Review: Since releasing his fine debut album Offseason Traveller in 2013, Aera releases have been sporadic at best. Although there have been odd singles here and there (including a brilliant 2017 out on Hivern Discs), fans have been made to wait for this long-promised sophomore set. Aera (AKA Aleph Music founder Ralf Schmidt) claims it's his most personal and coherent work yet, and we tend to agree. Largely unconcerned with making people dance, the album offers up a melodious, far-sighted and largely ear-pleasing blend of ambient, electronica and IDM cuts variously inspired by new age, kosmiche and krautrock. Of course, there are hints of the producer's usual left-of-centre take on house and techno throughout, but it's the uncluttered beauty of the album's more downtempo tracks that makes the biggest impression.

This is a true electro samba classic from 1982, originally released on Les Disques De Crepuscule, two tracks were produced by John Foxx (Ultravoxx). The string arrangements of "Les Demoiselles De Rochefort" have been arranged by Tuxedomoon's Blaine L Reininger. Several tracks on the album have also been classics in the now re-discovered Cosmic Disco scene in Italy where DJs like Daniele Baldelli created a new definition of disco in the early 1980s.

  2. Steve Yanko - "Prostitute Pink"
Review: "The Boy/Prostitute Pink" is the first double a-side 12" single from Toronto based producer and DJ Steve Yanko. "The Boy" is a collaboration with Isabelle Antena based on Antena's classic hit "The Boy From Ipanema". It is a killer dub-house track in an Idjut Boys/Chicken Lips style. "Prostitute Pink" is a sure shot disco tune. Born and bred in Toronto, Canada, Steve Yanko cut his teeth in the then small but growing local DJ scene. While initially making tracks on an ASR10 sampler, his obsession with live disco and recording grew to a current state of equipment madness.

Review: Considered the anti-hero of disco music, Argoman literally means 'lazy man', however it's also a combination of three Italian producer's names who started the project about one year ago. Any guesses who they might be? We will leave that to you! The track "Chimicalissimo" is new wave Italo disco at its finest, featuring peak-time dancefloor energy completely produced with analogue synths and drum machines. Gerd Jason and Fabrizio Mammarella team up again as Black Spuma and their remix turns the track into a slow burning disco monster. The dub version gives more space to a melancholic piano melody that culminates through analogue arpeggios to an unstoppable build.

  1. Hey Don't Make Trouble

  3. Hey Don't Make Trouble (Esa Afro Acid remix)
Review: Huntleys & Palmers and Highlife resident Auntie Flo has long been at the forefront of the Afro-electronic movement (alongside German specialists Africaine 808), delivering intoxicating blends of original African music and modern drum machine rhythms. Here, he makes his first appearance on Permanent Vacation with the feverish "Hey Don't Make Trouble" - a sweaty blend of wonky electronics, shimmering synths, African chanting and dense, floor-filling African percussion. The kuduro-influenced "Woman of Your Boss" takes a slightly different approach, mixing rave-era breakbeats and skittish bursts of percussion with wonkly synth horns and chopped-up African vocal samples. An essential EP is completed by the Esa Afro Acid Remix of the title track, a thrilling trip into ragged 303 territory in the company of some long-lost African tribe. Recommended.

Review: Permanent Vacation drop round two of the Reckless remixes on us with a certified legend dominating proceedings. Step forward the hulking frame of DJ Sneak who delivers two versions, with the Stereo Gangstaz remix a nicely paced effort that's full of disco burn and displays the Puerto Rican's panache for looping vocals. The dub version is more typical Sneak fare, heavy on the layers of percussion, looped up samples and full of energy. Elsewhere Permanent Vacation's in house production team of Tom Bioly and Benjamin Frohlich indulge in some vintage piano house bliss whilst Manuel Tur delivers an atmospheric acid slow burner.

