Review: Shape-shifting post-punk quasi-legends Bourbonese Qualk are finally getting a bit of the shine they so richly deserve after years in obscurity, not least thanks to the retrospective compilation on Mannequin back in 2015. Now Platform 23 are reissuing their classic album "Laughing Afternoon", originally released back in 1983 and having lost none of its impact. It's a slippery, shape-shifting creation that veers between uneasy soundscapes and gutter-dwelling funk, with some truly visionary signal processing, electronic textures and more besides in the mix. It's a crime this crew aren't held in the same regard as their other early 80s post-industrial peers, but at least the wrongs are being righted now.

Review: The bountiful back catalogue of Bourbonese Qualk continues to yield more delights for the industrially-enlightened in these neo-noirish times. This time around Platform 23 have chosen to travel back to 1986 and the especially fraught sound of Preparing For Power. You can hear the anti-authoritarian strain in tracks like 'Confrontation' and 'Lies', but the more remarkable moments are the deviations such as the downcast but quite beautiful folk ruminations of 'Soft City' and the incisive poetry of Craig Runyon on 'Boggy Creek' and 'Xenophobia'. The latter is a perfect slice of disjointed post-punk funk that sounds like it could shatter at any given moment, like the best music of the era.

Review: The reissue material from the archives of Bourbonese Qualk keep on coming, with this second salvo from the sturdy partnership of Mannequin and Platform 23. The visionary London industrial agitators were on vital form on "Hope", which came out midway through 1984, and now Rude 66 has remastered the music for fresh ears. The mood is persistently murky, but it moves from danceable anti-funk to gutter-dwelling noise baths and atmospheric sonic totems. At once mystical and incisive, otherworldly and grittily real, this is another brilliant reframing of one of the UK's true industrial titans.

Review: The new Platform 23 release speaks to the fun and freaky side of vintage industrial - all Fairlight CMI slap bass funk and madcap sampling that nods to Tackhead amongst other reference points. It's no surprise to learn Chel White was producing this music between 1985 and 1991, although it's impressive considering he was primarily busy as a visual artist. Behind the zany sound palette there are some serious chops too - a distinct flavour that's all his own which reflects the early days of sample culture opening up the language of electronic music production in immeasurable ways.

Review: Concept City was a low-key release in 1985 that surfaced on Cordelia Records, an underground favourite for lovers of esoteric ruminations from bedroom producers tinkering with technology. That makes it no surprise this reissue of work from Mr Concept appears on Platform 23, the perfect home for such charming collages of sound recorded on lo-fi four track. The mood veers from track to track on "November" but there's a generous nod to The Durutti Column in the lingering guitar refrains that appear on many tracks. The scratchy, stuttering samples take on a hypnotic quality in their manic triggering, all caked together on tape and now lovingly repressed for fresh, inquisitive ears.

Review: It Was is an appropriately-named album if ever we saw or heard one. Colin Potter was an enigmatic and hugely influential member of the 1980s cassette underground, and while much work came before what's presented here, the contents of this record represent close to the apex of his creative output - carefully chosen selections from the 1989 tapes Recent Histories Volumes 1 & 2.

It had taken seven years to return to the release schedule, and the gap between these tracks and the early-1980s output on ICR clearly paid off. Deftly combining sequencers, guitars, percussive accents, reversed synths and more, this is everything Potter fans fell in love with him for and then so much more besides. Definitely one of the best ways to get acquainted, or find your old obsessions reignited.

Vox Populi & Man - "Megamix" (2:17)
Review: There's an awful lot going on here, and as such plenty to talk about. Alternative Funk: Volume 1 is both a compilation and reissue, with the original outing landing on cassette in the early-1980s on VP231, a label set up by Pacific 231, AKA Pierre Jolivet. The albums were the brainchild of Axel Kyrou and Francis Man, founders of the legendary Vox Populi!, and their aim was to showcase far out sounds, at least som of which were their own.

What we have in the modern iteration is a snapshot of that expansive and often hallucinatory aural odyssey, with seminal and lesser known artists resting side-by-side on the track list. Stylistically broad, running the gamut from dub percussion to cold wave and industrial, it's yet more evidence of just how fertile a decade the 80s were.

