Review: First emerging on the excellent Signals label last year, the clandestine Black Narcissus project from Rephlex artist Jodey Kendrick has gone on to find a welcome home in Fred De Chez's WeMe Records. Black Narcissus is a relatively late addition to WeMe, with the Belgian label celebrating its tenth anniversary this year, though it's been a wholly logical one with the cinematic influenced electro project stylistically aligned with the label's roster which includes Der Zyklus, DJ Stingray and Global Goon. Some six months after the debut Black Narcissus LP on WeMe, Kendrick returns with a second album entitled Fatale, with ten tracks of thunderous electro that are notable for their indecipherable titles.

Review: Black Narcissus originally debuted on the Signals label last year with the excellent Black Narcissus X mini album, and whilst the identity of the producer was kept a secret beyond the suggestion that it was the work of a sometime Rephlex artist, it has subsequently been revealed to be the work of Jodey Kendrick, whose electro-focused music has appeared under various guises on the label founded by Richard D. James, and on the affiliated Electric Dance Music. Varla is Kendrick's debut album under the Black Narcissus guise and as the artwork suggests it takes its name from the lead character of Russ Meyer's '60s exploitation flick Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!, and musically it's as frantic and occasionally as brutal as the music of electro deities Drexciya.

Review: Just over a year after the second part in his Colundi Interception series, Capsule Network is back with a third volume. This is a series defined by techno that takes you into outer space. Opener 'Otava' is with laced with ambient pads but also driving and hard edge, then 'Merak' sinks down into a smooth, rolling dub techno groove that is all about your head. 'Alioth' is a suspensory ambient interlude that gets you on edge and then it's back to silky rhythms and sleek synth design on the acid laced pumper 'Dubhe.' The drums break free on the more loose and unhinge closer 'Megrez.'

Review: WeMe Records proudly present Cro Magnox, a killer new LP from the long standing Pope of Acid House Andy Jenkinson. The Belgian label has always had a soft spot for Jenkinson's output regardless of his chosen moniker. Spread over three slabs of wax, this fifteen track selection is a perfect representation of Ceephax's mindstate in the crawl space between Giorgio Moroder and Daphne Oram expressed through his widely regarded mastery of analogue machinery. The opening flourishes of "National Grid" more than justify such a description, whilst the subsequent fourteen tracks veer brilliantly through labyrinthine movements of swooping synthscapes, rippling 808 electro, reverberant experimentalism

Review: Serial TB-303 abuser Andy Jenkinson once again dons the now familiar Ceephax Acid Crew alias for the first of what we're promised will be a trilogy of "Acid Cask" EPs. If that is the case, then we're in for a treat, because "Acid Cask 1: Pandemonium" more than lives up to its title. Check, for example, the full-throttle acid techno insanity of opener "Acid Consortium", the ragged psychedelic TB-303 motifs and mind-altering aural textures of "Acid Fiefdom" and the sweaty assault on the senses that is "Slimepit", where creepy chords, mangled acid lines and foreboding electronics rise above a thunderous, redlined techno groove.

Review: First released in 2006, 'Ceerial Port' is the ultimate wildcard in the electro profligate Ceephax's towering discography. The seven-or-eight track album does things with the electro form that few of Mr. Jenkinson's contemporaries would dare ever indulge, were it not for this initial fatherly stamp of approval. lead reissue cut 'Acid Whorl' is the foremost case in point, hard-limiting and soft-clipping a cyclonic 'whorlwind' of pitch-whacked acid effluence. Further 8-bit playtimes come in the form of 'Acid Highway' and 'Acid Causeway', recalling the feeling of scouring the outer edges of an Atari Kart game and encountering nothing but rolling, pixelated skies; 'Tough Grugoy Acid' and 'Woodlice Acid' make up the longer wavelengths on the spectrum, stomping and echo-rimshotting to ever-weighty, yet jolly ends.

Review: Chromedealer's Sketches Of Silver EP is a collection of cuts that were originally recorded between 2021 and 2023 and now arrive on Belgium staple WeMe. They find the New York-based producer in scintillating form with opener ' Onyourmarks' fusing jungle and electro with masterful synth work to make for a thrillingly high-paced yet emotive rhythm from another world. 'Sable' is another track made from millions of seemingly small fragments of sound that all coalesce into a darker broken jungle soundscape then 'Jack' pairs lovely snappy snares and rolling amen breaks with celestial melodic sequences that drift up top. 'Cubed3' is more masterfully nimble drum programming and 'Silver City' brings a more melancholic mood to close.

Review: Norway's Stian Gjevik has been a consistent player in Belgium's WeMe Records, and it has to be said that he is one of the only Scandinavian artists who is still making electro like it bloody well should be. The Derelict is his second album for the imprint, and its ten glorious slices of mind funk are a journey right from the start of "Resuscitation", to "Homesick". Imagine being stranded on a distant planet where physics are only a distant memory, and sounds have taken the place of voices; it's a realm of electronic dreams, all powered with grizzly 606 percussion and gorgeous, liquid-like synths that form and melt continuously. This is the natural development of greats such as Drexciya, and it is not an album to be underestimated. For fans of DJ Stingray's previous output on the label.

