Review: The vibrant and diverse music scene in Lisbon has become a hot topic of conversation this year and that's largely thanks to the ongoing efforts of Principe. The Lisbon label has been championing the cause of the city's various music flavours for several years, but 2015 really saw them hit their groove with a succession of superb (and lovingly presented) 12"s. Calor No Frioo by Blacksea Nao Maya is the first of two final Principe releases for the year and sees the trio return to the cause after sharing sides on a 2013 12" with Piquenos DJs Do Guetto. Calor No Frioo features six productions from the BNM trio in various iterations with the swerving groove of "Batidongoo" and the super-fast Batida of "Macobayou" highlights.

Review: It's been a long time since DJ Kolt linked up with his brother DJ Noronha and DJ Peligroso for a Blacksea Nao Maya session - five years to be precise. But the wait has arguably been worth it... Taking their distinctive Lisbon kuduro brew to deeper, darker places, there's a strong theme of trippy timewarping as the trio push, squeeze and cajole us through eight new instrumentals. From the slo-mo tension and ominous weight of opener 'Terror' to the more hopefully, bubbly afrobeat finale 'Africanalidade' by way of stirring mid-point adventures like the woozy, Vangelis-facing 'Horizonte' and the curmudgeonly offbeat kuduro drums of '7even', it's another truly singular set from the Principe collective.

Review: Rising star of Lisbon's Afro-Portuguese scene DJ Firmeza appears again on local imprint Principe and after a great track on Warp Records Cargaa 2 compilation. The title track gets off on a typically off kilter groove that revels in its exoticism. The rest of the tracks are rather short, clocking in at around the three minute mark, but have enough impact in what they portray. "Solmos Melao Doce" is more straight ahead with its four to the floor beat, supporting a haunting harpsichord lead, but soon the intensity of the bongos and muted snare shuffle join forces to support the vocal chants. "Os PDDG" features the scene's other rising star DJ Liofox while "Coelho" is just wicked in its restrained mayhem; those tribal chants and layer upon layer of syncopated wooden drums that stutter out of time, only to lock again; it's wonderfully executed.

Review: DJ Firmeza's 2015 debut, "Alma Do Meu Pai", was a gloriously bass-heavy, multi-cultural melting pot of 21st century dancefloor sounds that perfectly encapsulated the Lisbon scene from which he emerged. This belated sequel is equally as thrilling, with bombastic opener "Avan" setting the tone via heavy, Kuduro-influenced drums, layered tribal percussion hits, clonking melodies and urgent vocals. "Intenso" is if anything even sweatier and more percussively punchy, while "RRRRRR" is a thrusting chunk of wild tribal techno rich in dense drums and voodoo vocal yelps. As for "25", its another off-kilter drum workout just crying out for peak-time plays.

Review: If you're inspired by the unique musical fusions that have emerged from Portugal over the last decade, this tasty triple 7" should be an essential purchase. On platter one, you'll find a quartet of short hits from DJ K30, who excels in combining live, tribal-influenced percussion with bubbly electronic melodies and a fair dose of crackly lo-fi noise. DJ Ninoo handles record two, first delivering the pitched-down tropical beats and yearning chords of "Ambientes Leves", before upping the tempo and reaching for the jangling pianos and high-register synth squiggles of "Saudades Do Russell". On the final 7" you'll find a couple of previously unheard archive cuts from Puto Anderson, with the dense, ultra-percussive closer "Gritos Do Infinito" standing out.

Review: Along with DJ Nigga Fox, DJ Marfox has been the emblem of Principe's rise to fame, the Lisbon label that has been causing a stir in the house and techno world thanks to its new and quirky take on the genres. More than anything, it has been the injection of African rhythms and all-round craziness that has earned these rhythms such fame, and thankfully this test EP by Marfox is just as bold and curious as the rest. "2685" is a flute-driven monster that has more in common with a tribal dance than a techno cut, and the same goes for the ear-shattering bullet percussion chops of "Unsound". "Tarraxo Everyday" slows the momentum down to a steady pace, "Kassumbula" oils the machines back up and gets the motors going for the heavy pounding that features on "Cobra Preta", while "B 18" takes us down the final hurdle, a broken groove with plenty of tribal fury and Marfox's inimitable pace. Unmissable.

Review: A leading figure in Principe's unique melting pot kuduro, Nigga Fox throws down every shade of rave you can imagine; a dizzying African zouk is switched into a raw, toxic tribal bounce affair, "Apocalipsiii" is reminiscent of the time UK funky and bleep techno got mixed up in the wash and came out dark black while "Tio Kiala" is straight out of a London squat rave that's somehow been teleported to Sao Paulo. Finally "De Leve" leaves this mortal coil and finds solace amongst the Moomins to the beat of a sweeping slo-mo marching band drum. Matchless.

Review: Principe founding member and all round Portuguese beat don, Nigga Fox doesn't release prolifically. We're lucky if we get a release a year. But when he does drop something, it's always worth paying attention. Especially when it comes in the form of a debut album. His most comprehensive body of work to date, here the Warp-affiliate really digs deep into ingredients, joins more dots than ever and pulls out everything he has hidden up his sleeve. Take the Afrofunk voodoo brew of "Talanzece" or the strange woozy off-beat house jitters of "Subzero" or the staccato jilts and swing of "Pao De Cada Dia" for just a handful of examples of creativity and innovation on show here. One of the most unique and beguiling albums we've heard all year.

