Notes: PreSonus' popular Class A XMAX preamps are widely lauded for their clarity and transparency. The tube preamps are beloved for their warm, smooth sound. With the Blue Tube DP V2 dual-path mic/instrument preamp, you get both types of high quality sound in one unit.

Now PreSonus have improved on the classic unit with the BlueTube DP V2. The solid-state path now feeds PreSonus' top-of-the-line Class A XMAX mic preamplifier with 80dB of variable gainian upgrade from the original BlueTube DP's solid-state stage.

The tube path features a 12AX7 tube that operates on voltages double that of other preamplifiers in its class, producing lots of headroom and big tone. PreSonus have done an assortment of other tweaks as well. The result: the BlueTube DP V2 offers lower noise, more high-end clarity, and an even smoother tube sound than its predecessor.

With Central Station, you can easily switch between three sets of stereo, analog input sources. Two stereo S/PDIF digital sources connect via one coax and one Toslink optical port. The two smaller woofers work in parallel to partially contain the dispersion of the tweeter, minimizing phase displacement. The result is incredibly detailed stereo imaging.

Both the E44 and the E66 feature two midrange drivers that cover the same frequency range. The Eris provides 3-EQ controls in its Acoustic Tuning section: high, mid and low cutoff. These controls enable you to fine-tune the monitors to your space. The low control also is useful when using the E8 with a subwoofer.

The high control is a shelving filter that boosts or cuts all frequencies above 4.5 kHz by as much as 6dB. The mid control is a mid-frequency peak filter that boosts or cuts frequencies centered at 1 kHz and extending about one octave above and below that frequency. The low cutoff control rolls off frequencies below either 80 or 100Hz at a slope of 12dB/octave. This control is especially useful if you also have a connected subwoofer.

A 3-position acoustic space switch controls a second-order, low shelving filter that cuts frequencies below 800Hz by either 2 or 4dB to compensate for the boundary bass boost that occurs in close proximity to walls or corners.

RF shielding protects against radio frequencies that could be introduced to the signal and become audible. The Eris monitors also provide overheat protection, current-output limiting and subsonic protection. Soft startup amplifiers prevent damaging pops from sounding through the speakers when you power them up.

Notes: "Turn my headphones up!" "More me, I can't hear myself!" "Turn down that click!" It gets old. Change that tune with the HP60 headphone distribution system. The HP60 is more than just a half-dozen headphone amps, it's a field-tested solution to a host of common headphone-monitoring problems.

Let's start with "turn my headphones up." Each of the HP60's six headphone amps has its own level control and puts out 150 mW, which is loud enough to drive the alligators out of the Louisiana swamps. If they can't hear this headphone system, they're stone deaf.

More likely they'll scream, "turn it down, you're killing me!" Problem solved.

Now let's solve "turn down that click." The HP60 features two sets of line-level, stereo inputs that are routed to all six headphones; a Mix control that sets their relative levels for each headphone output. So you can feed the main control-room mix to channel A and the click to channel B and use the Mix controls to individually raise or lower the click relative to the main mix for each musician. Problem solved.

As for "more me," in addition to the two pairs of main stereo inputs, you get an external stereo input pair with level control for each headphone channel. A Mono switch lets you sum the left and right inputs. Additionally, a mute switch is provided for each headphone output.

So you can send each person a feed of just their instrument or voice and can control the level separately for each. Problem solved.

With the HP60, when you talk, everyone listens. Hit the Talk button and use the talkback-mic input and your favorite dynamic mic to tell 'em what to do. You can even use a footswitch to control the talkback hands-free.

Notes: One of Presonus' newest signal processors, the versatile Studio Channel provides tube preamplification, dynamics processing, and EQ and takes the channel-strip concept in a bit different direction than does its older sibling, the Eureka.

The Studio Channel's Class A tube preamplifier is based on the original BlueTube DP preamp and features a high-output 12AX7 tube that operates on voltages double that of other preamplifiers in its class. The result is lots of headroom and big tone. Gain and Tube Drive controls enable a wide range of sounds, from transparent and clear to edgy and overdriven.

Presonus' VCA-based compressor is known for musicality and fast attack, with the ability to tame the fastest transients. From slap bass, to snare drum, to vocals, the Studio Channel's compressor allows you to record blazing-hot signals with total dynamics control. Its convenient Auto Attack/Release feature provides preset attack and release curves. The backlit VU meter can display gain reduction or output gain.

The custom-designed amplifiers in the Studio Channel's three-band EQ deliver sweet-sounding gain and cut for smooth highs; deep, solid lows; and clear midrange. The midrange band is fully parametric, with variable Q. The high- and low-frequency bands have Frequency and Gain controls, but fixed Q, and can be either shelving or peak bands. The EQ can be pre- or post-compressor, and you can bypass each stage independently.

With both XLR and 1/4" line outputs, you can connect the Studio Channel to almost any recording interface, amp, or P.A. system.