Review: Gerald Donald is back under the Der Zyklus alias for more futurist darkside electro experiments: his signature sound. Where the project's sound may have been more varied on previous releases, the Renormalon LP goes more for the downbeat and sometimes completely beatless and it's really quite brilliant because of it. We really liked the intergalactic ambience of "Interference Pattern" (which would have sounded great on the Event Horizon soundtrack), the dramatic and isolated arpeggiation of "Photopolymer" (beautifully haunting!) and the evil wall of sound delay of of "Optical Distortion" which reaches near psychedelic moments and capturing that ghost in the machine like only Donald can.

Review: Arguably one of the few artists out there actively heading further into the abyss that Drexciya were staring into, Stingray delivers his second album for Belgian label WeMe and yet again twists the normal perception of electro on its head. Gone are the standard tempos and basslines that defined the genre, replaced by alien synths, grooves that will resist integration with the rest of the electronic milieu, and a wealth of socially and politically motivated speeches. It's an album of beguiling genius, yet still expressed with the tools that place it in the heart of the Motor City legacy.

Review: "Broken SD1 140": not only a reference to an old drum machine, but also a blatant lie... There is nothing busted about this fresh EP from Breaking Records boss DMX. Here we find him straddling the eons with a timeless blend of rich analogue electronica, classically trained electro and forward-thinking vibage. Highlights include the super-squelch warmth on the bassline of "Apple Grid", the hard-nosed ghetto techmongering of "Superficial Appearance" and the timely vintage house riffery of "Dramatic Exit".

Review: It was 14 years ago that Dopplereffekt's Calabi Yau Space album landed on Rephlex Records, much to the delight of electro fans everywhere. Now it finally gets a much warranted reissue on vinyl thanks to WeMe Records. The album found Dopplereffekt head off into their very own musical realm, far away from here between the stars. The eight tracks are cinematic and spacious in feel but dense in ideas. There is a supernatural feel, a cosmic eeriness that always keeps you guessing as the modulated sounds, whirring machines and alien details all detail haunting leads and implied rhythms.

Review: WeMe's latest compilation is a real treat. It delivers an action-packed trawl through the bulging back catalogue of Ed DMX's Breakin' Records imprint, which is celebrating 25 years in the business in 2022. Since much (though not all) of the label's output has been produced by Ed DMX (under a variety of aliases), it's these that are showcased across the must-check compilation. What you get is body-popping, retro-futurist electro that for the most part sounds like it was recorded in the mid-to-late '80s. Highlights are plentiful throughout, from the Soulsonic Force style brilliance of 'DMX Bass' and 'Computor Rock', to the 8-bit electro-bleep shuffle of 'Be True', the foreboding, electro-rave heaviness of 'Emerging Technology (Remix)', and the roughneck, acid-laden insanity of 'Bongard Problems'.

Review: Stian Gjevik's work as EOD first reached a wider consciousness through Rephlex some 10 years ago, and since then he's trickled out a thread of winsome braindance through his own Bandcamp and on Bjarki's bbbbbb label. Now he shores up on WeMe, a natural home for many previous Rephlex alumni, with an album which should delight lovers of Gjevik's particular approach to electro. As 'Bwarbler2' beautifully demonstrates, his gift lies in teasing the sweetest melodies out of quirky synth tones, embracing subtle wobbles around the edges and managing to strike a sentimental tone without ever getting sappy. The beats still kick it when they want to, but more importantly this is a record full of human warmth, however synthetic the sound.

Across the six glorious sides of wax are three volumes made up of " dreams captured from the two slumbering mainframes of inner earth, TG-77 and D-550." The vibe is otherworldly, with silky techno grooves, futuristic synth work and post-jungle, hyper speed rhythms all providing the carriages on which you travel ever further away from planet earth. It's a wide ranging album that provides a whole wealth of sound for every sort of occasion on the dance floor.

Harrier 2
Spwint (Eeytoeatemix)
Review: Dave Monolith has fast been rising as a prime exponent of the most emotive kind of braindance, and his warm electro sound has found its way on to Rephlex, not to mention birthing the lauded Photodementia series. On this release for Belgian imprint WeMe the tone is similar to his debut LP Welcome, keeping the tempo up and the synth lines loose and limber, with "My Rush Chords" in particular standing out as a shining example of compositionally astounding, playful and exotic drum funk business. "Harrier 2" equally thrills with its use of Detroit strings in the breakdowns and gnarly leads in the drop that wouldn't sound out of place on an Aphex Twin album.

Review: The artist occasionally known as Monolith gets his retro electro groove on for this rather neat little four-tracker. The title track is riddled with melodic emotion, 808 breakbeats and a rather juicy funk lick in the bass department. "Amsterdam" is a slower affair with an almost Mr Fingers style classic flavour to the bass. "Ooh Rahzel" drops the breaks and goes for a solid techy 4/4 culminating in an acid house while the fantastically titled "Hug 2" re-ups the tempo for a psychedelic exploration of breakbeats through the ages. Wonderful stuff.

