Review: Wah Wah 45s' never-ending hunt for exciting funk talent continues as they introduce the one-man-wonder Gene Dudley. A highly talented multi-instrumentalist, Gene plays every note you hear on this 7", from the tight raspberry blowing horns to the swish-tickling drums. The title track is a Daptone-esque doo-wop with a neat refrain and simple Q&A structure while "The New Lots Of Cooperstown" meanders a little more into sombre soul territory. Two stunning instrumentals, one memorable introduction - Gene Dudley's talents are likely to take him far.

Review: With its unlikely cover versions ("Africa", "No Diggity" etc), there was an air of novelty about Hackney Colliery Band's self-titled 2011 debut album. Of course, the East London outfit were always about much more than that, as anyone who has seen one of their incendiary live shows will confirm. This sophomore set largely steers clear of crowd-pleasing novelties (though it does include a fantastic Prodigy medley and a cover of "Inner City Life"), instead focusing on original compositions, rasping big band jazz, New Orleans-style fare and the kind of life-affirming cuts that have made them such live favourites. As a result, it's arguably a much stronger set, with the ska-jazz centre-piece, "Hitched", being particularly memorable.
