  2. I Was Born This Way (Shep Pettibone Better Days mix) (8:17)
  3. I Was Born This Way (Shep Pettibone club mix) (10:38)
  4. I Was Born This Way (Larry Levan live edit) (4:28)
Review: An iconic Better Days favourite and groundbreaking disco hymn; Carl Bean's cult gay anthem enjoys a timely reissue with all its famous edits on one hefty 12". Tom Moulton, Larry Levan and two classic rebuilds from the one and only Shep Pettibone. Each mix highlighting a different aspect of both the original and the remixing artist, we're given the full sonic spread: Moulton captures the naked essence of disco, Levan brings the vocal right to the very fore while Pettibone went cosmic years ahead of his time on both extended, subtly dubbed mixes.

  2. You Can't Have Your Cake & Eat It Too (instrumental Cake mix) (6:53)
  3. You Can't Have Your Cake & Eat It Too (6:25)
Review: West End's occasional reissue series continues with a timely repress of one of the renowned New York label's standout cuts from the boogie era, Brenda Taylor's dancefloor anthem "You Can't Have Your Cake & Eat It Too". With its strong vocal, killer synth bassline, honky-tonk piano solos and delay-laden drum hits, the original vocal version should be familiar to anyone with a love for early '80s NYC club culture. On this press, the definitive vocal version by David Todd and Nick Martinelli is also joined by their brilliant "Instrumental Cake Mix" - where the dubbiness of the original production can be heard far more clearly - and a slightly different, less celebrated early vocal mix.

  2. Forrrce - "Keep On Dubbin'" (Greg Wilson edit) (5:17)
  3. Raw Silk - "Do It To The Music" (Greg Wilson edit) (6:37)
  4. Shirley Lites - "Heat You Up" (Melt Down mix - Greg Wilson edit) (7:19)
Review: West End's double-pack re-edit series continues, with long-standing UK electrofunk hero and scalpel rework specialist Greg Wilson sharing a quartet of revisions. There are airings for two of Wilson's most sought-after scalpel works from the "Credit To The Edit" series - superb versions of Brenda Taylor's "You Can't Have Your Cake and Eat It Too" and Raw Silk's "Do It To The Music" - as well as a couple of previously heard rearrangements that are on-point as per usual. Wilson first adds even more mind-altering delays and low-slung dub disco flavour to Forrrce's "Keep On Dubbin'", before superbly stretching out the mostly instrumental "Melt Down Mix" of Shirley Lites' synth-laden peak-time classic "Heat You Up".

  4. Fly Away (West End Lounge mix) (4:24)
Review: Second time around for Detroit deep house outfit The Kings of Late Night's 2005 Fly Away EP, which originally appeared on the West End Blue imprint. With Billy Love's sumptuous vocals to the fore, there's much to enjoy throughout - not least the organic, undulating, live deep house warmth of sublime opener "It's The Life". Theo Parrish's Sound Signature Remix of "Illumination" - ultra-deep, jazzy, spaced-out and hypnotic - remains one of the Detroit producer's greatest reworks. On the flip, beatdown pioneer Norm Talley takes on remix duties to deliver two contrasting versions of "Fly Away". There's the sparse, jazzy and intricately programmed West End Blue Mix, and the slightly smoother West End Lounge Mix, where Love's immaculate vocals take centre stage.

Review: This really doesn't need any introduction does it? Arthur Russell's infamous and seminal Loose Joints compilation originally compiled back in 2013 gets a vinyl re-issue by West End on Record Store Day 2016. Yes, his undisputed disco anthem of ever "Is It All Over My Face (original 12" version)" indeed appears, not to mention the unreleased original female vocal version plus the full length and Larry Levan versions. If that was not enough, we've got three versions of "Pop Your Funk" and another three of "Tell You Today". Get your hands on a copy of this before it's too late!

Review: Arthur Russell and Steve D'Aquisto's legendary 1980 club anthem has always been shrouded with stories when it comes to unreleased and alternative cuts. And West End have just added a whole load of fuel to the hype fire. Two versions and brand new edit: taking Arthur's original genuinely loose instrumentation and raw funk (as opposed to Levan's more famous stripped back club-ready takes that took the centre stage), both the female and male versions are here in all their extended, unreleased glory. For added measure, edit king Kon has crafted a duet cut that fuses both versions into one gloriously slack, free-flowing groove. We're all over this record.

Review: In cahoots with the annual (not to mention excellent) Liverpool Disco Festival, celebrated editor and remixer Rahaan has been let loose on the West End Records catalogue. Happily, his new versions are rightfully respectful to the chosen disco and boogie classics with the Chicagoan simply adding choice effects here and there as well as some cranky old drum machine beats and occasional synthesizer flourishes. This is particularly evident on his raw but deep and slightly dubby take on Brenda Taylor's "You Can Have You Cake It Too", but also comes to the fore on the standout remix of Mahogany's spacey boogie jam "Ride on The Rhythm". String-laden disco bliss is provided via a bass-heavy re-arrangement of the Chuck Davis Orchestra's "Spirit of Sunshine", while Rahaan's Billy Nicholls rub is a high-octane, shirts-off treat.
