Review: Featuring the collective talents of Dan Ghenacia, Dyed Sondorom and Shonky, it's little surprise the Apollonia project has swiftly become a force to be reckoned with in house music over the past two years. Less a production unit, more an excellent DJ tag team and label collective, Apollonia output to date has been the sole Trinidad 12" issued through their eponymous label back in 2013. A debut album then is something of an ambitious move, yet Tour a Tour demonstrates the Parisian trio are more than up to the task. Said to be inspired by their unified approach to Djing, the album consists of 13 tracks that ramp up the intensity deftly in a manner to reflect a DJ mix. French legends Phillip Zdar and Alexkid lend their considered touch to proceedings throughout.

Review: After a quiet 2016 thus far Och's Autoreply label is finally back in action with a frankly fantastic selection of workouts from Mark Broom. In keeping with the style Broom has been exercising in new Perbec jams with Baby Ford, this is more restrained than the muscular techno Broom can also be known for. Instead, you get expressive, satisfying house tracks such as "18.2" and the neatly pumping "10" with its killer array of synths to satisfy the dancefloor and the mind in equal measure. Avoiding unnecessary fireworks in favour of perfectly chosen and shaped elements, this is a glittering demonstration of Broom's cool-headed approach in the studio.

  4. Beam Me Up (feat Charlene Soraia & Scuba - Hercules & Love Affair remix)
Review: Will Saul's labour of love finally makes its first appearance with this single for !K7, which sees the producer delving into a synth-pop blend that equally champions his house roots, with a little help from Scuba and Charlene Soraia's vocals. As well as the sultry tones of the original, there's plenty of premier league remix action to be enjoyed on this EP, with George Fitzgerald dropping a lean tech house pumper. Scuba meanwhile brings his own "Dub Of Doom" version that builds on a harmonious swell of melancholy, ultimately leading to a glorious peak time drop. Hercules & Love Affair bring the spiciest mix with their acidic version letting a wonderfully wielded 303 lead the way alongside some deadly organ business.

Review: Following up some great ones by Matthias, Alec Falconer and Z@p & Santiago Uribe, Tone Dropout main man Darren Woollard returns with a new release of old school techno workouts for London's Art Of Dark. Indeed, prepare to turn on, tune in and drop out to the early '90s influenced bleep 'n' bass experience of "Something's Going To Happen", hear the drummer get wicked on on the acid-washed breaks of "Compute'' while B side cut "Rhythm Activated" is exactly kind of wacky new rave fantasy you'd hear on the dancefloor at Hoppetosse or the Libertine label parties in Berlin. More wicked material by an underrated legend - tip!

Review: "The debut release from new label, music makes us, comes from prolific producer Ekkohaus. a man who needs no introduction with previous releases on the likes of Moonharbour, Morris audio, Circus Company, 2020vision and Liebe Detail. He delivers a blistering 3 track acid tinged ep which kicks off with "Block Parties (Dark Entry)", a driving acid bassline with a great vocal layered on top. "Show You Saw" on the b-side is a grooving acid house track, whilst "The Wack" finishes off this debut release in syncopated style."

Review: The 110th release from Kompakt Extra comes from Extrawelt, a long-serving electronic band from Hamburg that has previously impressed via albums and singles on Traum Schallplatten, Border Community, Darkroom Dubs and Cocoon Recordings. They naturally hit the ground running with "Pink Panzer", a bustling affair that mixes live drum breakbeats and tough machine percussion with moody, booming bass, creepy strings and evocative, ever-building tech-house electronics. Flipside "Argonaut" is an altogether sleazier and heavier affair full of thrusting, non-stop distorted bass, redlined post-electro drums and all manner of mind-mangling electronic effects. It's effectively the Yang to the A-side's Ying and, like its' predecessor, very good indeed.

Review: Juliche Hernandez is the young Canarian owner of Downhill Music, with releases on ViVA Music, PIV, Decay and MadTech. His very deep and dark style of sound is right at home on Brooklyn Bridge Music Company, who present his 'Tormento Bridge' EP of last year which has been recently repressed due to high demand. Tough rolling and dubby tech house for the main room can be heard on the title track, while the bouncy funk of "Como Los Triuleros" calls to mind the sounds of iO Mulen or Djebali. On the flip, you have the mental groove of "Old Birds" and its sexy vocal which is perfect mood music for Sunday morning boat parties.

