Take Me Higher
Damped
Take Me Higher (Lauer's Al remix)
Take Me Higher (Lauer's Bert remix)
Review: Ludovic Llorca is clearly a man on a mission. Having largely disappeared from view for a couple of years, this is amazingly his third Art of Tones release so far in 2013. Expanding on the approach shown on his Lazy Days and Local Talk releases, this is arguably Llorca's best work yet under the Art of Tones banner. "Take Me Higher" is a soulful, energetic and effortlessly groovy fusion on gospel, classic US deep house and contemporary British bass bottom-end. It's one of those tunes that's nigh on impossible to dislike. "Damped", a foray into fluid, late night deepness, is almost as good. The good news is that there are two Lauer remixes to get stuck into on the flip too, with his deliciously old skool, but lovingly fluid "Bert Remix" being our personal pick.

No Worries (5:40)
Symbiotic (5:25)
Salute To Fela (7:18)
Moments In Blackness (5:28)
Review: Detroit-born Reggie Dokes brings all of his considerable skills to a new EP on the revered We Play House label out of Belgium. It's another timeless deep house exploration with sublime opener 'No Worries' bringing a contemporary r&b/neo-soul vocal that really tug at the heart over heavy drums. 'Symbiotic' again lays down vast kicks at an inviting mid-tempo and overlays them this time with more trippy vocal fragments and smeared chords. 'Salute To Fela' is a fantastic tribute to the Afro beat king with blasts of trumpet and beatdown drums to die for, then 'Moments In Blackness' grinds out some dusty deep house grooves a la Theo Parrish.

Can We Try
Review: Given the runaway success of their 2013 anthem "It's You" (licensed by Defected after vinyl copies began changing hands for huge sums online), hopes are naturally high for this belated follow-up from Red D and San Soda's FCL project. "Can We Try" is nowhere near as potent as its predecessor, but is still a fine effort; certainly, plenty of house DJs will enjoy the bright-eyed combination of bleep-heavy electronics, surging analogue bass and Lady Linn's breathy vocal.

Rude Low
Rude Low (James Teej High Rider remix)
Babylon
Northern Roader
Review: We Play House continue their limited edition coloured vinyl series with three slabs of Humandrome magic spread across two side of very bright yellow vinyl. Mutant house jam "Rude Low" features the kind of wigged out instrumentation that brings to mind DJ Koze at his eccentric best, with a bit of an 'everything but the kitchen sink' approach, but thanks to some deft arrangement the track never gets too cluttered. The keys in particular are hugely pleasing! Sharing the A Side is the James Teej remix of the same track which takes things down the deeper, more stripped back path. Flip over for two more original cuts from the Japanese producer, with the rubber band acid twang of "Babylon" just shading the heads down beats and trancey synths of "Northern Roader".

Our Beat Is Still New: Pre-Take (1/4)
Juju Jordash aka Azab & Crybaby J - "Agent Orange"
Bug Name UK House Guy & Friend aka Anonymous Are DJ Ironfist - "Frog March"
JD Twitch aka TC & The Maxx Paxx - "Just Like That"
Metrobox aka Prins Albert - "Dies Ist Belgien"
Review: The clamour for a full blown New Beat revival that's been brewing via the South London endeavours of World Unknown sees We Play House add some native voice to the campaign with the first in a series of Our Beat Is Still New 12" releases. Over four planned 12"s the Belgian label will release music inspired by the much maligned proto-house genre from a selection of celebrated peers and contemporaries - all of whom appear under amusing New Beat style aliases. The debut release (or 'take' as they are being termed) features quite the high profile cast in Juju & Jordash, JD Twitch, WPH member Metrobox and, most intriguingly, a "big name UK house producer who wishes to remain anonymous". Amsterdam duo Juju & Jordash excel as Azab & Crybaby J, dropping a deep chugging acid meat grinder in "Agent Orange" whilst the aforementioned big name artist appears with a friend as DJ Ironfist, somehow referencing both New Beat and the crunchy techno of contemporary UK artists - watch out for that piano hook though! On the flip JD Twitch goes all out on "Just Like That" fully indulging his knowledge of New Beat with gleeful abandon for the highlight of this first EP in the series.

