Koyaanisqatsi: A New Score
Koyaanisqatsi: A New Score (limited white vinyl LP)
Cat: SRV 524. Rel: 24 Nov 22

Experimental/Electronic
Track 1 (23:33)
Track 2 (12:47)
Track 3 (10:41)
Review: Chantal Acda is known for penning and performing immersive dark folk music, while Eric Theilemans reputation as a master of percussion that focuses on anything but drums (well, OK, some drums) precedes him. Put them both together, then, and chances are you're not going to come up with the latest throwaway chart hit. Instead, we're offered one of those records that needs time to digest, not least if you already know the movie Koyaansqatsi and its original soundtrack.
A New Score was written for a live performance accompanying a screening of that film, but also works incredibly well as a standalone record. Adventurous and deeply human, it invokes images of landscapes that never give up, accentuating our spiritual connection to the planet ('Track 3'), while also managing to experiment with structure and samples, in turn nodding to the machines and electronics involved in its creation ('Track 2', for example).

Le Reveur Au Sourire Passager (20:53)
Review: Leo Kupper is synonymous with the genealogy of Belgian electronic music. Working with Henri Pousseur, the pair manned their country's first electronic music studio, Apelac, from 1959-62, and Kupper would go on to found Studio de Recherches et de Structurations Electroniques Auditives and Sound Domes in Roma, Linz, Venice, and Avignon before the 1990s hit.

Here we're given a collection of - as the title suggests - work and voices from that latter period, and it all could easily have been made a moment ago. Capturing everything from sweet bird song to looped human chants, there's definitely a purity here but no naivety. 'La Revere Au Sourire Passager' taking things into slightly distressing places with its cut and chopped recordings of conversations coming in and out of earshot, 'Aerosons' brings an air of the fantastic to the opening. Musique concrete, ambient, field recording, and a few other terms besides.

Review: Tantalisingly difficult to categorise, Oiseaux-Tempete return with their sixth studio album, dense and challenging - but also rewarding - as ever. The project is Paris-based but features members of much celebrated acts like SUUNS and Jerusalem In My Heart, and this LP seems to revolve around centrepiece 'A Man Alone In A One Man Poem', an 11 minute epic of sequencer throb, frantic live drumming and dark poetry. At the other end of the spectrum, the sonic purity of 'Terminal Velocity' - almost entirely made up of violin notes - and Tortoise-like ambient piece 'Waldganger' provide calming counterpoints. Unpredictable and unprecedented throughout, however, this is a treat for those who like their music atmospheric and adventurous in equally generous amounts.

Review: Pauline Oliveros might be the very reason why you're still listening to electronics on cassette in 2018. The American singer, composer and author began to experiment way back in the 1960s and, until her death in 2016, she had not stopped doing so. Belgium's Sub Rosa have decided to put together a little collection of her most daring work between the years 1959-1966 a period when the artist was clearly on an exploratory tip. It's incredible to hear how little others have done to take this even further; Oliveros' style was already futureproof back then, and we hear little else that goes much further than this in terms of freedom and vision. If you're fans of 'ambient' or 'drone' then look no further than this.

Review: Ata Ebtekar's SOTE project has been on our radars since that very first EP for Warp, all the way back in 2002, and then once again with his comeback via Rabih Beaini's Morphine Doser in 2014, with a cracking debut LP. These days, he's struck a partnership with Belgium's excellent Sub Rosa stable, and he returns with the second volume of Persian Electronic Music: Sacred Horror In Design. As you might imagine, this is 100% ethereal business made up of organic instruments and improvisational electronic tweaking, all processed via a warm analogue sound that comes from the heart of the hardware. Much like his recent works, this showcases the Iranian musical culture through a modern, perhaps post-apocalyptic aesthetic that merges the best of the ancient and contemporary worlds, both within Iran, and also of Iran's relationship with the West. A foundational LP that will undoubtedly be a cult classic in the future.

Review: Sote (Ata Ebtekar) is a key part of the new Iranian music vanguard. Embodying a strong conviction that "rules and formulas should be deconstructed and rethought", his music focuses on moving away from typical rhythmic modes in order to establish something much more engaging. With both solo and group live practices, his reputation exceeds him; for electronic music fans with an ear for the transgressive, 'Majestic Noise Made In Beautiful Rotten Iran' recalls everything from Rian Treanor to Ziur to Aho Ssan, building something like a film soundtrack for a new world order we'll never get to see.
