Cat: WRWTFWW 041. Rel: 01 May 19

Coldwave/Synth
Eisbar (4:48)
Film 2 (3:36)
Ich Lieb Sie (3:23)
Review: The latest outing from Swiss reissue specialists WRWTFWW takes us back to 1981 and the debut single from Bern-based post-punk combo Grauzone. The 12" release of "Eisbaer" has long been a must-have amongst fans of off-kilter, dancefloor-ready new wave, and this replica reissue includes all three tracks featured on that version. Opener "Eisbar" sets the tone, with the bands weary, half spoken/half sung vocals rising above a backing track that's powered forwards by relentless bass guitar, screeching riffs and broken computer style electronics. "Film 2" is a heavy, synthesizer powered workout peppered with delay-laden drum hits and odd noises, while closing cut "Ich Liebe Sie" is a clicking and quietly melodious affair that's almost entirely electronic.

Review: This is the first ever time that Omodaka's - Zentsuu: Collected Works 2001-2019 album has been made available on wax. Omodaka is an alias of Soichi Terada, a Japanese producer and composer who has become known in the west for his video game soundtracks and impossible happy and melodic house tunes. The project here was started back in 2001 while he was trying "to create a boat racing song". 80s designs, chiptune sounds, the vocals of Japanese folk min'yo and enka singer Akiko Kanazawa and fusions of house, jungle and video game sounds all make this a smile-inducing sonic adventure with plenty of dancefloor heft.

Review: Thanks to countless reissues of her impeccable new age ambient masterpiece, 'Through The Looking Glass', many more people are now familiar with the work of Japanese percussionist, producer and composer Midori Takada. Even so, 'Tree of Life' remains one of her lesser-celebrated albums - despite being a genuine masterpiece of minimalism and melodic percussion instrumentation. Here reissued on CD for the first time since the album's initial 1999 release in Japan - and this time with a new audiophile-friendly mix from Takada - the set blends xylophone, marimba, kalimba and other percussion instruments with Japanese style strings, strong melodies and nods towards the American minimalism of Steve Reich and Philip Glass.

Quiet Logic

Ambient/Drone
Review: Back in the 1990s, the combination of Mixmaster Morris, Jonah Sharp (he of Spacetime Continuum fame) and Haruomi Hosono was the closest thing you got to an ambient supergroup (the Orb's collaboration with Robert Fripp and Thomas Fehlmann as FFWD not withstanding). The trio only recorded one album together, the sublime Quiet Logic, but it's an absolute doozy - as this timely reissue proves. For one reason or another, it was only ever released in Japan at the time, meaning this is the first time it has been available worldwide. As you'd expect with such masters of the art form at the helm, it is genuinely superb - a slowly evolving opus that moves between unfurling, dub-fired ambient techno ('Waraitake') to ambient jazz eccentricity ('Dr Gauss/Yakan Hiko (Night Flight)'), via deep ambient d&b ('Uchu Yuei (Night Swimming)') and deep space ambient.

Review: Having previously reissued Mkwaju Ensemble's inspired 1981 debut "Ki-Motion", WRWTFWW now turns its attention to their equally impressive follow-up from the same year, "Mkwaju". Beginning with a breezy chunk of Marimba-driven four-to-the-floor bliss, the album sees the Japanese trio - whose members included legendary percussionist and ambient artist Midori Takada - shuffle between hypnotic, Steve Reich-influenced minimalism ("Shak Shak"), melodious fusions of new age electronica and modern American classical ("Tira-Rin"), and glacial ambient soundscapes ("Pulse In The Mind"). Best of all, though, is "Flash-Back", a dense and intoxicating percussion workout that stretches out over 13 mind-bending minutes.

Review: Japanese minimal figurehead Midori Takada released Tree Of Life as a CD-only album in 1999. It's a stark work primarily centered around Takada's marimba, bells and drums, with additional erhu played by Jiang Jian-hua, and it's remarkable in its delicacy and minimalism. Fans of Takada's widely acclaimed Through The Looking Glass might well learn about other aspects of the seasoned artist's approach on this album, which receives a lavish half-speed mastering treatment courtesy of WRWTFWW, one of the labels closely associated with resurgent interest in Takada's compelling work. There's a consistent patience and sense of calm which makes it an engrossing listen from start to finish.

WRWTFWW Records have got the official rights to reissue Daisaku Kume's iconic soundtrack to Violent Cop, a highly acclaimed 1989 Japanese crime and drama movie that is now available outside of Japan for the first time in its history. The movie marked Takeshi Kitano's directorial debut and is a grotty new-noir staring a rogue detective and sadistic crime syndicate. The soundtrack ranges from smooth jazz melancholy to late 70s fusion and is a superb blend of atmospheric and dramatic genres including elements of ambient-classical, and modern Western atmospherics making it the perfect accompaniment to the lead lonesome urban cowboy character.

Review: Conceptually derived from the work of Japanese minimalist composer Satoshi Ashikawa, Dublin-based composer Gareth Quinn Redmond has created an album of environmental music which he hopes will engage, enrich and reflect the listener's surroundings. This is a companion album to Ashikawa's 1982 LP Still Way, which was originally released as part of the wave notation series which also included Hiroshi Yoshimura's seminal Music For Nine Postcards. The album takes Ashikawa's meditative sound designs to more dramatic and lyrical landscapes, gracefully instilling his personal touch into the master's melodic patterns to present six pieces which blend and reflect the modern listener's ever changing environment.