  2. Reckless With Your Love (Goodguy Mikesh & Filburt remix)
  3. Reckless With Your Love (Tuff City Kids remix)
  4. Reckless With Your Love (Midnight Magic remix)
Review: The clamour and hype surrounding Tensnake's remix of Azari & III's "Reckless With Your Love" has surpassed the inner disco circle and spread as far and wide as Pitchfork and The Metro. No real surprise as both the remixer and remixee are certainly Premier League material. The liberal usage of C & C Music Factory splits audiences once the signature piano stabs are dropped in, but this remix alone is likely to secure Permanent Vacation one of their best selling 12 inches to date. But yet, it's not even the best remix on this record. That honour falls to Midnight Magic, who have already won many a heart via their debut single "Beam Me Up". Employing a similar sound to that track, Midnight Magic's remix has a vintage disco bump that submerged in cavernous echo, with the soaring string and horn arrangements laced over the chorus a true delight. Tuff City Kids aka Gerd Jansen and Phillip Lauer (Arto Mwambe/Brontosaurus) dispel with the vocal refrain and opt for some prime Muzic Box jack which brilliantly teases out an acid tinged variant on the original's distinctive synth melody. The less than prolific German duo of Good Guy Mikesh & Filburt return from the wilderness with a brilliant burning deep house rework which rounds off a superlative remix package.

Tomorrow We Start A New Life Again
  1. Tomorrow We Start A New Life Again
  2. If Not Tomorrow Maybe Someday
Review: Experienced German producers Daniel Bortz and Sascha Sibler go way back; they released their first collaborative 12" on Tiefschwarz's Souvenir imprint in 2011. They seem to enjoy working together, as their recent EP on Innervisions was one of the best things Dixon's label has put out for some time. "Tomorrow We Start A New Life Again" is another belter, with hissing, Latin-influenced percussion providing sturdy backdrop for a series of sparkling synthesizer motifs, melancholic chords and atmospheric electronic touches. It feels simultaneously hopeful and fearful, which is how most people feel when they start a new life. The flipside, "If Not Tomorrow Then Maybe Someday" is, understandably, a little deeper, with a noticeably bittersweet feel about the undulating electronics and fluid arrangement.

Review: There's much to admire about Bostro Pesopeo. The production alias of German producer Florian Peter, the name Bostro Pesopeo sounds like an ancient Roman politician and he makes some of the most under rated music on the Permanent Vacation roster. He apparently also makes the finest pizza in all of Munich. Cheer Up sees Pesopeo make one of his infrequent returns to the Perm Vac and challenges the Pional featuring Yes as the Juno review team's personal favourites in the Bostro canon of works. As with previous releases from Pesopeo, there's a real richness to his productions here and a diversity in style across the three tracks with "The Supreme Court" a notable delight of cloudy analogue textures and brisk house drums.

Review: Munich label Permanent Vacation continue their fine run of form, pairing a label stalwart with a relative newcomer with excellent results. Bostro Pesopeo has featured on many a Permanent Vacation release since his debut back in 2008, whilst Pional may have only recently joined the PV canon, though his work presents a further strengthening in the bond between the label and Hivern Discs. Yes is notable for two things; the multi-faceted approach to the music and Pional's hitherto unrecorded singing voice (soon to be heard on John Talabot's album for Permanent Vacation). Along with the swinging, twilight 2-step future boogie of the title track, the duo veer through 80s tinged new wave and more familiar kraut indebted house music (the excellent "Baby Blue"), and what really impresses is the attention to detail and organic feel across each track.

Review: La Pregunta sees Chateau Flight in effervescent form on their first deliverance of 2013, and represents a fine debut for Munich's Permanent Vacation, who've thundered through the year so far, releasing Mano Le Tough's debut album, a retrospective of Frankfurt label Brontosaurus and a clutch of other EPs from John Talabot, Disco Doubles and Woolfy vs Projections. Two variations of "La Pregunta" appear on the EP, with the main mix reminiscent of a slightly livelier version of Jerome Sydenham & Kerri Chandler's collaborative productions, while the "Beau Dub mix" substitutes high-flying synths for dubbier house and techno elements, laced with Caribbean riddims and King Tubby-style delay.

