Review: In the City of Chi a DJ is only taken seriously when playing his edits, so it doesn't come as a surprise that Stilove4music can tap into a never ebbing fountain and as always delivers more of the prime stuff. The A-side holds a early 80s dance essential from the sharpest trombone player in soul and funk music, who went solo without the godfather on this track. Each time the original gets played the place goes off, therefore the intro has been extended, drums and piano line tease with expectation then BANG! in come those famous horns, twisting, turning and forcing your head to nod profusely. The flip holds another early 80s funk monster stripped down bare naked and raw. Catchy like Anthrax.

Review: Devin Dare (the partnership of Duane Hariott and Sean Marquand) were last spotted collaborating with Funkineven on Apron's special, yellow vinyl Record Store Day edits release. Here, they return to Stilove4music - a label they first graced back in 2012 -with another excellent selection of disco edits. The bumping, whistle-laden disco-funk slammer "Get To It" kicks things off, with the duo making great use of the original's superb, clav-heavy groove. "Bionic" is a little dubbier, feeling like a long lost Idjuts Boys re-edit - all delay-laden breakdowns and screaming disco release. Finally, "Alright" sounds like a scalpel rearrangement of an old Ramsey Lewis record; certainly, it has the same irresistible, piano-heavy jazz swing.

  1. Getloose
  2. Raw Bump
Review: Contrary to the title of the release and Jerome Derradji's Chicago house concerns as the label head of Still Music, this latest offering from the wax impresario is a devoutly technoid affair characterised by one-take thrusts of analogue simplicity. "Getloose" almost lifts of the ground with its upwards tilting hats and energising synth lines, rising and falling in fluid motions but never stopping to let you catch your breath. "Raw Bump" meanwhile has a real bludgeoning quality to the bass-rich synth notes, and the unforgiving thump of an overdriven kick only adds to the feeling of being pinned down by an unshakeable force. Domination never felt so sweet.

Review: Jerome Derradji's vinyl-centric Stilove4music imprint has long been regarded as a must-check imprint, not just for the quality of its disco, boogie and early Chicago house edits, but also for its occasional forays into original deep house productions. This previously Japan-only compilation showcases some of the imprint's highlights to date. The first disc, entirely made-up of Derradji's own edits, is a particular delight, delivering top-notch disco, Italo and boogie reworks (see "NYCom" and the late night swing of "Lay It On Me"). It is, though, topped by disc two, which boasts a mix of white-hot originals from Rick Wilhite, Bruce Ivery, Justus Kohnke and Tricski, plus sought-after edits from BE, Al Kent, Shepp and Professor Genius.

Review: The last time Stilove4music boss Jerome Derradji teamed with Rahaan the resulting 12inch was in stock for all of a hot minute and we expect this record to hang round for a similar amount of time. "NY Com" is spread across the A Side and will please the growing army of DJs currently obsessing over Ron Hardy-esque proto house jams, revelling as it does in a raw late 80s energy characterised by the stuttered vocals, rhythmic stabs and tinny drum rolls. On the flip, the duo concentrates on funkier fare with "Says Alright" extending the classic Philly groove of "Jam Jam Jam" from The Peoples Choice. "Always On My Mind" closes the EP on a high, reworking an obscure female vocal disco cut into prime Horse Meat Disco material. Killer release.

Review: In the five years Still Music's offshoot Stilove4music has been going, it's maintained a level of quality matched by few other labels operating in the edit realm, with some stellar contributions a real variety of producers - Rick Wilhite to Justus Kohncke, Trus'me to Rahaan. Label boss Jerome Derradji has been responsible for some of the finest drops too, and his fourth clutch of Stilove4Music vinyl heat is superb. "Disconnect" brilliantly twists the insides of a disco jam outwards, with Derradji realigning the elements to a constantly bumping house refrain that acid house one moment and delay heavy disco the next. Alongside this, "Whachadoin?" bends a funked out bass guitar riff to breaking point over a rigid drum beat before teasing out the harmonic elements in a manner that will sound great on a large system. On the flip, Derradji lays out some 5am warehouse party is getting deep shit in shape of "Adaptive Control" an original track that cakes the rippling acid groove in all manner of tape dust.

Review: Derradji returns for his first solo endeavour on Stilove4music in some time, bringing the hard boogie flavours with opening track "Lay It On Me", which expertly swerves from the heavy moog pump of the opening movements into killer soul vocal flex with the sort of ease we've come to expect. Complementing this on the A Side is the gritty low slung funk of "Situation" which is dominated by the lead female vocal - some nice bottom end fattening on the groove from Mr Derradji here! On the flip "Bass Is The Place" will be recognisable to anyone blessed with a passing interest in early 80s electro funk whilst "Play On" ends on a sped up multi sample mutant electro boogie p-funk tip!

Review: Some of Chi-towns and Detroit's foremost producers cross their blades and drive each other to top performances in sharply cut edits. 4 party favourites from super influential 70s pop-jazz production wizards, to the definite soul singer who added an "e" to his last name so that his sexual preferences don't get twisted, to an ever fresh early 80s street soul anthem and a ruff Latin shaker - all get tweaked in maximum style for even more floor pressure.

