Review: Since delivering his debut album, Chapters, on Tru Thoughts back in 2011, Anchorsong has become renowned for creating beautiful, deep and picturesque electronic music using only an MPC-2500 and a keyboard. Here, he finally delivers a follow-up, and it's every bit as beguiling as its' predecessor. While there are plenty of moments of fluid, eyes-shut beauty - see "Eve", "Oriental Suite", "Butterflies" and the outstanding "Monsoon" - the Japanese producer wisely chooses to mix things up a little. Thus, you'll also find crunchy beats ("Expo"), bass-heavy, steel drums-laden groovers ("Rendezvous"), and humid, tropical workouts ("Last Feast"). Throughout, his dedication to mood and melody remains in tact.

Review: The Bamboos, an Australian funk six piece, are big funk collectors and inspired by artists such as The Meters, Mickey & the Soul Generation, Jimmy Smith and Reuben Wilson, but have a contemporary deep funk sound too. "Rawville" still embraces the deep raw organ based funk aesthetic of their album "Step It Up", but it also embraces different flavours. "Rawville" is a lot more song-based than "Step It Up". The album is half vocal based tunes and half instrumental. Vocals include those from label mate Alice Russell as well as vocalists Kylie Auldist, Tyra Hammond (Opens Souls), Fallon Williams and Ohmega Watts (Ubiquity). The Bamboos took a larger horn section into the studio for this album, so the horns are thicker and more experimental in terms if harmonies. You will hear influences from the JB's, Alice Clark, and early Kool & The Gang coming through on the horn arrangements.

Review: Belleruche's new album, "Turntable Soul Music", includes tracks that conjure thoughts of Stax Records recording Django Rheinhardt with Dr Dre controlling the mixing desk, or Eryka Badu jamming with Mixmaster Mike recorded onto analogue tape by the Dust Brothers. Since then, they've become one of Tru Thoughts' most reliable acts, delivering a series of albums that join the dots between nu-jazz, funk, soul and wide-eyed downtempo beats. Here, Rob Luis' label celebrates their career to date, offering a warranted Best Of... that includes remastered versions of many of their greatest moments. Highligthts are plentiful, from the string-laden soul shuffle of "3 Amp Fuse" and jazz-flecked bump of "Minor Swing", to the lo-fi soul-rock of "Stormbird" and the downtempo beats of "16 Minutes".

Review: It would be fair to say that self-styled cheeky monkey Benji Boko is better known for his incendiary "live remix" shows - a festival-rocking excuse to mash-up old and new records using samplers, sequencers and the like - than his own productions. This debut album may change all that. In true hip-hop style, it's an all-action patchwork of charity shop beats and samples, funtime skits, dancefloor-centric bangers (check out the reggae hip-hop smasher "No. 1 Sound" with veteran soundsystem toaster Ricky Rankin) and other kaleidoscopic audio treats. As you can imagine, Boko doesn't take himself too seriously, but there's enough quality here to prevent Beats, Treats & All Things Unique slipping into novelty territory.

Review: Given his nu-jazz heritage and Herbie Hancock-ish keyboard skills, it was probably only a matter of time before Mark de Clive-Lowe went the whole hog and made a "proper jazz" album. To do it, he's teamed up with Dutch trumpeter Rob van de Wouw and his Rotterdam Jazz Orchestra. Inspired by a mix of big band jazz, John Coltrane, Miles Davis and Sun Ra, Take The Space Trane is an enjoyable romp through Clive-Lowe and Wouw's influences. While there's some great improv playing and a touch of freestyle about tracks such as "Relax Unwind", it never gets overbearing. And when it really flies - such as on the percussive, Herbie Hancock-meets-Tito Puente madness of the title track - Take The Space Trane is terrific.

Review: Having been a star on Brighton-based label Tru Thoughts for over seven years now, Flevans has built up a global fanbase through his three studio albums. The last of these, 27 Devils, saw him ditch his trusty sample collection and go 100% live and now as an accompaniment, he's dropped The 28th Devil which collects remixes and reworkings of that set and more. It's a seriously funky affair, with loads of it aimed straight at the dancefloor.
The new mix of 27 Devils sets the tone nicely, balancing pacey live drums and brass perfectly. All To Play For is a rare moment of downtempo intensity on the album, but Flevans uses Shona Foster's vocal to maximum effect by building it up from a whisper quiet start. Bamboos' vocalist Kylie Auldist also appears on the album and gives some serious soul power on One Goodbye, which gets a tight reworking by Flevans.
The funk flows further on his mix of Ez A Divat's These People, which captures some vintage New Orleans-style drumming, and on Second Bite which has a Ska flavour complete with some backbeat-riding brass hits. Hold On takes the bpm's down a bit to a cool mid-tempo swing, and has a classic feel that makes you wish all pop music sounded this perfect.
Flevan's own material gets the once over from some notable names like Regal, who adds a cheeky sample from Les McCann's Harlem Buck Dance Strut onto the brilliant Lay Back, and from Azaxx who tastefully chops up Hold No Water and adds some bottom-end for good measure. Probably the most drastic overhaul though comes from Budapest duo Vono Box, who marry the vocal from Hold On with a slinky 50's big band sample straight from the Henry Mancini school of Exotica. A weird but wonderful mix that definitely needs to be heard!
This is another essential Tru Thoughts release, and just what you'd expect from such a distinctive label and artist.

Review: We've now come accustomed to sometimes unlikely cross-cultural musical fusions, though this album is the first we've come across that takes North African Gnawa music - one of the oldest Moroccan cultural traditions, fact fans - and fuses it with 21st century electronics and dancefloor-centric rhythms. It features vocals and traditional instrumentation from a renowned master of Gnawa, Rabii Harnoune, blended with the infectious grooves, contemporary synthesiser sounds and bass-weight of VB Kuhl, a Frankfurt-based producer whose roots are in off-kilter hip-hop. It's perhaps an unlikely pairing, but the results are simply superb. Don't take our word for it though - check it out for yourself. We'd be surprised if you weren't impressed.

Review: Given the amount of talent that Tru Thoughts have unearthed on their own doorstep over the years, Brighton must be jam-packed with young producers. Here they give a break to another local lad, the hitherto unknown Beta Hector. His sound is decidedly looser and more chemically frazzled then many of his label mates, giving Sunbeam Insulin a crackly, lo-fi quality often missing from Tru Thoughts releases. Musically, the 13 tracks here touch on psychedelic rock, hip-hop, creaky soul, muddy funk breaks, wired electronica, old skool electro and creepy downtempo beats. Think Four Tet after a fistful of acid tabs, jamming with Nostalgia 77 and Newcleus, and you're close to the Beta Hector sound.