Review: Christian Schafer made his name a few years back via a swathe of releases on the admirable Comeme label that offered a distinctively off-kilter - if still formidably club-ready - take on house music. He's at it again on "Tannin", his debut for Munich's Permanent Vacation label. Schafer sets the tone via the cymbal-heavy machine percussion and warped acid bass of "Tannin", before joining forces with Sano on bongo-laden analogue deep house workout "Ritmo". "Passant" is a deliciously hypnotic and trance inducing voyage through locked-in drums and echoing waves of synthesizer sounds, while the Kolkut ELbay edit of "Dancer" is deep, trippy and wonderfully positive. Closing the EP is the original version of that track, a looser and slightly sleazier affair made in cahoots with old pal Matthias Agauyo.

Review: Newly transplanted to Australia, Greenskeeper don James Curd demonstrates he's lost none of his knack for crafting deliciously danceable electro funk grooves with his latest offering on Permanent Vacation. "Open Up Your Mind" is the first of hopefully many collaborations with vocalist Devin Byrnes, whose spoken word delivery is the perfect foil for a vertical glam house throb from Curd. There's a tongue in cheek menace to the darkly lysergic melodies that you'd expect from Curd, but it's matched by an inherent infectiousness. This is probably his best work since the ubiquitous DFA single a few years ago, and there's even an instro version for those who prefer their house music sans chatter.

As she grew up, she was inspired to write and sing herself and has been doing so since 1993, working with many different writers, musicians and producers within many genres. In the past 2 years Kathy concentrated on writing a collection of songs in preparation for a solo career. The second album teaser "Over" (produced by Maurice Fulton) is about to see the light of day. It's a real burner.

  1. Demons (Darshan Jesrani Spit - Roast mix)
  2. Demons (Darshan Jesrani Spit - Roast dub)
Review: When it comes to disco reversions, remixers don't come much bigger than Metro Area's Darshan Jesrani. Here we find him slicing up intriguing new synth pop act Disco Double. The main mix rolls with a delightfully playful analogue bassline that complements every second the falsetto vocals. For something a little deeper head for the spit-roast dub where the drums are stripped back to a more tribal flavour and the synths are dubbed out to perfection. Release your "Demons" within today!

  4. Taking Your Own Advice
Review: If you multiplied the slices of toast you've consumed your entire life by a hundred it might come close to the vast array of aliases undertaken by ED DMX in a career that spans over fifteen years and releases on imprints as disparate as Rephlex, Turbo and Soul Jazz. A relationship with Permanent Vacation which began with the German label reissuing Ed DMX's "Come To Me" back in 09 is further cemented with these four tracks of original material from the producer. The title track is here in two forms, both of which have a decidedly Cold Wave feel (an aesthetic that is clearly echoed on the cover art) and sees Ed's own distinct tones punctuated by a heavy synth backing sat atop punchy drums. It's a really strong look and you could easily mistake the Dance Mix for something from the early 80s. Complementing this on the B Side are two instrumental disco boogie jams heavy on the analogue arpeggio hits with "Disco Theme" impressing in particular. Twelve inches of neatness from the Permanent Vacation camp.

Review: ** REPRESS ALERT ** Timeless electro by UK stalwart Edward Upton, on this much deserved reissue of his 1998 LP Nu Romantix. Permanent Vacation have made the album available for the first time on a loud and sharp double 12" that has been carefully remastered by Lopazz for maximum pleasure. All the tracks you know and love from the orginal are here, such as his spooky Dopplereffekt tribute "You're Not There" featuring his terrific deadpan vocal delivery, the wonderfully creepy "Mouse" with its minimalist vibe and the cheeky vocoder antics of "End Of The Night" channelling some good ol' fashioned Italo vibes. Including the instrumental of "Come To Me" as a bonus track.
