Review: Chantal Acda is known for penning and performing immersive dark folk music, while Eric Theilemans reputation as a master of percussion that focuses on anything but drums (well, OK, some drums) precedes him. Put them both together, then, and chances are you're not going to come up with the latest throwaway chart hit. Instead, we're offered one of those records that needs time to digest, not least if you already know the movie Koyaansqatsi and its original soundtrack.
A New Score was written for a live performance accompanying a screening of that film, but also works incredibly well as a standalone record. Adventurous and deeply human, it invokes images of landscapes that never give up, accentuating our spiritual connection to the planet ('Track 3'), while also managing to experiment with structure and samples, in turn nodding to the machines and electronics involved in its creation ('Track 2', for example).

Review: Available on a limited marbled vinyl version, these two rare pieces by the dearly departed Peter Christopherson and John Balance were commissioned by Sub Rosa for two specific projects: Myths 4 - Sinople Twilight In Catal Huyuk (1989) and Chaos In Expansion from 1993. "Another Brown World" was recorded by Danny Hyde (Psychic TV/Black Light District) at Threshold House, London in the summer of 1989, but the vocals were recorded at the Animist Monastery at the Summit of Mount Popa in Pagan, Burma. Recorded in a storm in London in the summer of 1993, "Baby Food" was the first track to utilize a recording process known as continuation and advancement of the deep listening theories, as demonstrated on Coil's seminal album Love's Secret Domain. released in 1991 and known as 'Sidereal Sound'.

Review: The Belgian modern classical folk band's 12th album is the soundtrack to a series of short, abstract animation films by Rudy Trouve, who also acted as a creative director during the recording process. These took place according to conceptual guide lines set by Trouve. Sometimes the starting point was a play on words or a random chord sequence, sometimes a specific atmosphere, but the playing field was always kept deliberately limited. Hence, the musicians were forced to build a musical structure with minimal means, with the pieces then cut up, sampled, drastically restructured and pasted together again, a method that had been applied earlier on the retrospective album Hineininterpretierung (2017). The result is a work of art that is both visually and musically stunning. The music is often sparse and atmospheric, with a strong emphasis on texture and space, it's hard to categorise but is definitely a unique and captivating album.

Review: Alongside a tandem release on Unrock featuring the track 'Speaking In Tongues' from the same gig, this new release on Sub Rosa from Dwarfs Of East Agouza captures the Egyptian free improv and psych rock explorers playing live at Les Ateliers Claus in Brussels in 2017. It's instructive that A side track 'Baka Of The Future' is also the opening track from their debut album, because it sounds entirely different on this live version and thus neatly captures the creative forces at play from Maurice Loca's keys and drum machines, Sam Shalabi's electric guitar and Alan Bishop's bass. It's a mesmerising trip with shades of Krautrock underneath the scratchy, unpredictable playing on top.

Review: The world is slowly catching up to the pioneering genius of Afro-American composer Julius Eastman. His works confronted the Black experience in a provocative way, as is evident on these renditions of his 'Crazy N*****' and 'Evil N*****' compositions from 1980 and 1979 respectively. On this release via Sub Rosa, the striking, tension-loaded piano pieces were performed by Melanie Dalibert, Nicolas Horvath, Stephane Ginsburg and Wilhelm Latchoumia in 2019 at Festival Musica in Strasbourg. They come pressed onto red vinyl, presented with liner notes from Mary Jane Leach and photography by Donald Burkhardt and Jarek Frankowski.
