Review: SOLO 500 is back on their own self-titled label with the third entry in Galaxy Sound Company's series and again it digs deep into jazz-funk to turn out some killer breaks. Up first is the main theme from 1974's subway hijack movie The Taking Of The Pelham One Two Three and it is one with a funky, jazzy, high-octane sound that has been sampled by Company Flow, Mix Master Mike and many more. On the backside is an edit of a tune from Manfred Mann Chapter Three's self-titled 1969 LP. This one has been famously sampled by The Prodigy. Another great little 7".

Review: Producer Soul Supreme is back with another 7" record, delivering two new phat'uns to that subsection of fans who prefer things on the wonkier side. Following earlier, acclaimed tributes the likes of A Tribe Called Quest, J Dilla and Mos Def, the new 'Dues and Don'ts' b/w 'Fraud Fades' 45 features two, all-original jazz-funk groovers by the Amsterdam-based keyboardist and producer. The former track burns slowly, carefully building up around a harpsichord improv, Herbie Hancock style, coming heavy-set by a thick and booming drum backing that soon enough late-blossoms into a cinematic, stringed soaring-on-high. The latter track pays complementary homage to the funk drum breaks of yore, with the central drum line around which the track is built echoing Serge Gainsbourg or Clyde Stubblefield, albeit making conspicuous its own electronically sequenced, not entirely live-performed, feel.

He kicks off with 'Scapegoat' featuring the alluring vocals of Milly James which echo out over super slow-motion dub rhythms and icy pads. The Pole rework brings more crisp hits and distant eerie drones over a more pronounced rhythm but one that remains devilishly sparse. On the flip, 'Deceivers' has more hypotonic drive - a fleshy dub stepper to lock in any 'floor and then 'Believers' slows it down to a crawl once more. An essential dub EP that promises no represses.

Review: The Soul Surfers & Shawn Lee have linked their creative energies once more with a new pair of singles for the cultured Spasibo Records. Both tracks on this limited gold vinyl were recorded in 2018. One was captured at Moscow's Magnetone studio during Lee's visit for the premiere of a movie documenting his prior recording with The Soul Surfers, and the other was recorded remotely with The Soul Surfers at their Nizhniy Novgorod headquarters and Lee at his London studio, The Shop. The collaboration is a fruitful one with two sublime and timeless funk cuts featuring some bittersweet replaying of classic melodies.

Review: Skee Mask's run on Ilian Tape shows no sign of slowing down as his Skee Series clocks up volume seven. As always the sheer weight of ideas spilling out of his studio is remarkable, veering from the gorgeous aqueous tones of 'Daytime Gamer (version)' to the barely there drones of 'MDP93'. Using library music as their source, they bring their own psychedelic twist with deeply funky grooves and have done now for over a decade. Review: Dynamite Cuts brings the heat once more with a second volume of their Sound Music 45s series. Siegfried Schwab takes care of the A-side with 'Getting High', a scorching funk workout with hard-worked guitar chords and precise percussion over lots of wah-wah effects. 'Feel It; flip the script with a superbly stripped-down jazz-funk lounge sound. Klaus Weiss then steps up on 'Time For Rhythm' with some loose, percussive funk beats that are raw and organic, then Peter Thomas closes down with 'Documentation', a more richly instrumental and multi-layered jazz-funk sound that conveys real grandeur.

Review: Sindh combines old and new worlds on his latest mystic hymns, this time kicking off the A-Biotic label with his dark and alluring four-track EP 'Andaman'. He manages to fuse organic and synthetic materials here as he heads down a darkly introspective path where minimal and IDM, dub and techno all collide in mutant form. 'Jangil' is a real standout with its bubbling halftime rhythms and icy synths backed by distant angelic chorals. The bewitching sounds continue on 'Galathea' which rides back and forth on its heels as subtle sines, scurrying synths and menacing pads all interlock before 'Hinam' locks you in a dense synth stasis and loopy sense of lurching rhythm.

Review: The Soul Surfers share their debut 7" on Broc Recordz, following a promising entree working with various raw funk and soul greats, including with Jack Nilovic on his 'Maze of Sounds' compilation, not to mention appearing on the first volume of the recent Two Tales For The Mind V/A. 'High Roller' and its counterpart 'Big Slick' are two large, roomy, instrumental sonic gateau slices, on which an outsized four-string occupies the front and centre of both mixes, to megalomaniac, almost gluttonous effect. All else follows naturally; plucks, snares and FX licks resound, as we're left to contemplate the ingenious front cover by Italian artist Riccardo Bettazzoni.

Review: After launching last year via an arguably overlooked EP from Obsidian, Parallel Connection has made us wait a little while for the London label's second release. It comes courtesy of Sela, a 25-year-old French producer who apparently honed his soon to be trademark sound while living in the UK. There's much to enjoy across the four track missive, from the alien electronics, loose-limbed broken electro beats and chiming lead lines of '2020 Connection' and sub-heavy, acid-flecked stomp of 'Animal Kingdom', to the pitched-down electronica eccentricity of 'Really Get Fucked' and the psychedelic late-night tech-house hedonism of 'Mr Rabbit', which boasts bleeping melodies reminiscent of both mod-90s ambient techno and Yorkshire bleep and bass.