Maxim Lany - "Cuncambias"
Lemakuhlar - "Liser"
James Teej - "Dreaming Of A Grey Door"
Review: Belgian imprint We Play House follow up the rather quite excellent Son Soda album with this three tracker of chunky deep house on splendid red vinyl. Maxim Lany's "Cuncambias" is marked by a shimmering synth melody punctuated by beefy club drums and Middle Eastern vocal snatches. Flip over for Lemakuhlar's "Liser", a late night minimal house chugger, with nuances and subtleties that are best brought out on a perfectly tweaked soundsystem. Talented up-and-comer James Teej closes out with the moody chiming atmospherics of "Dreaming Of A Grey Door".

We Play House/Lany Recordings Summer Special 2010
Cat: WPHLANYSS 2010. Rel: 25 Aug 10

Deep House
Track 1
Track 2
Track 3
Review: With the release of San Soda's brilliantly diverse debut album nearly upon us, We Play House team up with sister imprint Lany Recordings for some last minute hype building on this summer sampler. The Belgian youngster delivers two tracks across the WPH side that delver further evidence of a talent that belies someone so young. "Birdies" is the most instantly rewarding track, driven by clever usage of a Motown classic, the distinct piano lines driving this slice of classic sounding house. "Voor De Sfeer" runs at a slower pace but burns deeper and bursts with energy when vintage rave melodies and vocal stutters are introduced. Lany honcho Maxim Lany oversees proceedings on the flip with "The Owgee" a straight up club cut. A tough compressed tech house groove is the backdrop to a harmonious vocal led melody that gets shifted above and below the mix with aplomb.

Deep House
Aquarius
Latency (Sunrise mix)
Review: Having first made his name on Hotflush and subsequently released for Turbo, it's about time Belgian producer Locked Groove made an appearance on his home country's finest house emporium We Play House. Making his debut on WPH coloured white label series, Locked Groove's two track 12" is accompanied by the following question from Red D, "Can the ugliness of the colour be more in contrast with the beauty of the tracks as is the case on WPH Brown?" Listening to lead track "Aquarius" the answer would have to be yes, as Locked Groove wrenches all manner of melodic emotion out of his cadre of machinery - wait for the piano drop! B side track "Latency (Sunrise mix)" could feasibly have been titled in honour of the breakout French label of the same name as it possesses a similar brand of star gazing house found on Latency releases from Joey Anderson and Innerspace Halflife.

Lemakuhlar & Red D - "Is Essit"
Social Disco Club & Red D - "We Made This Jack" (feat Metrobox)
Social Disco Club & Red D - "Need You" (feat Metrobox)
Review: We Play House social secretary Red D presents the first in what we hope is a long series of collaborative EPs which features the production talents of Lemakuhlar, Social Disco Club and Metrobox. No prizes for guessing the sounds that will roll out your speaker cones once the needle hits the vinyl, but this is still some truly classy house music. Red D shares the A Side with compatriots Lemakuhlar, serving up a slice of vintage Chicago bump on "Is Limited" laying out an infectious piano hook before an almighty wave of Midwest emotive textures arises and takes hold! Alongside it "Is Essit" presents a rawer, dusted sound with rough jacking pads splayed underneath a freaked out vocal hook - the left turn into sumptuous strings provides the wow factor. On the flip the Portugal vs Belgium dust up gets off to a great start with an exposition on the state of jacking house that is "We Made This Jack" which sees Metrobox's European tones ride the heavy jacking rhythms with aplomb. "Need You" is a more broken affair, with sparse percussion allowing the subby rhythmic thrust the space to dominate.

Review: Everyone at Juno HQ has been hanging out for this for a while now. We Play House starlet San Soda's debut opus Immers & Daarentegen is here, and, quite frankly, it's awesome. The 12" version comes with seven tracks on wax, plus the full 16 album songs on a free CD. Our fave is the head nodding groove of "Cocomo", which reminds us of I:Cube in his pomp, while the oven warm chords on "NMBSucks" and Jean Michel Jarre-esque vocals on "Shout In Peace" have us convinced that this 23-year-old has serious talent. The bonus CD includes some more experimental interludes alongside a sprinkling of San Soda's other work, including the instant classic house jam "Let's Go", which was originally released under the FCL moniker he shares with WPH boss Red D.