Chukk Green - "Shoes For Freedom" (1:21)
Review: Weird, enigmatic, and unarguably wonderful would be three ways to describe the names that have been brought together on this reissue of part of a compilation series that first landed on cassette via the VP231 imprint as the 1980s got into gear. A collector's item in the truest sense, Alternative Funk Vol.2 is a strange yet recognisable beast, with so much here being almost familiar but alien at the same time.

Over the course of the track list, then, you'll find proto-e-funk (Dee Nasty's 'Orientic Groove'), block party electro hip hop ('Asphalt Zombie' by Scoop!), broken, guitar-lick-heavy funk that's almost definitely been sampled for pop and house mash ups, only set to the vocals of a militant German sex droid ('Der Sound Kosten' by Melsjest), and spoken word poetry worthy of Hunter S. Thompson layered over driving breaks (Randall Kenney's 'Norma Jones'), alongside a host of even trippier, experimental and abstract stuff.

Review: Platform 23 reunites once more with Vox Man Records to dig deep into their archives and shine a new light on. In the past they have done some mega well loved Alternative Funk compilations which got the label off to a fine start and now they dig into an array of cult cassette releases to bring us treasure from Audiologie N-4 - The Independant Psychedelic Trip and Audiologie 5 et 6 - Ethniques Urbaines. This is music from the avant-garde and post punk scenes that draws on wave, spoken word, dark dub and industrial for its eerie yet alluring charms, all with a real edge. Ethnic, idiosyncratic and psyched out, this is another great overview.

Review: REPRESS ALERT: New label Platform 23 lands with a bang, delving into the mysterious world of 1980s cassette culture and in particular the Vox Man label run by French outfit Vox Populi, Axel Kyrou and Francis Man. This Alternative Funk: Vol 1 collection cherry picks from the various installments of Alternative Funk that Vox Man released in the mid 80s, presenting some vaguely familiar names and a whole lot of unknowns that fuelled a DIY scene brimming with creativity and lo-fi brilliance. On this first installment, get down to weirdo boogie of From Raushenberg, wig out to the psychedelic synth music of Scoop! and throw down to the drum-tastic madness of Fist of Facts. It's all old, and yet it feels so new.

Review: REPRESS ALERT: The Alternative Funk series was a hidden weapon for obsessive collectors of 80s obscurities across the spectrum of new wave, minimal wave and other such cult movements in this most creative of eras. With Platform 23 having just dropped the first volume of reissued material from this deep cover collection, they're right back on the case with another 15 oddball gems for your delectation. Dee Nasty's "Orientic Groove" is as exotic and funky as it sounds, while 3M create a kind of nightmarish collage of noise, found sound, percussive lurch and a positively unhinged brass section. That gives you just some idea of the scope you can expect to enjoy on this welcome reissue.

Review: Billing themselves as an ethno-industrial outfit, French group Vox Populi! have more in common with the German kosmische movement than the sound of their own fair land. They came from serious stock, including Axel Kyrou's mother who was a musique concrete pioneer at GRM, which set them up to make a bold and challenging debut album Myscitismes, originally released on their own Vox Man label in 1985. Combining advanced studio manipulation and liberal FX treatments with a pastoral folk thrum, motorik synth work and a heavy dose of pan-continental mysticism, they created a stunning and forward-thinking work that sounds shockingly relevant in the here and now. Finally reissued after more than 30 years, now is the perfect chance to grab this trailblazing slice of sonic sorcery.

Review: So-called 'ethno-industrialists' and Paris-based outliers Vox Populi are next in the spotlight for Platform 23 Records as it continues on its mission to unearth archival treasures both known and unknown. Half Dead Ganga Music is widely thought to be one of the group's most cohesive records as it meanders through lo-fi drones, muggy ambient and voodoo ritualism. Founder Axel Kyrou and partner Mythra who provides the ghostly vocals cook up alluring yet oddball sounds with obscured bass, rich layers of tape processing and weirdly uplifting gloominess. A superb album that sounds as new and innovative now as it did when it was first released all those decades ago.
