Review: Acid Arab is a collaboration between Guido Minisky and Herve Carvalho, which seeks to unite the worlds of underground dance music and Middle Eastern tradition. In the wrong hands, this could have ended horribly, sounding like an advert for a package tour to Morocco. Thankfully on El Maghreb, for I:Cube's always essential Versatile, the pair manage to bring these two worlds together with great flair. The most functional track is "Mogador (club version)", where dense drums and spiraling horns create a fantastical, frenzied track. However, it's not hard to escape the notion that Acid Arab are capable of far more adventurous combinations and this is audible on the hypnotic, mysterious pipe playing and seductive pulses of "Hafla" and on "Amal", a slow-motion, dubbed out mood music piece.

Review: To date, the Acid Arab Collections EPs and CD - compiled by the Paris-based producers behind the concept, Guido Minisky and Herve Carvalho (who DJ/produce under the Acid Arab alias) - have been little less than stunning. This third vinyl-only EP is of a similar standard. As usual, there's a strong focus on house and techno, with Middle Eastern instrumentation, vocals and samples atop. Highlights include the raw, heavy pump of Society of Silence's deliciously distorted "Baghdad", the spiraling, Brown Album-era Oribital style intoxication of An-I & Capablancas "Farsi Farce", and the ghostly horns and humid pulse of Gilb'r Beesan Rum's "A Song For Anna".

Review: Parisian duo Acid Arab are men with a plan: namely, to get friends from the house and techno scene to create tracks that mix the stripped-back intensity of analogue acid house with the intoxicating rhythms, sounds and instrumentation from the Orient. It's a devilishly simple formula, but one that offers plenty of scope for experimentation. The results, as showcased on this first compilation for Versatile, are rarely less than superb. From the Middle Eastern-goes-cosmic disco pulse of Professor Genius and Exotic post-punk shuffle of Hanaa Ouassim, to the ragged but humid stomp of I:Cube and thumping, psychedelic electronics of Renart, Acid Arab Collections is full of weird, wonderful and downright thrilling surprises.

Review: The always debonair Versatile present this Gallic dust up of epic proportions, serving up the first single from the debut album by Aladdin. If you've not checked the LP yet, "The Sun Is On Fire" is a perfect demonstration of the fuzzed out new wave sound that streams throughout. This twelve is all about the remixes however, with both I:Cube and Bot'Ox on hand with the former's take on "Mass Confusion" revelatory! We're big fans of I:Cube here but would never have guessed he would deliver the driving, psychedelic, motorik goth disco monster that you just picture Sir Weatherall destroying a Dalston basement with. In contrast, Bot'Ox draw on the darker undercurrents of the same track for a rubbery, analogue electro noir refix that builds expertly.

Review: The Girls In Uniform 12" sees Poni Hoaxer Nicolas Ker and Versatile boss Gilbert Cohen revisit their Aladdin project. Legend has it heartbreak brought the two to form Aladdin, seeking solace in making music together after being dumped by their respective girlfriends. After a debut album back in 2011, the project was put on the shelf but the pair decided to get back in the studio at the behest of "a well-known energy drink" for a session with some killer musicians. The result on "Girls In Uniform" is a strange brew of rock, dub, and kraut and sounds wholly suited to Versatile, as do the accompanying versions from Trevor Jackson and Cohen.. The latter's dub version under the Graal alias is apparently one of the first recordings to roll out of his new Amsterdam studio!

Review: Responsible for housing an array of beloved French talent like I:Cube, Joakim, Chateau Flight and Zombie Zombie, the Versatile label opens its doors to ARK with the Street House EP. The A-side features two versions of "Emba Anthem"; the first is a sleazy house jam that veers into ghetto and footwork terrain with its use of snappy east coast hip hop vocals shortened to focus on one or two words. The other version - a dubbier and reduced mix - features the same vocals, only used sparingly to give the track a drowsy pace made for settling the floor, not raising the roof. The B-side has two more versions of the same track, this time "Nuark". Rapid fire claps sequenced like Steve Reich's Clapping Music give the track its linear flow, which hold rocksteady alongside swirling synths, reversed strings and pained Gil Scott Heron vocals. The dub version sees a thickened low end pump more power into its original groove, warranting the track for peak time play.

Review: There has never been a moment in time where France's Versatile imprint stopped to innovate and evolve. They are, without a doubt, one off the most prolific and trusted imprints to have ever graced our dance charts over the years. As such, they're back with a collaboration from two compatriots, the renowned Pierre Bastien (Rephlex, Morphine etc etc), and relative newcomer Eddie Ladoire. The duo have only recently struck a studio relationship, thanks to an LP for Un Je-Ne-Sais-Quoi, and they are clearly in sync. Phantom Dance consists of one original, a vast, explorative journey of synths held together by a loose percussion, a remix from Suzanne Kraft, who comes through with a more dubby, beat-heavy approach, and two more mixes - the killer Oceanic club version, and the loser, ambient-rich Oceanic Garden version.

Review: It's been a while since we last heard from Jan Schulte and Diskoking Burnhart McKoolski's Bufiman project - two years, in fact. After previously plying their wares on Verein Freir Menschen und Musik, the eccentric Balearic/disco duo have been snapped up by Gilb'r's Versatile imprint. "Running (The Chase)" is something of a killer - a driving chunk of clavinet-laden disco fuelled by a seriously heavy post-punk/dub disco bassline. "Kavalier" is deeper and spookier, with new age synth melodies riding a loose, Afro-influenced groove. The slower "Bonobobeat", meanwhile, is a low-slung delight, with snaking synthesizer lines wrapping themselves around dense, head-nodding disco percussion.

