Review: 45 years after this 45 first surfaced it makes it back onto 45rpm. It is a stone cold north soul classic whose story starts when celebrated UK producer and songwriter Ian Levine linked up with Chicago studio wizards Paul Wilson and Danny Leak and vocalists Barbara Pennington, LJ Johnson and Evelyn Thomas. The results gave Levin his UK chart debut and encouraged him to work with Barbara Pennington once again on the huge '24 Hours A Day'. Aimed squarely at the booming US disco scene it was an immediate hit with hits high speed grooves and relentless strings, stunning vocal and rich production. Here it is presented with a second version of the same tune featuring a male vocalist. Gold.

Review: Best known for being the backing band for countless soul singers - most notably Emilia Sisco, Willie West and Thee Baby Cuffs - Timmion Records regulars Cold Diamond & Mink have finally been given a chance to take centre stage. "Here Today, Gone Tomorrow" is the tight funk and soul combo's debut album and contains ten killer cuts from the Finnish combo in their usual jazz-flecked 1960s/early '70s funk and soul sound. Highlights are plentiful from start to finish, with the hazy bustle of "Remember Me", the super-sweet and glistening "Ain't That Love" and rush-inducing "This Is What Love Looks Like!" amongst our current favourites.

Review: Ernie Hawks & The Soul Investigators return to Timmion with a pair of brand-new soul scorchers, and this ain't no reissue business. For real. As per usual, the imprint know exactly where to source the very best in the contemporary gear while everyone else is looking to the 70s for that adrenaline rush. As it turns out, this is some marvellously constructed soul music, right from the heart and soul, with "Cold Turkey Last Time" and "Trackin' Down" containing all the elements of fine ballads that are both future-proof and utterly stand-out. Check it and don't wreck it.

Review: Ernie Hawks is the occasional artistic alias of virtuoso flautist and trombonist Erno Haukkala, a Helsinki-based musician best known for his membership of long-serving Finnish funk combo the Soul Investigators. Fittingly, his debut solo album was produced in cahoots with the long-running band. Throughout, his band-mates provide brilliant backing for his languid trombone solos, jaunty flute lines and - on rare occasions - wild harmonica playing. It's a very enjoyable and impressive set, all told, with Haukkala's compositions variously drawing influence from classic soul, Cymande, Ennio Morricone's "Spaghetti Western" soundtracks and the higher quality end of the library music spectrum. Naturally, it's all brilliantly played and produced with an emphasis on gentle mood enhancement.

Review: Finnish revivalist funk combo the Soul Investigators are no strangers to collaboration, having previously provided backing for Nicole Willis, Myron and Ernie Hawks. Here, they once again join forces with the latter for two more chunks of instrumental funk and soul goodness. A-side "Scorpio Walk" is the kind of cut that should come with its own named dance; a shuffling, mid-tempo funk affair that layers Spaghetti Western guitar solos and fluttering flute lines over a backing track rich in flanged guitar licks, bustling bass guitar and on-point drum breaks. Flipside "Message of Love" is an altogether deeper and more dewy-eyed affair, with woozy backing vocals and electric piano solos rising above a shuffling groove.

Review: The Finish scene owes a lot to the Timmion label and this is further proof why. Carlton Jumel Smith returns to the label with another of his infectiously groovy and romantic offerings. This contemporary soul star won plenty of fans over with his last album for the 1634 Lexington Ave. label and now he's back with a trilogy of new tunes. The first is 'Devoted To You' on this 7" and it is a gorgeous affair with languid horns and seductive acoustic guitars while the soaring vocals bring realness and rawness. On the flip is a stripped back instrumental that allows the musician to really breath.

Review: New York soul singer and performer CJ Smith links up with The Timmion Records studio band for another of his era-spanning singles. It's a golden affair with a luxurious sound that takes in soaring trumpets and squelchy keys. The rolling drums are airy and light and Carlton Jumel Smith turns in a fine performance, his slightly gravely voice delivering the vocals with real pathos's he pays tribute to the woman who made him. The flip has an instrumental version making this yet another tidy 7".

Review: Second time around for Timmion's brilliant 2009 compilation of Little Ann's previously unreleased late 1960s soul recordings, Deep Shadows. Famously, the artist - real name Ann Bridgeforth - never tasted the success at the time she was recording her Chicago soul gems, and it was only when a couple of British soul collectors uncovered her original session recordings in the 1990s that the quality of her unreleased work became more widely known. Featuring a mixture of emotion-rich stompers, slow jams, dancefloor-ready sing-alongs and sugary torch songs, Deep Shadows is a superb introduction to the late singer's work that puts her terrific voice front and centre. This edition has also been pressed to gold coloured vinyl, making it even more desirable.

Review: The Soul Investigators from Finland are one of the most dynamic, talented and exiting groups to have hit the specialist funk scene in the past decade. Since 2001 the outfit have had releases on their own and been joined by a variety of vocalists including Myron And E, Big Joe Louis and Herb Johnson. On this new dinked 45 from Timmion the band get together for what sounds like an instrumental alternative rendition of the funk classic ''Tighten Up'', and trust us when we say that there's nothing 'Make it Mellow' about it! Throbbing bass pulsates through the track whilst fatback drums with great brass stabs work their magic. Part 2 is more of the same but with separate trumpet and bubblin' organ solos.

Review: Taking time out from Nicole Willis's strict schedule, Finland's most famous funk troupe The Soul Investigators hook up with flautist Jimi Tenor for two soulful, imagination-grabbing instrumentals. "Vulture's Prayer" is a softer, more languishing, reflective piece where the wah wah guitars shimmer and ripple underneath a thoughtful - but never overcooked - flute line. Hungry for more bite? Flip for "Bad Vibrations". A deep funk cut with a rhythm that's built up around a crisply plucked guitar line allowing Jimi to blow his thing as wildly as he likes.

The collective has been going since the mid 1990s and over the years has worked with all manner of neo-soul artists. Here they join forces with an old pal, eccentric lounge-jazz veteran Jimi Tenor, for two laidback soul instrumentals. This time round, there's no singing from Tenor; instead, he delivers a couple of atmospheric, elongated flute solos. You'll find his distinctive work on both the atmospheric, vibraphone-sporting 'Vulture's Prayer', and 'Bad Vibrations', a funk-tinged slab of horizontal instrumental soul that's as breezy as an autumnal morning in Helsinki.
