Review: Steve Bug has racked up a dizzying number of releases over the last quarter of a century, but the Poker Flat and Dessous founder shows no sign of slowing down. "Different In Detroit" might be his first solo single of the year, but follows well regarded collaborations with regular studio buddies Langenberg and Cle. Bug's original version is wonderfully deep and hypnotic; a hazy late night affair where spacey, delay-laden synth riffs and choice vocal samples wrap themselves around a locked-in rhythm track. The flipside boasts two alternative interpretations: a looser and more bass-heavy take by Rhauder that veers closers to typical European tech-house territory, and an impeccably deep, dub techno influenced "DubHouse" revision by Marko Furstenberg that drags Bug's original further towards the outer reaches of the cosmos.

Review: The bond between Sascha Dive and fellow German operation Ornaments Music dates back to 2008 when the Deep Vibes boss put out the Deepest America 12". His love for the original US deep house sound remains unabated on this new 12" for Ornaments, Tribute, with the title track notable for some deft sampling of cult Detroit DJ The Electrifying Mojo. Around his legendary tones, Dive crafts a bone shaking house groove with chords positively dripping with emotion. Bust out the B side and Underground Quality's Jus Ed lays down a killer phased out Deep Sleep remix of the track whilst Dive adds his own filter heavy Disco version. A fine 12".

Review: It's been three years since Joseph Longo III - AKA veteran New York deep house hero Pal Joey - popped up on Ornaments under the French Touch alias. Like its predecessor, this sequel is an expansive and varied affair, with a number of Longo's friends and associates lending a hand throughout. The more up-tempo moments reside on the A-side, with the hypnotic deep house shuffle of "Come On (Fredo Remix)" and rap-sampling jazz-house deepness of "Breakin' Necks (Papastomp Mix)" both standing out. Much of the rest of the EP rolls at a hip-hop tempo, with Longo and pals dropping head-nodding heat such as "Crowd Jumpin' (Dj PH Mix)" and the "golden era" flava of Ben Muller hook-up "Movin Up".

Review: New York City's Joseph Longo should need no introduction. One of the most important and genre defining artists on the scene, his seminal releases under aliases Earth People, French Touch and most notably Pal Joey, have left their indelible fingerprint on house music to this very day. German label Ornaments have sought out Japanese producer Takeshi Fukushima (GWM, Takecha) to curate this collection of some of Longo's finest moments under the Pal Joey moniker. Picking out a few favourites from the catalogue and adding some personal retouches, he presents the jazzy kinda somethin' of opener "Hot Music", the deep and sensuous bounce of numbers like "Mood 7" and "When I Get Kindness", the off-kilter/low slung boogie down vibe of "Bounce" and four other timeless classics that have all been given a respectful reshape for modern dancefloors. Absolutely essential!

Review: More classy dub techno from Germany's Ornaments with their latest release by Mathimidori: the lesser known alias of Jena-based tech house hero Mathias Kaden who has released two singles on Japan's Mule Musiq where he displayed his new-found love for echo-laden and glacial grooves. The Yosago EP features opening cut "Goya" which receives a terrific rework by label staple Rhauder, whose known style stays within the classic traditions of electronic dub similar to likeminded souls such as Rhythm & Sound or Deadbeat. On the flip, enjoy the personal and introspective deepness of "Sake" followed by the ultra-cavernous minimalism of "Yoto". Tip!

Review: ** REPRESS ** YouANDme drops a thumping warehouse refix of Moodymann's anthem, "It's 2 Late 4 U & Me", which first appeared on the Ol' Dirty Vinyl EP via Mahogani last year. The original featured prominently among many a dancefloor cognoscenti's Best Of 2010 list, and it's thus a wise call by production duo of Martin Muller and Daniel Stroter to eschew any rapid transformations. Review: We can always rely on Ornaments to deliver the best in quality house music and 2012 was another important milestone for the label. Their last EP sees label favourite, Rhauder go head to head with on of the most charismatic voices in house and techno - Mr.Paul St Hilaire, famously known for his work with Rhythm & Sound and its sub-label, Burial Mix. The original is actually reminiscent of the Basic Channel tradition, with those long, sweltering chunks of percussion flowing so neatly along side St Hilaire's enigmatic voice. The dub version is even deeper and indulgent in its delay tradition - exactly what we want to see here! The Pop-a-dub mix is an absolute gem though, allowing those drums to release themselves from the torrent of reverb and tape echo and grind their way to the sound of those gorgeous dub vocals.

Review: Cocoon regular Daniel Stefanik's latest EP- his first for Ornaments - exists at the maximal end of the minimal spectrum, delivering tech-house tracks whose impeccable sound design tends towards the grandiose. That's particularly true of A-side 'Echoes', where spacey, dub techno-influenced chords and riffs combine with grand, reverb-laden aural textures atop a smooth, rolling tech-house beat. 'It's Time To Build' is chunkier and slightly more groovy, despite a tough, locked-in beat, thanks to a smooth, deep bassline and warming, slightly spacey chords, while closing cut 'Destination Detroit' is a fine slab of enveloping sci-fi electro inspired by classic cuts from the Motor City.