Review: Previously, London label Butter Side Up was probably best-known for offering up some quietly impressive EPs from rising stars Sweely and Christian Jay. This EP, which comes from high-profile Los Angeles-based techno producer Urulu (real name Taylor Freels) under his alternative Liquid Earth guise, is undoubtedly the fledgling imprint's biggest release to date. Across the four tracks, Freels explores the more psychedelic side of the Californian house and techno sound, variously doffing a cap to colourful 90s techno/dub house fusion (on the chunky and ear-catching "Transcedenton"), the Orbital end of the breakbeat hardcore spectrum ("Senator Bomgwater's Revenge", which sounds like it could have featured on the Hartnoll brothers' "Brown Album"), San Diego style tech-house (the Hipp-E and Halo-ish "Twisted Metal") and dreamy breakbeat techno (lovely closing cut "Neutral Circuits").

Review: A 20th anniversary reissue of Sasu Ripatti's classic from the turn of the millennium. 'Vocalcity' is a milestone release which is unlike his more experimental works as Vladislav Delay, saw Ripatti capture the innovation of the 'micro' sound of the time (popularised by the likes of issuing label Force Tracks and scape) while incorporating elements of dub techno and deep house - with evocative female vocals a constant throughout. From the groovy glitch-funk of "Synkro" to the sexy sophistication of underground classic "Tessio'' or the smooth and sensual slow-burner "She-Center" - it hasn't aged one bit! Hailed by many critics as one of the most seminal and important releases to have come out of the '00s, this is a welcome and much needed repress of a right classic, courtesy of Ripatti's eponymous imprint that has been faithfully remastered.

Review: UK label AER returns with a 3 track EP. Back on the controls is British label boss Miles at the helm, giving us a journey of varying textures. After releases on Aesthetic Audio, ART, Ornate amongst others, Miles esteemed reputation for discerning House & Techno both as a DJ & producer ensure this release is another pure piece of artistry. Not one to compromise, Miles delivers yet again. 'Obliquity' is a dub techno slice of hypnosis! Emancipate gives us a beautiful string rendition amongst haunting lead lines, while 'Whispers' goes beyond the deep, down into ethereal emotive territory, giving the full release a nice snapshot spectrum of this mans work. Review: Italian duo Rufus and Mass_prod are back once again as Nightdrivers, shoring up to Holic Trax with more of their infectious club-ready material. Beyond the functionality of their drums, where the Nightdrivers excel is in their choice of samples and textures to add a psychoactive twist to their craft. "A Funny Thang" is a delightfully unhinged workout, while "Stressedout" does a fine job of digging into a heads down, RnB inflected groove. "Rising" switches things up with a broken beat groove that loads up sunkissed soul samples to great effect, and then the record rounds out with a dub mix of "A Funny Thang".

  3. The Magic Flute
Review: Following on from his 2010 "Dickens Tracks" EP
for London's PAL SL, OCH drops the eagerly awaited 2nd edition to the
series. As a producer his sound stands out through fusing stripped-back,
jackin' drums with sharp, swinging hats always adding an injection of
analog warmth through sparse, synth arrangements. A1's "Cross Check"
stays true to the labels early roots by using the bare essentials of
house music to create a hypnotic, highly effective floor-mover. On the
flip, "Star Of Hope" is an interlude, set-starter or vinyl DJ tool. B2's
"The Magic Flute" has a relaxed, sunny Chicago feeling teasing with
lush samples, driving bass and rock-solid beats. Mastered at D&M.

