Review: Mathijs Smit's debut EP on Superlux Records, titled Twisted Minds, is a triumphant return for the label after a brief hiatus. Smit's hybrid production style and distinctive vocoder work immediately caught the attention of the Superlux crew, and Twisted Minds does not disappoint. The EP features four modern and stylish house cuts, each showcasing Smit's versatility and development in the studio. Side-1 kicks off with 'Changed My Mind (But Not Myself),' a sleek and forward-thinking house jam that blends elements of the past with fast-paced organ bass melodies and intricate drum-machine programming. My Mind Is Yours' follows with shades of golden-era Italian progressive, serving as a no-nonsense feel-good party starter. On the second side, 'Plugger' delves deeper into the groove with a shuffling beat and moody bassline, accented by acid flourishes for a basement feel. Finally, 'Quiero' closes out the EP with interminable funkiness, leaving a lasting impression and cementing Smit's place as a valuable addition to Superlux's roster. 'Twisted Minds' continues Superlux's tradition of discerning dance music, and with Smit on board, the label is poised for further growth and success in 2024 and beyond.