Review: For the latest release in their ongoing "Esplande Series" focusing on the work of Japanese ambient minimalists, Swiss reissue specialists WRWTFWW have decided to deliver a new edition of Motohiko Hamase's rather good - but very hard to find - 1988 release "Notes of Forestry". It remains a remarkable work, sitting somewhere between the fluid and heavenly electronics of new age ambient, the cyclical minimalist movements of Steve Reich, free-jazz and the kind of free-wheeling, loose-limbed works most often associated with experimental percussionists. Hamase is a bass player by trade, and its' his fast-fingered fretless bass playing that catches the ear throughout (though it by no means dominates the sound space).

Review: Earlier in the year, Midori Takada released his first new solo album in 23 years - a breathlessly brilliant Afro-ambient extravaganza recorded "in a live setting" and utilising instruments held in the MEG Museum in Geneva. Recorded in 2918 and similarly produced with assistance from the museum, You Who Are Leaving sees the long-serving Japanese percussionist combine his own spiritual compositions with vintage recordings of chants by a Buddhist choir, led by Reverend Syuukoh Ikaw. For the most part, it's a sparse, haunting and intoxicating affair, with sustained chants being combined with all manner of percussion instruments (bells, cymbals, chimes, glass bowls) and plenty of studio effects to create mesmerising soundscapes. It's very good all told - so much so that it will likely one day be considered a new age ambient masterpiece.

Review: Although experimental in nature - most of his music is made from crackling, ultra-atmospheric tape loops - Gareth Quinn Redmond's music is breathlessly beautiful and universally beguiling. He's already proved that on his previous LPs - not least 2019's Satoshi Ashikawa-inspired 'Laistigh Den Ghleo' - but once again confirms it on 'Ar Ais Aris'. He describes the eight-track set as "daydreaming environmental music full of accidental miracles and soothing backdrops", and that's an apt description. Ghostly melodies and enveloping chords, sometimes manipulated for extra wooziness, emerge from dense forests of tape hiss and static, creating becalmed ambient soundscapes that tend towards the poignant and picturesque. There aren't many copies around, so we'd recommend pre-ordering to secure a copy.

Review: Prepare for some serious relaxation and blissful mood setting. First, though, formalities. Takashi Kokurbo, for those who don't know, is an experiment Japanese musician specialising in what he has termed environmental ambient. And by that we mean music that is inspired by and looks to invoke the natural world, its beauty and fragility, the softness of what's there if you listen hard enough beyond the human realm. Meanwhile, Andrew Esperti is an Italian-Swiss trombonist of global repute. Taking recordings of 'nature noises' from around the world, and aligning these with some seriously easy going and subtle brass tones, the result sees all those troubles, whatever they were, float away into the distance while your bed morphs into a blanket of clouds. Meditative atmospherics with incredibly potent effects.

Review: Hako Yamasaki is a chinstrokers' legend of Japanese folk music, releasing 22 sensitive jazz and easy listening albums since her debut in 1975. Tobimasu (Flying) is her first album and is largely an introductory showcase of her talents: haunting vocals, poetic lyrics, acoustic guitar. What ensued was the entrenching of Yamasaki's into public memory - here was something about her mixture teenage angst, feminist themes and grounding in 1970s new age culture that the music-loving public simply could not resist.

Review: Full HD re-creation and restoration of the legendary soundtrack for 1994 Exploration / Action-Adventure / Sci-Fi / Alien video game Super Metroid, by Louisiana-based composer and producer Jammin' Sam Miller. Miller explains: "Composed by Kenji Yamamoto. Recreated by me. This was made possible by locating the original instrument samples from workstation keyboards and drum machines before they were put into the game and rebuilding the soundtrack from the ground up, applying some modern mixing techniques along the way to lift the veil of 16bit compression and create an updated listening experience." Revamped on a deluxe 12" record, and with killer mastering, clean mixing, and a stonking album cover to boot, this is for anyone with a penchant for the more eclectic ends of videogame music.

Review: Originally released in 1998, Mixmaster Morris & Jonah Sharp's Quiet Logic surprisingly flew under the radar when it came out.- perhaps because of the huge amount of electronic music being released at the time. The pair have some of the most important albums and tracks in their respected genres and are arguably two of the most important figures in the electronic music chill out scene from the 90s, and when you add the input of Haruomi Hosono from Yellow Magic Orchestra on two tracks, it becomes an even more essential listen. Chill out heads unite!

Review: In 1984 Japanese pianist Satsuki Shibano composed and compiled a series of reinterpretations of compositions by the French composer Erik Satie - in turn known for his minimalist and avant-garde works, the 'Gymnopedie' the most ubiquitous among them. Shibano's takes on an incredible quantity of Satie's works, from 'La Balancoire' to 'Voix D'interieur', are about as pure as piano compositions can get, starkly carving out their nearly Platonic form.. This reissue via WRWTFWW also features the original artwork by Shinro Ohtake.