Cause For Concern EP
Cat: AL 014. Rel: 08 Dec 14
  1. Tones & Textures
  2. Sacred Ground
  3. Divider
Review: Jordan Peak makes a stellar return to the Air London imprint this September with the 'Cause For Concern' EP, a three-track collection from the London based producer.
The ever on-point Jordan Peak has been continually delivering striking and versatile material over the past four years, releasing records via some leading labels in underground house and techno, such as Tsuba, Robsoul, Bass Culture and One Records. Here we see Jordan return to the Air London label, following his 'It's Time / Hanging By A Thread' EP on the imprint last year.
Peak kicks off the 'Cause For Concern' EP with 'Tones & Textures', a rugged groove-led workout fuelled by a bumpy, penetrating rhythm. The synthesized elements then add a warm and charming character to the composition, meandering around the percussive foundation; Peak employs ethereal pads, swirling dub echoes and resonant stabs here to create a mesmerizing and hypnotic vibe.
Following is 'Sacred Ground' which picks up the pace slightly with insistent sub tones, naturally swung organic percussion, ever evolving, tension building atmospherics and a trippy spoken-word vocal line uttering the track's title sporadically. Once again resulting in a classy, understated piece of work from this clear-cut talent.
The package is then closed with 'Divider', a brilliant construction to finish the package which sees Jordan opt for a more minimalistic approach, stripping back the drums to a sparse yet punchy vibe, while rounded low-end tones drive things along, and bubbling bell sounds, gritty stabs and aggressive bass hits are thrown into the mix intermittently.

The Girls Thing
Cat: PERLON 118. Rel: 24 Oct 18
  1. Sea Of Hands (6:34)
  2. Outro (3:07)
  3. The Girls Thing (8:29)
Review: Over the course of his 15-year career, Bruno Pronsato has proved adept at combining otherworldly, minimalist rhythms with looser, more organic musical elements. He's at it again here on this Perlon outing, proving that sparse minimal techno can still feel warm and human. This is particularly evident on opener "Sea of Hands", where Pronsato's evocative, soft-touch vocal rise above chiming synthesizer notes and an off-kilter, snare-heavy beat. There's an even more organic feel to "Outro", where warm bass guitar notes and synthesized steel drum sounds come accompanied by little more than claps and cymbals. The most dancefloor-focused cut of the lot is B-side "The Girls Thing", a typically deep, sparse and bass-heavy minimal techno roller blessed with intricate percussion programming and Villalobos levels of wonkiness.

The Einhorn EP
  1. Einhorn
  2. Ability To Change Your Mind
Review: "The Einhorn EP" with Dario Zenker marks the come back of Bruno Pronsato on Telegraph. The release includes 2 marathon tracks between live and production. After living in Wasserburg, Dario Zenker comes back to Munich. He began his DJ career at the Ultraschall club alongside the likes of Acid Mario or Vitalic vs The Hacker & Hometrainer. 2006 is the year of his first productions on Balcon, Num and Telegraph. Bruno Pronsato (aka Steven Ford) has been subverting expectations within techno's upper echelons since 2003 but the Seattle producer took a circuitous path to reach his current lofty status. After his acclaimed releases on Orac, Musique Risquée, Milnormodern and Telegraph, 2006 would be the year of his consecration!

Review: Having issued the excellent Momento Drive mix CD by Comeme maverick Rebolledo earlier this month, Kompakt present this addendum 12" sampler featuring three considered highlights of fifteen track set for the vinyl selectors out there. The mix CD itself was a fairly accurate representation of what you'd expect to hear in a Rebolledo DJ set, and it's great to see an 'extended raw version' of the man's own axe heavy "Windsurf, Sunburn & Dollar" lining the A Side, Vic Reeves pub singer style vocals and all! Rebolledo has a hand in the B Side cuts too, offering up a trademark Hippie Dance take on Slove as part of Pachanga Boys with Superpitcher and turning in a devilish solo remix of "Camino De Dreyfus" by I'm A Cliche dons Red Axes.

Fresh off a new Fumiya Tanaka LP and that superb Margaret Dygas 12", Perlon are operating on all cylinders at the moment and this debut Spacetravel LP is a fine addition to the label canon. Some eight tracks deep, the cannily-titled Dancing Therapy already sounds like a future Perlon classic, breezing from hypnotic reduced house ("Kill Divas") to haywire techno deviations via stripped down minimal DJ tools. Dancing therapy indeed!

Review: Following choice wares from tape_hiss and Pascal Viscardi, Love Notes stride into winter with a fulsome offering from lesser-known artist Subtenant, who packs just the right balance of classic acid and modernist techno into the three original tracks on this 12". "Evergreen Soul" looks set to turn heads in the club with its playful organ flex hopping around the punchy 303 notes, while "Artisanal Acid" brings some homespun hardware handiwork to the table. "Know How It Feels" drops in at a slower tempo, but it's D'Marc Cantu who steals the show with a dynamic remix of the title track loaded with detail and shot through with dub.