Review: So Rong he's always right, Spun's pedigree for deep funk disco, cosmic grooves and on-point edit crafts, he can cast a Balearic spell at 50 paces - as proved by this Stilove4music debut. A quad of far-reaching floor-minded gems, highlights include the mid '80s proto house chops and breezes of "Make Me Save The Day", the classic breakdance-demanding electro take on "Just Say It", the electro boogie squiggles and wriggles of "Too Cool (LUPO)" and the relentless Italo thunder of "Forever". Each edit tickling a different chapter of the night, Spun has delivered something special yet again.

Review: Recent times have seen Alex Israel excel on releases for WT Records and Creme Organisation so it was little surprise when he was tapped to contribute to In The Dark: Detroit Is Back, last year's excellent compilation from Jerome Derradji's Still Music. Here he adds Derradji's sister label Stilove4Music to his profile with the excellent four-track EP Moving To The Suburbs. Fans of contemporary culture will love the title track which according to the label is an acid ode to "the devastatingly uncreative normcore of American suburbia via the State of Michigan", whilst "Ocelot" continues to showcase Israel's mastery of boxes that make acid. A great 12"!

Review: Given the "Waltered States" title and Al Kent's well-known love of Walter Gibbons, it doesn't take a genius to work out that the re-edits showcased here are of tracks originally remixed by the legendary NYC disco-mixer. Kent handles 12" one, unfurling the groovy, low-slung, bass-driven disco bliss of "Just as Long" before whipping his shirt off and dancing all night to the swirling strings, rubbery bass and driving percussion of "L&O". Over on record two, sometime Misterio duo Devin Dare delivers an occasionally loopy, ten-minute rearrangement of sweet disco shuffler "Play With Me", before delving into the world of Philadelphia soul on the anthem-like "True Ex".

Review: The new Love For Music offering takes us back down memory lane once more: this time not as far as part 1 - which was digging right at the roots of deep house by unearthing and editing some sweet Philly disco - but back to one of the subgenres of early house music: hip house. Virtually a dream combination as in those times house and hip-hop ruled supreme and in peaceful coexistence on every block party, yet soon this music suffered from a flood of weak MCs who couldn't make it in the hip hop world (because in those long-gone times you first and foremost had to have Mic skills to make it big) paired with cheesy Euro-style dance. Naturally those Chicago based music connoisseurs behind Love For Music don't fall for the phoney but lay their hands on one of the few gems right on par with best moments by KC Flight or Jungle Brothers. A spanking, pulsating house beat with unmatched old-school energy plus a bold MC hyping up the crowd in fine style - let the rhythm pump!

Review: Brooklyn duo Bim Marx aka NYC nightlife icon Duane Harriet and Professor Genius make a welcome return to Jerome Deradji's Stilove4Music imprint. "Make It Hot" typifies the Bim Marx sound perfectly, a dirty raw uptempo jam that's heavily edited but retains the soul of the source material. Constantly building across the eight minutes of searing disco energy, the point where some killer string arrangements are teased in before a drop into the heavy percussion breakdown hits hard. Yet more sultry diva disco on the flip with "Funky 2Nite" which keeps the vocals intact but focuses for the main part on the loose groove and figure hugging bassline. The horn heavy funk rock of "Drive It", a cover version of The Beatles "Drive My Car", is picked apart with real expertise, especially the percussion heavy breakdown. The heavy phasing on the closing vocal refrain will delight dancefloors.

Review: Chicago's Ricardo Miranda makes his debut for the ace Stilove4music label, maintaining a fine year in which he has already dropped some serious heat on Rush Hour sub-label Hour House Is Your Rush and his own Noble Square imprint. Title track "102point 7" is all jagged synths, throbbing arpeggios, slashing claps and a rolling acid groove, marking it out as one of his most incendiary productions to date. On the flip "Rotary Cells" is deeper still, a 909-led jacker with undulating layers of sub bass augmented by a wonderfully woozy vocal which extols the virtues of true Chicago House. This is followed by "Greenline", a stripped back jam with scuttling hats and the kind of paranoid synth melody that wouldn't sound out of place in Jeff Mills' Something In The Sky series. This is dark, raw, pulsating dance music - highly recommended.

Review: Chicago legend Rahaan is back on Jerome Derradji's Stilove4music imprint with some decidedly raw and dusty dancefloor tweaks housed in the most minimal of vinyl packaging. Whilst a blank house bag and unlabelled twelve inch is the epitome of no thrills, thankfully Rahaan steps up musically with the A Side dedicated to an extended minimalist version of Lipps Inc's "Funky Town" that's delightfully augmented by some additional "toot toot, beep beeps" from the first lady of disco, Donna Summer. Essentially Rahaan breathes new life into a track that's veering on the overplayed by stripping it of its musical excesses and concentrating on turning the remains into something sweaty and hypnotic. On the flip "Love Bug" pitches down the helium centric disco craziness of Bumblebee Unlimited's song of the same name to something more palatable and rearranges the track to shift the focus onto those glorious strings with the final product something less frenetic. Finally Teddy Pendergrass' already downright funky "If You Know Like I Know" gets embellished with some bottom end rawness.