Review: The Cave Bear Cult is a new producer on Versatile coming from Berlin with his first release, "Keep On Keepin' On". Behind this mysterious moniker we find Jorg Ehlert, who discovered electronic music 15 years ago through labels and artist like Basic Channel, Axis, UR, Carl Craig and Dance Mania etc. The a-side start with the real floor filler, "Keep on Keepin' On". After a deep intro this track gets huge with its hypnotic synth. "Catch The Worm" continues in the house vein, but with a nu disco touch. A perfect link between all NYC producers, from Mr V and Masters At Work to Metro Area. "Remembering Mr K Alexi Shelby" sounds like a perfect tribute to all Chicago masters while with "Spaghettidisco" the Cave Bear Cult get back to the 80's with a warm Italo track.

Review: In October, Gilbr's Vesatile imprint will release a collection of obscure French disco, boogie and synth wave jams put together by renowned Parisian crate digger Vidal Benjamin. Here, the label presents a second sampler, featuring re-edits of cuts on the comp. The real killer is Jean Marc Misere's Pure Beat Edit of Raymond Et Les Moutards' "Y'en A Marre", which turns the original into a locked-in chunk of dancefloor-friendly boogie underpinned by a superbly rubbery bassline. The A-side edit of "Gibraltar" by Marc Chantereau is pretty tasty, too, with the eccentric original - all whoops, loose disco and zany vocals - being given a well-judged dancefloor tweak.

Review: "Les Vampires" was a series of 10 silent film episodes by French director Louis Feuillade. Almost banned upon it's initial release in 1915, the film became a huge success, influencing Fritz Lang for Dr Mabuse among others. for the DVD release Gaumont asked Chateau Flight to do a 40 minutes soundtrack which is presented here as a CD. It combines the synthetique influences of I:CUBE ( Kraftwerk, Maurizio, Steve Reich etc ) with the hypnosis of krautrock and the plentifulness of psychedelic music. a perfect companion to the phantasmagorial and pre-surrealism picture, the music beautifully bridges the gap between experimental movie and electronic music.

Review: A second volume in the Versatile Classics series arrives some two years after the French label launched the offshoot, and such delays can be forgiven when a chance to indulge in two seminal Chateau Flight productions are afforded. First released in 2002, the intricate melodies of "Cosmic Race" sounds just as mind bendingly beautiful some ten years on and it remains a smouldering example of deep house in it's truest and most powerfully potent form (A little tip - try at 33rpm for excellent beatdown results) "Instant Replay" is two years older, featuring on Cohen and Chaix's debut Chateau Flight LP Puzzle, and cloaks the classic Gallic house tropes of filtered disco in their own inimitable production style. Review: Having impressed many with his excellent M for Megamix LP as I:Cube, Nicolas Chaix returns to the Chateau Flight operation he mans with Versatile Records boss Gilb'r for their first original material in over 12 months. It's pretty hard to describe "Kounka" in genre specific terms, with the track seemingly overloaded with rhythmic and textural twists and turns over the course of its duration. Commencing in some sort of ascendant cosmic Italo strut, "Kounka" embarks on the first of many swerves as the grubby kick mainlines into action and veers off into weirdo Gallic bleep. Pick yourself up off the floor and flip the record over and you have the added treat of not one but two Steve Moore remixes, with the LIES and Future Times artist on typically rich and hypnotic form. Somehow harnessing the unbridled sonic chaos of the source material, Moore invites us into the deepest recesses of endlessly building, multi layered dancefloor intoxication on the first remix, while the self styled "Off-World" version pitches down into the realm of luxuriant cosmiche.

Review: The Chateau Flight duo of I:Cube and Gilb'r pull a Richie Havens on "Chichi Devils" and go back to their roots referencing early Chicago house and the latter days of the cold wave movement with resolutely impressive results. Currently finding favour in the peak time sets of Mr Erol Alkan, "Chichi Devils" delights with a raucously raw approach to production, eschewing any attempts at polishing up the sound. A burning synth stab wrapped around the singular thud of a kick drum is the core thrust around which subtle floating sonics bubble away deep in the mix, whilst metallic bass textures add the requisite menace. Magnifique!

Review: Chateau Flight's ongoing Classics series offers a neat reminder of not only their immense talents for creating emotion-rich electronic music, but also just how long they've been operating. Most will have missed lead cut "Pergola" - a delightful foray into wide-eyed Detroit futurism which makes great use of bubbling synth bass and darting electronic melodies - on its initial release in 2001, while the dubbier "The Rise & Fall of Babylon" is arguably even more obscure, having appeared on the overlooked (but excellent) Trip Do West EP on Rhythmix back in 2003. As with much of the Parisian duo's work since the turn of the millennium, both tracks are essential.

Review: French outfit Chateau Flight have spent two years in the studio making music, playing around and experimenting and now the fruits of that work are presented on this new album La Folie Studio. It is full of the sound of analogue machines conversing and the artists themselves speaking through their darkened basslines or eerie pads. Occult worlds are crafted, ambient soundscapes are cooked up and leftfield cosmic explorations occur throughout a journeying album full of a wide range of emotions. This lovely record features guests on the odd track such as Johnny Nash on guitar, Cosmic Neman mumbling on 'Mange', John Cravache playing 'his special organ" and Bony Bikaye singing on 'Esika Molimo Ezali'. It's an occult world of left of centre sound that will keep you coming back for more.

Review: Versatile offer something a little different from the norm here, as they present the results of a collaboration between label regulars Chateau Flight and French ensemble Le Cabaret Contemporain, who came together to record two live covers of pieces by minimalist composer Terry Riley. Recorded in the Vogue Studio in Paris, both "Persian Surgery" and "Desert Of Ice" were recorded in a single live take, and capture the hypnotic quality of Riley's originals whilst adding contemporary electronics which straddle the line between the dancefloor and the experimental realm. Surprisingly good stuff.