Review: After impressing with a vibrant debut album on Rephlex back in 2011, David 'Monolith' Barnard seemed to lose his way. Happily, he returned to action at the tail end of last year, and here delivers an expansive, triple-vinyl set for Belgium's admirable WeMe imprint. The simply titled Trax is a typically vibrant affair, with the British producer gleefully hopping between skittish, kaleidoscopic electrofunk, giddy 'braindance' rinse-outs, bleep-influenced jack-tracks, body-poppin' electro, hard-wired acid, and curious, hard-to-pigeonhole IDM. Given that it's 21 tracks deep, it can take a while to get your head round it all, but it's more than worth the effort. Put simply, Trax is one of the most entertaining electronic albums you'll hear all year.

Review: Beyond his prolific body of original work under myriad guises, Gerald Donald has gifted the electro world many a superlative remix. At all times, his pioneering strain of machine funk from the days of Drexciya remains at the forefront of the sound, and so as Belgian label WeMe gather together this compilation of key reworks from the Donaldsphere, it's just as relevant to consider this a compilation of Drexciyan magic you might not have stumbled across before. Whether as Heinrich Mueller, Dopplereffekt or Rudolf Klorzeiger, Donald brings his unique cybernetic qualities to tracks from Ultradyne, Cisco Ferreira and Duplex amongst many others. A particular highlight is the emotive future-synth-pop of his remix of Rough Days For Diamond Trade, while the slow creep of his version of White Car's 'Now We Continue' is equally show-stopping.

Review: The accompanying notes with this say "don't call it a comeback" for NOT_MDK (aka Martin Wood-Mitrovski), even though it is an album that finds him exploring an all-new style. It is a meeting of steady 70/140 bpm grime drums and beats with IDM synth details and evocative breaks that soundtrack an all new type of late night urban conurbation. It's menacing and fresh, perfect for both body and head and is a long way from the jungle this artist made in the late 90s, or the cid and breakbeats he made in the years after that. It's a brilliant reinvention.

Review: In keeping with the spirit of Detroit electro, this long-awaited debut album from the largely mysterious NRSB11 comes with little fanfare, or indeed information of any kind. Given that Drexciya's Gerald Donald is involved (alongside fellow Detroiter DJ Stingray and Spanish techno producer Penelope Martin), this is perhaps unsurprising. As with anything Donald does, Commodified is openly faceless, yet musically emotion-rich. Cold and alien as it is, much of the material here comes laden with emotive melodies, atmospheric chords, or percussive touches that wring the last drops of soul from the machines. Even the bleakest tracks - see "Industrial Espionage" or the decidedly Drexciyan "623-748-3" - have an atmospheric richness often lacking from similar electro exercises.

Review: Having inaugurated NRSB-11 with a self titled 12" on WeMe last year, the pairing of Gerald Donald and DJ Stingray return to the project in more expansive fashion here with Commodified, a full album for the Belgian label. NRSB-11 represents the first time the pair has worked together directly; Although Ingram was commonly billed as "Drexciyan DJ Stingray" in the early stages of his career, he wasn't actively involved in Drexciya beyond his duties as official tour DJ for the iconic subaquatic electro pair of Donald and the late James Stinson. The twelve track album sounds exactly as one might imagine from this pairing, with the subaqueous strains of the sonics augmented by a socio political undertone that goes far beyond the track titles.

Review: Next up on Belgium's WeMe Records is Photodementia, a project started in 1997 by Bernard 'Monolith' Davies, Newcastle native Ellen O'Malley and Frenchman Victor Beaudet. They released two EPs on their eponymous label between 2012 - 2013 which was a sub label of Rephlex. IMG000 features new or unreleased material which will be familiar to fans of their sound: from the locomotive, hypnotic chug of opener 'PD Stomp', the sombre dystopian atmosphere of 'Arrange 7', the upbeat 4/4 computer funk of 'Dwel' to the contemplative and understated late night groove of 'Watch Your Mids' - the influence of Detroit electro is a constant throughout albeit their interesting twist on it. Highly recommended.

Review: Joey Kendrick is perhaps better known for the braindance gear he's put out under his own name for Rephlex and the like, but he's also played around with plenty of aliases over the years too. His work as +10 actually predates his breakthrough years on Rephlex, having been released on the classy Canadian label Napalm Enema. Grace came out in 2007 and it sounds a little rowdier than later Kendrick works, but that's also part of its charm. Hence stalwart Belgian braindance believers WeMe have opted to reissue the CDr-only album as a double vinyl for your twitch, glitchy, acidic pleasure. It's a feast for the cerebellum, no doubt about it.

Review: Belgium's WeMe imprint is rather special indeed. Circulating loosely around an electro framework, the imprint has seen important releases by the likes of DJ Stingray, DMX Krew and many other trendsetters. This time it's label debutants and newcomers Radio Logg who drop a whole album on us, featuring pure electro-funk made for listening or grooving out to. We're not sure who's involved or whether it's an alias for a known producer, but we can safely say that it's a beauty from start to finish. "Stethoscope" is especially wonderful, bringing through that high-tech, sci-fi vibe reminiscent of Drexciya's watery works. With vocals.
