album, as it begins to slowly introduce the emotions of the further tracks.

Review: Back in 2015, Petre Inspirescu popped up on Mule Musiq with Vin Pholie, an album considered a significant departure from his previous work. While he made his name with club-ready, heavily textured takes on tech-house and minimal techno, Vin Pholie saw him work with piano, strings and woodwind instruments for the first time, resulting in a set that sat somewhere between ambient and neo-classical. Vintul Prin Salcii, his belated follow-up, explores similar sonic territory, adding in vintage synthesizers and occasional nods to dub techno - see the becalmed pulse of "Miroslav 3" - to slightly broaden the approach. The result is a melodious sequence of musical movements that also doffs a sly wink to krautrock synthesizer pioneers as well as classical composers, American minimalists and ambient legends.

Review: Having given keen listeners a healthy preview in his Fabric live mix last year, the artist formerly known as Stopmakingme delivers his full-length album for Erol Alkan's Phantasy Sound. It's a limber brew that channels a strong dose of analogue trickery through smart and snappy beat constructions, all bubbling, aquatic synths and troubled delays propelled by unfussy drum patterns so that the melodies can do the talking. Primarily this is a dancefloor album, moving from peppy breakbeat driven numbers to gently bumping house, but always the playful, ineffably warm synth work sets the tone, from "Naive Response"s robotic charm to "Drone Logic"s soaring grind. It's an album brimming in confidence and nailed with precision, and it's packed full of incredibly usable floor rockers to boot.

Review: After previous travels through space in the minimal constellation on records for Binh's Time Passages and Vera and Alexandra's Melliflow label, Berlin-dwelling Italian producer lands himself an impressive debut on the mighty Perlon. Fresh off a new Fumiya Tanaka LP and that superb Margaret Dygas 12", Perlon are operating on all cylinders at the moment and this debut Spacetravel LP is a fine addition to the label canon. Some eight tracks deep, the cannily-titled Dancing Therapy already sounds like a future Perlon classic, breezing from hypnotic reduced house ("Kill Divas") to haywire techno deviations via stripped down minimal DJ tools. Dancing therapy indeed!

Review: While he's barely paused for breath in the last decade, it's still been eight years since Fumiya Tanaka delivered his last album, Unknown 3. The epitome of long overdue, You Find The Key is his fourth album. Interestingly, it sees the 44 year-old, Japanese producer tweaking his now familiar bass-heavy minimal techno blueprint. Thrillingly, the bass lines are bolder and jauntier, and the beats jazzier, resulting in an altogether funkier take on the minimal techno style. Of course, there are still moments that recall his previous work - see the deep and dubby "Swallowed Memory" - but it's those that take a sideways step towards funk-fuelled pastures ("Munich Uncertain", "The Only Your Researching") that stand out.

Review: The ever-essential deep house super group Mandar make the leap to an album in fine style after a few years of unbeatable EPs on their own Oscillat Music label and elsewhere. The self-titled LP is spread across a whopping five 12"s, but it gives latecomers a chance to catch up on some of their previous smashers such as "La Bocca" and "Delon" as well as presenting some fresh wares from the joint creative forces of Lazare Hoche, Malin Genie and Samuel Andre Madsen. The grooves bump just right, the moods unfurl like toffee-flavoured smoke and with these 12 jams Mandar prove once again why they're at the top of the deep house game.

Review: HVOB's fourth full length, "Rocco", is undoubtedly the Viennese duo's most expansive and ambitious work to date. It's a conceptual work, with the two LP set's 13 tracks being linked by "connected narratives" that explore "letting go, farewells and new beginnings". While there's a weightiness to the concept, the resultant music is surprisingly diverse, with the duo offering up both all-out dancefloor moments and more reflective home-listening fare that's in turn cheerily positive, introspectively melancholic and wholeheartedly poignant. Highlights include the piano-laden downtempo bliss of "2nd World", a swirling vocal number that increases in intensity as the track progresses - the breakbeat-driven, wall-of-sound sparkle of "Bloom" and the drowsy, heart-aching tech-house-pop of recent single "Panama".

Review: Since launching back in 2007, Innervisions' Secret Weapons series has been consistently impressive. Its' various EPs and compilations feature tracks that have been doing the business in the sets of label chiefs Dixon and Ame, some of which have never previously been released. Part 8 is the most expansive volume yet, with 13 tracks stretched across four weighty slabs of wax. There's naturally plenty to enjoy, from the cinematic creepiness of Mosca's "In This Life or The Next", and the dreamy, slow-building wooziness of Prins Thomas' remix of Fred Und Luna's "Im Klanggarten", to the undulating, soul-flecked goodness of "Blind" by David, and the late night, broken techno brilliance of Culoe De Song's "Judgement Day".

Review: Kris "Karizma" Clayton doesn't do things by halves. Wall Of Sound is his first full artist album since his 2007 debut A Mind of His Own and in CD format features a slightly daunting 39 tracks spread across the two discs. This accompanying double vinyl release pares down the tracklisting considerably but still brandishes some fifteen cuts, ensuring it's still quite the epic and will take a few plays to truly get your head around its intricacies and stylistic shifts. It's safe to say, though, that it's a pretty tasty set, effortlessly flitting between soul-flecked instrumental hip-hop, broken beat, intense percussion workouts, slick US garage and deep house in all its forms.

Review: Cadenza head honcho Luciano has arranged a special series of EPs to coincide with the 15 year anniversary of his revered imprint, launching the first one here to begin the festivities. This chapter is dedicated to the summer season and contains five enchanting tracks with exquisite sounds. There are moments of lush and hypnotic freefall like on "The Amazing Lilou" and equally impressive when he dives deep into the exotic like on "Hiding Hearts" or "La Tirana Del Oriente" - the latter featuring wonderfully employed classical instrumentation. Elsewhere, lose yourself in the sonic sorcery of "Magik Mechanics" and its superb melodic minimalism - classic Luciano. Each episode of the series will be released every season.

Review: Techno stalwart Mr G was inspired to make the tracks showcased on his latest album while prepping "jazzy tracks" for a Worldwide Radio appearance alongside pal Kieran Ifill aka K15. Subsequently it's a fair more varied and musically expansive collection than we've come to expect, with tracks ranging from the vibraphone-laden house shuffle of "Praise" and bluesy downtempo grooves of "Strollin'", to the smoky jazz-dance business of "My F'ed Up Mixer", percussive "Hollywood Swinging" and bruk-up, jazz-funk influenced beauty of "That Blue Moon Feeling". It relies far more on dusty samples, hazy audio textures and non-linear beats than much of the producer's vast body of work, but that's no bad thing. In fact, it could well be one of his most ear-catching and entertaining excursions yet.
