Review: Ghanaian/UK outfit Isaac Birituro & The Rail Abandon won plenty of fans with the first two albums Kalba and Small Small now return with this seven track opus. It explores the traditional West African roots of their sound but also adds some freshness in the form of Birituro's xylophone as well as Sonny Johns' folky touches and the powerful vocals of Ghanaian songstress Wiyaala. You might well have already heard some of this on 6Music and will likely hear much more because it is hugely appealing and accessible music with devastating soul.

Review: Eparapo is a Yoruba word for joining forces, as well as the name of a Tony Allen track, and now it's been adopted as the banner for this project which serves as a kind of Afrobeat supergroup. The band came together in lockdown, driven by bassist and composer Suman Joshi, a member of Dele Sosimi's Afrobeat Orchestra. Given he's performed with the likes of Allen too, he's got the experience and vision to take Afrobeat's legacy forwards, which he does so with vivid force and urgent intent as he confronts the inequalities and societal ills thrown into sharp relief by the pandemic. It's music with a purpose played by some of the best in their field, with Sosimi and Afla Sackey also appearing - if you value Afrobeat as a continued, evolving vehicle of expression, this is essential listening.

Review: During the first COVID-19 lockdown of 20210, London-based afrobeat collective Eparapo, an - all-stars - outfit helmed by Afrobeat Orchestra member Suman Joshi and featuring his good friend Dele Sosimi, remotely recorded a handful of killer cuts. Two of these previously digital-only gems have finally made it to vinyl, accompanied by brand-new remixes. 'From London To Lagos' is an admirable commentary on corruption set to a fuzzy, infectious, Fela Kuti style afrobeat workout, while 'Black Lives Matter' is a slowed-down, stretched out and musically detailed affair that proudly takes aim on international racism. The 'Wheelup Remix' of 'From London To Lagos' cannily re-imagines the track as a tactile, spacey and bass-heavy chunk of shuffling deep house warmth, while Sam Redmore's revision of 'Black Lives Matter' gives the track a more dancefloor focused afrobeat twist.

Review: The Gene Dudley Group's debut album, Zambidoose, included one of the highlights of Summer 2015 - a righteous, brass-heavy funk cover of Todd Terje's nu-disco anthem "Inspector Norse". Here, other tracks from that set are given a new lease of life via three new remixes. Alexander Lay-Far kicks things off, subtly turning "Do The Cookie Dough Throw" into a righteous chunk of swinging, offbeat Latin house/funk fusion. In contrast, mixing desk maestro Wrongtom delivers a booming, bass-heavy dub reggae interpretation of "Tiger Jaw", while BJ Smith goes all warm, organic and Balearic on his invitingly sunny mix of "Jackpot", complete with dreamy vocals from Anne Frankenstein.

Review: Emerging on Wah Wah 45s this year, the 27 year-old North London-based multi-instrumentalist known as Gene Dudley has been one of modern funk's most memorable recent discoveries with high praise coming from the likes of Kenny Dope and Daz-I-Kue for his debut Saturday Shifting. Wah Wah bossmen Servini, Goss and Scrimshire do the wise thing here and present an addendum 45 featuring album highlight "The Hilo Bay Halfway" whose uptempo tropical nature makes it a perfect fit for the more discerning 45 selectors out there. Dudley further demonstrates how talented he is with a self styled 'disco dub' on the flip that adds some squelchy bass and generous handclaps to proceedings.

Review: One man funk machine Gene Dudley dishes up two more sticks of groove gelignite from his album Zambidoose earlier this year. Frequent collaborator Anne Frankenstein fronts the soul train chugger "Dynamite In The Still Of The Night", giving space for Gene's constant stop/start teases. "Pearl Baby, Pearl" whacks with more of a Booker T twang thanks to the lavish use of Hammond keys while E provides a rich gravelly vocal sheen. Grab this, then check the album if you haven't already - Gene is modern funk genius.

Review: Wah Wah 45s' never-ending hunt for exciting funk talent continues as they introduce the one-man-wonder Gene Dudley. A highly talented multi-instrumentalist, Gene plays every note you hear on this 7", from the tight raspberry blowing horns to the swish-tickling drums. The title track is a Daptone-esque doo-wop with a neat refrain and simple Q&A structure while "The New Lots Of Cooperstown" meanders a little more into sombre soul territory. Review: With its unlikely cover versions ("Africa", "No Diggity" etc), there was an air of novelty about Hackney Colliery Band's self-titled 2011 debut album. Of course, the East London outfit were always about much more than that, as anyone who has seen one of their incendiary live shows will confirm. This sophomore set largely steers clear of crowd-pleasing novelties (though it does include a fantastic Prodigy medley and a cover of "Inner City Life"), instead focusing on original compositions, rasping big band jazz, New Orleans-style fare and the kind of life-affirming cuts that have made them such live favourites. As a result, it's arguably a much stronger set, with the ska-jazz centre-piece, "Hitched", being particularly memorable.

Review: It's about time the HCB saw vinyl justice... Originally released in 2011, the band's breakthrough album sums up just why they've not left the spotlight since. Tight, playful and dynamic, the whole album leaps and struts from soft almost silent moments to crazed jazz frenzies where the players bounce off each other in a way only a brass band can. Complete with the awesome covers that most people will have found the band from ("No Diggity", "Africa", "Under The Bridge"), this has been crying for a vinyl outing since day one... And their second album Common Decency is en wax route very soon too.

Review: Record Store Day Edition: Stand up Wah Wah Records who celebrate fifteen years of dropping science and here their 50th release which ties in nicely with that Record Store Day everyone has been talking about. Arriving on the heavy duty 7" that Wah Wah have made their name on, the A Side here sees Hackney Colliery Band's killer cover of Kanye West's "All Of The Lights" get a rather tasty remix from label honcho Scrimshire which makes a dancefloor favourite even more hotter. Wah Wah's dedication to reissues over these past 15 years is represented too with the excellent late 70s jazz funker "Diskette" from Henri-Pierre Noel keeping the B Side warm.

Review: Much has changed for violinist, composer and singer-songwriter Bev Lee Harling since the release of her acclaimed debut album, Barefoot In Your Kitchen, nine years ago. It's these changes - parenthood, family life, the difficulty of retaining artistic creativity and vision when it plays second fiddle to other life commitments - that inspired Little Anchor, a sophomore album recorded at different times and places over the last decade. First and foremost, the song is full of superb songs with plenty to say, with Harling's distinctive vocal delivery being joined by imaginative musical arrangements (her violin is naturally present throughout) and production that variously touches on soul, future synth-pop, jazz and dreamy electronica.