Question Mark (remixes) (12" Nachpressung)
Cat: KOMPAKT 251. Rel: 30 Jul 20
  1. Question Mark (KiNK mix feat Rachel Row) (8:25)
  2. Question Mark (Adam Port mix) (6:51)
Review: Earlier this year, Berlin duo Terranova returned with their first tangible output for some five years, delivering their fifth studio LP Hotel D'Amour on the evergreen Kompakt imprint. The Cologne label extends the Terranova listening party, electing to see how the album's opening track "Question Mark" can be manipulated by fresh minds. Much like Terranova have been out of the spotlight for a while, Bulgarian 303 botherer KiNK has been a bit quiet of late, so the sight of him adorning the A Side with a typically ripe revision of the track featuring Thomas Haffding is a welcome one! It's a remix worthy of KiNK's reputation too, deftly incorporating the tinkling melodic elements as well as Haffding's delicate voice amidst a tough, undulating ride through rollercoaster percussion and thick waves of bass. German producer Adam Port - known for a killer edit of The Weeknd - provides an equally fine remix on the flip, opting for a tougher groove that can only be described as relentless in its energy.

Phase 3 (12")
Cat: FER 301. Rel: 27 Jan 14

Review: REPRESS ALERT: This return of Ferox records sees an enthusiastic response from all. The label has forthcoming releases from many original Ferox artists and some new recruits and collaborations along the way. This, the first release in 5 years, sees label head-honcho Russ Gabriel in action under his Too Funk guise. From the first 'Return Of Too Funk EP' to the later 'Hotel Ibis' and Derrick Carter's remix of 'Venus Fly Trap', Russ's Too Funk grooves have been jacking dance floors on both sides of the Atlantic since 1995. This latest offering, 'Phase 3', is a 45 rpm two tracker of House goodness only available on vinyl. No clear favourite has emerged from the two sides, among the selective few that have heard it. Like much of the wealthy Ferox catalogue before it, this is proper House Music with an electric twinge.

Review: In the early-to-mid 2000s, when nu-jazz was at its' peak, Compost Records' annual Future Sounds of Jazz compilation was always essential listening. This surprise 13th edition appears five years after its' predecessor, re-introducing the series to a whole new generation of listeners. Happily, its' every bit as essential as the series' earliest installments, and draws together all manner of jazz-leaning productions. You'll hear a string-drenched broken house gem from Falty DL, some Afro tech-jazz from Mr Raoul K, a supremely Balearic rework ofMatanza's "Existencia" from Acid Pauli, an epic electro-jazz throw down from Butch & C Voigt, and an essential remix of Tony Allen by Ricardo Villalobos and Max Loderbauer. Throw in fine contributions from Peter Kruder, Axel Boman and Chaos In The CBD, and you've got an essential collection.

Review: Next summer, Cocoon will notch up their 20th straight season hosting parties on the White Isle. Before then, boss man Sven Vath has offered up this two-disc journey through the records that defined his residency in the summer of 2018. Beginning with the seductive two-step flex of Nightmares on Wax main man DJ EASE's own remix of "Deep Shadows", disc one sees Vath shuffle between glassy-eyed Balearic deep house (Adam Port, Vermont), retro-futurist chuggers (Talaboman) and wonky late night house (Edward, Red Axes). Disc two, meanwhile, is an altogether heavier and more muscular affair, with the legendary German DJ gleefully charging between mind-altering techno, tech-house and big room anthems from the likes of Butch, Anna, Robag Wruhme, Radio Slave and Fabrice Lig.

Review: Not content with a release schedule that delivers a new compilation every other day, Cocoon have decided to launch a new mix strand: Cocoon Heroes. This first installment features discs mixed by Joris Voorn and Cassy. On the first, Voorn smoothly joins the dots between heady deep house, touchy-feely tech-house and melody-driven hypnotic moods, cramming in 26 tracks from the likes of Lawrence, Guy Gerber and Oxia. Cassy takes things a little easier on disc two, choosing to give 13 tracks the chance to breathe. It's arguably a more interesting mix, too, going from the off-kilter bass music of Pearson Sound to the woozy techno of Mr G via a series of impeccably percussive grooves.
