  4. Growing Pains (Unbroken dub remix)
Review: A new twelve inch crafted in the Toronto studio of Stuart Li is always going to be welcome at the Juno offices, however there is added intrigue in the Northern Heights EP, his debut release for the Other Heights imprint as it also features the inaugural remix efforts of Unbroken Dub. Both original tracks are refined examples of Basic Soul Unit's trade with lead track "Come On" driven by typically raw and off kilter programming and sounds. "Growing Pains" weaves its way intoxicatingly from the delicate beginnings of soft analogue touches over rough bass hewn stop-start rhythms into something much more intricate before starting again midway through. Remix wise, the young Siberian excels in retaining key elements of both tracks but flushing the arrangements with his own signature frosted and dubby sounds.

  3. Brooks Mosher - "Lost Signal"
  4. Metrobox - "Monetics"
Review: For part two of a three-part various artists series, impressive Belgium label Other Heights lures Markus Suckut away from his prolific remixing of 2012 with a fresh cut "2QMT59", a drum focused piece of stripped back techno. The A-side is shared with Tom Dicicco, a name continually increasing in recognition by the release. He supplies "Planet Router", straying away from the three dimensional bass-sonics he is known for, opting for subtle kicks and cosmic synths instead. Brooks Mosher returns to Other Heights after two releases of Steffi's Dolly imprint with his deep grooving "Lost Signal", while the Belgium connection Metrobox marries short ravey stabs with blue note piano keys and Rhodes in "Monetics".

  1. Gaust - "Vacant Depth" (intro)
  2. Pehr Genlogue - "Decadent City"
  3. Kretipleti - "Freadsinit"
  4. Unbalance - "Wandering Soul"
Review: Jorn Kerschot's label has come along way from its humble beginnings as a small dub techno inspired label from Belgium. What hasn't changed is Kerschot's penchant for unearthing new and unknown talent. The only recognisable name to appear on the first of three various artists EPs, a lambasting opener to Other Heights 2013, is Unbalanced. The Russian extends his continual long run of form with "Wandering Soul", a melodious dub techno second coming of Hawtin's seminal "Spastik". Gaust, another unearthed newbie from Kerschot, debuts with "Vacant Depth" and its distant steel panned drums are used as the series' "Intro". Pehr Genlogue goes deep and head downs techno for his debut vinyl production "Decadent City" as do Kretipleti on "Freadsinit", only the duo lift their track out of the darkness and into the shadows with chiming bells and luminous synths.

Review: Belgian artist Jens Vydt seems to have a strong creative bond with Other Heights, the label run by his compatriot Jorn Kerschot, with several Herstlaub albums released jointly with the artist's own federleicht label over the years, and this Hauch 12" sees that relationship continue. For Vydt completists, this record offers the chance to grip some of his finest work on vinyl for the first time with three of the four tracks previously issued only as part of his CDr album. The A Side is taken over by "Auf einen Stern zugehen, nur dieses," a ten minute minimalist highlight of the 2011 Herstlaub album Per Sonare, whilst the B Side picks out two tracks from last year's Our Love Was Only Half Forgotten with "Plenilune" particularly captivating. A new production in the wonderfully restrained "MJ Lermontov" offers a hint of further Herstlaub material promised on Other Heights this year.

  2. VVV - "Burrowing"
  3. Ozka - "KMZ"
  4. Myztical - "Summer '91"
Review: Other Heights round out their decorated entry into 2013 with the last of three various artist EPs. Like EP I / III, which raised its curtain with the debut of Gaust, EP III / III sees newcomer J.Tijn open in frenetic and acidic style with "Three 0 Freedom", while Texan dubstep producer VVV's stomping "Burrowing" shares many similarities with Ghostek's "Cryon" from Other Heights seventh release Leaving For The City Of Saints. On the flip, Ozka returns to the label after a split EP in 2011 with Jakob Altmann, and he supplies the loopy and bass-centric "KMZ". Another prize picking from label owner Kerschot is the inclusion of Myztical's rough and dusty house jam "Summer '91" - a name to look out for if his Analogue Experiences EP on upstart Nicz Records is anything to go by.