Review: It's no wonder Idee Fixe references Synth Britannia in the notes for this debut album from Sauna. Nodding to a BBC documentary that charts the genesis, and subsequent chart rise of synth pop across the UK, while in many ways what's here feels far removed from the retro-futurism of The Human League and peers, there's a DIY atmosphere that more than bridges the gap. Natural talent making raw ideas sound machine tight.
'Carousel' is the perfect example. Opiate lyrical delivery and loose, low-slung rhythm bely the taught framework holding everything together. 'Over' matches for sharpness, taking the tempo down a notch and upping the glittering effects that make this entire record a kind of rhythm & blues-electronic hybrid, only getting deeper and more engrossing on 'Levitate' and 'Folded Hands', like a much more accessible, poppier offspring of Silver Apples.

Review: After making an impressive turn on Wisdom Teeth last year, Okand Konstnar returns to Kimochi Sound with a new grip of bubbling, left-of-centre techno grooves for those who like things supremely dubby and dipped in stardust. There are discernible grooves coursing throughout this latest Shielding record, but the beats play second fiddle to nimble melodic lines and atmospheric ripples. Even on 'Indoors', the more kinetic thrum of the beat feels closer to a tonal synth part than a beat. 'Vinter' meanwhile invites us into a beatless realm where the synthetic organisms in Shielding's biome have the run of the place. It's deep, immersive techno existing on the fringes, where the most interesting things tend to happen.

Review: Music From Memory are spending some time exploring the world of music created for dance and performance. There's a common interest in experimentation between the mediums, but not at the cost of musicality, which comes here with a distinct 80s veneer. Gerard Stokkink has a thread of drama and poise about the vivid synthscapes of "Yellow Turtles" while the self-titled track from Ivory Playground calls to mind the delicate fingerpicking guitar you might expect to hear from Alexis Georgopoulos & Jefre Cantu-Ledesma. Atlantis Transit Project have a heavier tribal lilt to the percussion on "Bird Perspective", and Ramuntcho Matta's "Zoique III" holds a mirror up to the freaky disco drum work of Jan Schulte and Niklas Wandt.

Review: Once again, Music From Memory has dug deep for inspiration. Very few will have come across the original 1987 pressing of Ich Traume So Leise, a long-forgotten collaborative album that brought together trumpet player Heinz Becker, songwriter Karl-Heinz Stegmann, and poet Isabel Zeumer. Predictably, though, the tracks which the Dutch label has chosen to reissue are exceptionally good. "Mein Tanzlied", for example, features Becker's meandering trumpet lines and Zeumer's eyebrow-raising spoken word vocals seemingly drifting over an intoxicatingly funky, mid-80s dancefloor groove, while "Dir" is a seriously atmospheric chunk of beatless jazz poetry. Flip for the Balearic electro-funk of "Der Schnupfen" and the languid, new age ambience of "Abends".

Review: Zodiak Commune reaches right back into the early days of the Dutch acid techno and electro scene, and it remains an essential outlet for tough and gnarly rave gear for darkened souls. This new record is a split between Umwelt and Serge Geyzel, continuing a series of split discs pitting serious underground operators against each other. Umwelt's side kicks off with the blistering acid electro of 'The Wake Of The Anthropocene' and follows up with heavy but melodic pearler 'Cosmic Dancer'. Geyzel's 'Off The Ground' is a nervy slice of acid with sad-hearted undertones, and 'Hostage' completes the set with a moody, percussive throwdown.

It features Italian artists Santucci and Castiglione taking one side each with their own lush jazz and library tinged instrumentals. Review: The truly special thing about a track like 'Tainted Love' is its malleability over time. The original elements touch on New Romanticism, New Wave, electro, and synth pop, creating a twisted and mutated version of the crooning troubadour that smacks of sticky dancefloor heat in subterranean haunts.
With that in mind a remix collection could pretty much go anywhere, and in many ways this one does. Presenting several interpretations of this timeless and iconic tune, these range from the not-so-different instrumental and the strikingly powerful but simple acapella, through to DJ Hell's typically growly stomper, and the groovier, wavier Jack Ford and Jaimieson Hill cut. Review: The high class Melodies International reissue label co-run by Floating Points and Elliot Bernard is back with the seance in its Melodies Record Club series. This time it is blistering club DJ Ben UFO who gets his pick after Four Tet had his go earlier in the year. The two tunes he pick have long been staples in his set either though on the surface of it neither are typical club tunes. They have never before been available on vinyl for that reason but we're glad they are now. 'Drums' is off Laurie Spiegel's 1980 experimental album The Expanding Universe and is all oscillating synths and computer generated percussion while Olof Dreijer from the Swedish band the Knife offers 'Echoes From Mamori' on the flip, a more tropical and whimsical cut of new age licked house made from arpeggios and frog samples.

Review: American label Peoples Potential Unlimited has cared out its own superb niche in the world of heart aching, lo-fi funk. But here a new catalogue number seems to suggest a new series. It kicks off with French collective Spaced Out Krew and their timeless, boogie driven disco funk. The music was written during 2020 by Spleen3000 and Marius Cyrilou of Ceeofunk and right from the first note of 'Doudou Bourbon' it is pure class. There are starry-eyed melodies, rasping basslines and curious vocals that all add up to a nice cosmic disco sound.

Review: After the inaugural EP from Berlin-based collective Melantonia by the label's co-founders founders Hanna Maria and Mattia Onori, together with Feral and Plants Army Revolver, they're back with the first episode of a VA series "exploring uncharted sonic realms". The results check in somewhere between techno and ambient, harnessing the best of both. So Andrea Cossu's 'Ossia' pulsates with a Geiger Counter beat reminiscent of early Panasonic/Pansonic, Simone Bauer's 'Halo' is like Plaid doing dub and Camilla Pisani's 'Schenk Mir Deine Trane' uses field recordings and the distant strain of melancholic melody, all three, like everyone here, creating something fresh and previously unheard.