Bright Piano
Ode Aan De Verkeersdrempel
Hypocrisy
Middelmating 1993
Review: Following hot on the heels of his killer vocal house EP with We Play House boss Red D (under their new FCL moniker), San Soda returns to the Belgian imprint with this solo effort. Here we see the euphoric house of FCL replaced by more restrained yet equally danceable tunes, kicking off with "Bright Piano," which brings to mind Session Victim's recent hit, "The Keyboarder". "Ode Aan De Verkeersdrempel," which some light internet sleuthing revealed is Dutch for "Ode To The Traffic Threshold" (surely something lost in translation there), is another shimmering house jam. The EP winds down with the more restrained vibe of "Hypocrisy" and the delectable jazzy keys of "Middelmatig In 1993". Great little release from an up and coming producer.

Review: Damn! The Toch Al De Vijfde EP makes for a long overdue return to the solo release game for We Play House main man San Soda! We're not quite sure what the title means as we skipped Flemish A Level at school (Yet already the fifth?) but San Soda is truly on form here, dropping four fully fledged deep house gems - one of which features a certain Dresden dynamo called Jacob Korn! As soon as those oven warm keys spiral out in tandem with a classic house harmony on "You Hear Me" we expect this release will be on your want list but do check "See More Days" which features the aforementioned Korn as well as Hercules & Love Affair singer Gustaph, who belts out some Red D penned lyrics over the Korn Soda production with the sort of aplomb that obviously impressed Andy Butler.

Humandrone - "Tonight" (6:47)
San Soda - "Juno Love" (3:56)
Reggie Dokes - "Dream Catcher" (FCL edit) (8:50)
Review: The Ghent based We Play House imprint celebrates a decade in the business and what better way to commemorate such than a massive celebratory compilation. On the fifth volume here, label co-head San Soda contributes a couple of smashing tunes, such as the shimmering FM tones on "Retractor" (nailing a lush new-age aesthetic) while the deep/life-affirming soul jam "Juno Love" is not so much an ode to his favorite record store (in our dreams!), more the signature sound of that awesome bassline throughout. Elsewhere, Japan's Humandrone throws down a raw jackin' and acid soaked stormer in the form of "Tonight" and the legendary Reggie Dokes' "Dream Catcher" gets an FCL (San Soda & co-head Red D) edit from back in 2009.

Red D's We Play House Recordings Medley Vol 1 (continuous mix)
Review: Belgian wonderkid San Soda aka Nicolas Geysens drops his debut opus on Red D's We Play House label. In 2010 the fledgling WPH imprint has piqued the interest of house music cognoscenti across the world, thanks in no small part to the contribution of Geysens. Immers & Daarentegen showcases the full breadth of the 23-year-old's talent, with breakthrough hit (and Juno favourite) "Let's Go" - initially recorded with Red D under their FCL moniker - sitting alongside melodic deep house moments, atmospheric interludes and instrumental hip-hop. Immers & Daarentegen is available as a 2xCD package, with a bonus mix by label boss Red D containing a selection of WPH tracks past, present and future all recorded in one take with two turntables, one CDJ and a pristine collection of virgin WPH vinyls. Essential.

Great Cities (San Soda downtempo mix)
Theories
Review: With We Play House now firmly established as one of our favourite labels here at Juno HQ, it's safe to say each new 12" arrival on the imprint is met with an unrestrained squeal of delight. The 13th release from the WPH crew comes from label newcomer Sebastien San, with a sumptuous four track offering that comes with a remix from golden boy San Soda. "Great Cities" (Ad Lib) opens proceedings in a smoky, jazzed out manner, with twinkling keys working beneath a gently undulating synth line. This leads into the gentle understated glee of "Pulsation", before San Soda breathes some magic into the title track with his downtempo version. "Theories" by comparison is the most dancefloor driven of the four, a heads down roller with pumping chords making it perfect early night warehouse party tackle.