Review: Issued digitally earlier this year, Lisbon's Principe do the right thing and grant Danger by the supremely talented Nidia Minaj the vinyl release it truly deserves. The Bordeaux-based Kuduro kid has delivered a document that's near-album level in its weight, content and creative consistency. Ranging from the dissonant drums and uncompromised groove of "Mambos Fudiz" to the cosmic techno of "Estudio Da Mana Na Casa" (imagine if UR came from Dakar instead of Detroit) by way of spasmodic synths and groove switches of "Puto Luri" and the head-melting time switches and industrial strength hoovers of "Limite", Nidia conjures a sound and technique that belies her teenage years. Genuinely unique.

Review: Fresh off impressing with the fine double drop on Charles Drakeford's emergent From The Depths label, Portuguese trio Niagara land back on home turf with an excellent new 12" for Lisbon crew Principe. Formed of Sara Eckerson and brotherly pair Antonio and Alberto Arruda, the Loures-based Niagara bring a sense of organic unpredictability to Principe, with almost every element of the music on impar performed live. There's a great diversity to their sound too, with the rush inducing house vibrancy of opener "Arruda" complemented by the low slung "Abacaxi Limao" which is essentially an Iberian take on Weatherall-style dub disco. On the flip "Legume" wouldn't sound out of place in a Mood Hut DJ set, whilst "Cheetah" impresses thanks to the deep sub bass, glistening keys and bristling hi hats. A superb 12".

Review: Niagara has always been an intriguing proposition. The trio's music is often brilliant, but frequently thrillingly difficult to pigeonhole. They're at it again on "Apologia", a debut album that's as trippy and otherworldly as it is beautiful, inventive and intoxicating. Over the course of the set's nine tracks, you can expect to hear oddball samples, bright tropical melodies, "Blade Runner"-influenced synthesizer work, sticky Portuguese rhythms, ambient electronics, glitchy electronics, lo-fi drum machine hits, rainforest-ready songs, bustling hand percussion and horizontal aural humidity. In other words, it's a brilliant musical melting pot the likes of which you've never heard before.

More direct, firm and club-focused than her last release, each of these batida bruisers hits with a jagged, raw funk. "Chef" cooks up the drama with clipped laser sounds and trappy elements around the percussive rhythm, "Hard" is all about the synth brass and carnival energy, "Jam" hits with a trance twist while the finale "Nunun" closes on the tense hypnotic signature she's really made a name for herself with... Just wait for that euphoric breakdown and feel the release. Crucial.

Review: With releases throughout 2015 from DJ Firmeza and DJ Nigga Fox, Nidia Minaj, and CDM covering Afro-Portuguese styles like kuduro, batida, and funana as well as the improvised house antics of Niagara, Principe has arguably had their most impressive year to date. The Lisbon label end it on a high with Transmutacao Cerebral, an album by Normal Nada, the latest production alias of an "elusive underground metakuduro legend" formerly known as Qraqmaster CiclOFF and Erre Mente. The seven tracks demonstrate just how vital the music scene in Lisbon is right now, with a quite dizzying array of styles covered over the course of this album. Witness the contrast between the scuffed bliss of "Nubai (Wo Lo Lol)" and the suite of "Kakarak" productions which could easily slip into a techno set.

Review: Raised in Lisbon by Angolan parents but now residing in Manchester, P Adrix is not your average maker of bass music. Take a listen to this debut album and you'll find a breathless range of African, European and British influences brilliantly melded into intoxicating new shapes. Most of the tracks could be considered Kudoro, though his take on the style - peppered with grime-style eight-bit melodies, traditional Angolan percussion, chopped-up samples and the big, ballsy sub-bass of British dubstep - is not like any Kuduro record you will have heard before. As a result, Album Desconhecido is that rarest of beasts: a full-length release that's as exciting and entertaining as it is revolutionary.

Review: Portuguese label Principe is fully dedicated to releasing 100% real contemporary dance music coming out of Lisbon, its suburbs, projects and slums. New sounds, forms and structures with their own set of poetics and cultural identity. Rinchoa Stress began in 2014 as a group of close friends, even before they started producing. In under two years, they have made a name for themselves with tight, across the board grooves, working melody and metal beats with equal proficiency. Members Narciso and Nuno layed down all compositions here, teaming up as the core producers of RS, growing up post DJs Di Guetto (circa 2006) and into the crew's now regular gigs at Principe's monthly residency at Musicbox in Lisbon.

Review: Over the last couple of years, Lisbon label Principe has done a terrific job in showcasing the hard-to-pigeonhole fusion sounds of the city's Afro-Portuguese dance scene. Mambos Levis D'Outro Mundo, the stylish imprint's first compilation, does a terrific job in emphasizing their anything-goes, globally-mind style. Containing cuts from rising stars such as Niagara and DJ Nigga Fox, as well as a swathe of hot tracks from lesser-known lights of the Lisbon scene, the compilation's 23-tracks giddily meld throbbing sub-bass and dense, Afro-influenced rhythms, with bubblinbg electronics, humid vocal chants, and all manner of American and British influences. As a result, it hits home hard, delivering the kind of electric, thrill-a-minute dance music that's devilishly difficult to pin down.
