Minimal/Tech House
  1. Triathlon (10:09)
  2. Cuttin Ice (8:11)
  3. Cox Terrier (7:34)
Review: Romanian legend Dan Andrei teams up with Serban Goanta (the co-owner of Understand) as AK41 and they inaugurate new imprint Zimbru for some highgrade reductionist grooves here. "Triathlon" is the kind of quirky minimal funk that guys like Isolee and Losoul used to put out back in the day. "Cuttin' Ice" is deep, dubby and bumpy like early Perlon while "Cox Terrier" is probably the most abstract offering with the mandatory rolling bass and jagged rhythmicity balanced by some paranoid soundscapes for maximum effect at the afterhours.

Cielo EP (180 gram 12" limited to 300 copies)
Cat: ZIMBRV 04. Rel: 14 Oct 19
Minimal/Tech House
  1. El Senor De Los Cielos (15:09)
  2. Fresno (6:35)
  3. Cablung (7:44)
Review: Sahau is a quintet comprised of Bucharest scene hero Dan Andrei, with locals Paul Agripa (Ragrip) and Serban Goanta under their AK41 moniker - all highly respected DJs and producers within the Rominimal scene. The third collaborative effort on their Zimbru imprint and following up 2017's "As It Wasn't There EP", "Cielo EP" is awashed with mesmerising vibes from start to finish. The off-kilter broken beat hypnotism of opener "El Senor De Los Cielos" is as esoteric as you like over its meandering 15 minute duration, while B side "Fresno" is a deeper and groovier minimal funk effort which is perfect for getting weird at the afterhours. Closing cut "Cablung" is an introverted and bass-driven affair that takes a much darker and experimental turn but equally suited for one of those sleep deprived Sunday afternoon shenanigans.

Montreal EP (heavyweight vinyl 12")
Cat: ZMBR 001. Rel: 23 Oct 15
Minimal/Tech House
  1. NJ Breaks (9:49)
  2. Montreal (9:06)
Review: Sahau inaugurates new Romanian imprint Zimbru with, you guessed it; some sublime and hypnotic minimalism. "NJ Breaks" is dreamy deep house with said break riding on top of a rolling groove and tripped out pads for afterhour delights. On the flip is "Montreal" , indebted to early noughties minimal of such imprints as Perlon or m_nus with its high pitched tom drums and high hat shuffle working alongside stuttering, glitchy melodies.

As It Wasn't There EP (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: ZMBR 003. Rel: 15 Nov 17
Minimal/Tech House
  1. Sahau - "As It Was" (15:57)
  2. AK41 - "The Man Who Wasn't There" (12:25)
Review: Romanian imprint Zimbru could hardly be described as prolific. In fact, this 12" is the label's third outing in three years. Fittingly, it features a track each from the two artists who graced their first two EPs. Sahau handles the A-side, laying down an undeniably epic, late night excursion that sits somewhere between the distinctive minimal techno swing of Ricardo Villalobos and spacey, ultra-deep house. Like the best Villalobos productions, it subtly ebbs and flows for 16 mesmerizing minutes. Over on the flipside Dan Andrei and Seban Goanta once again join forces as AK41, celebrating "The Man Who Wasn't There" via twittering birdsong, deep and rolling bass, ricocheting electronic riffs and impressively programmed percussion.
