Review: Under the Remulak alias, sound engineer and beat-maker Doug Barclay has released a string of instrumental albums that fuse his love of head-nodding hip-hop beats with warm, jazzy instrumentation. "Flourish", his latest album, follows a similar sonic template, peppering dope drum machine beats and hazy, thickset basslines with lilting neo-classical strings, jangling acoustic guitars, drifting vocal samples, twinkling piano motifs and jazzy synth-horns. It feels tailor-made for sunny Spring days and lazy summer afternoons and sits somewhere between the very early work of the Cinematic Orchestra (where main man J Swinscoe was still mixing hip-hop and jazz), and the sumptuous, string-laden hip-hop of DJ Cam.
