Spinner (6:40)
It From Bit (4:57)
Loose Joints (11:56)
Review: Last year, Burnt Friedmann and Uwe Schmidt reunited as Flanger for the first time in a decade, releasing the IDM-meets-future jazz full-length Lollopy Dripper. Here the experimental electronica veterans are at it again, delivering three more eccentric chunks of body-popping electronic jazz-fusion. They begin with the spacey throb of "Spinner", where broken computer noises and glitch electronics ride an undulating, off-kilter drum machine groove. "It From Bit" retains the attractive glitches of its' predecessor, blending them with an up-tempo, dub-influenced techno rhythm. Finally, they let their jazz influences run free on the computerized broken beat-meets-IDM-in-dub fizz of "Loose Joints".

255-6 (Sam Shackleton remix)
The Sticks (Rashid Becker mix)
Review: Secret Rhythms + is the latest instalment in Burnt Friedman and Jaki Liebezeit's long running Secret Rhythms project, and here the present two reworkings of their fluid, rhythmic patterns. First up is Shackleton who turns in a rare remix. Taking "255-6", Shackleton arranges a new rhythm based on a different time signature, weaving a delicate organ melody and rougher metallic tones around the intricate percussion. On the B-Side, Nonplace's mastering engineer Rashad Becker provides his own mix of the original piece. Keeping the original arrangement intact he instead treats each instrument track with different compression to the point of rendering them unrecognisable. Highly recommended.

Skies Okay Blue
Cycles
Silberne Libelle
Review: Burnt Friedman comes through with another slice of delicious Nonplace goodness! Friedman's music is singular to say the least, where dub techno is broken up and re-soldered into a nutty, Afrobeat-tech pastiche. If that sounds crazy, then you're probably right because "Skies Okay Blue", for example, is simply indescribable. Glitchy, hazy beats, echoing melodies and a super-funky bassline are at the helm. "Cycles" is also rather insane thanks to its shuffling percussion and oddball synths, while "Silberne Libelle", although mystical and no less odd than its counterparts, is the tamest of the lot. Another winner from Mr Friedman!

Inward Sun (reprise) (1:21)
Clock (version) (7:58)
Lovestruck Battlefield (1:36)
Review: If you're looking for futuristic high-speed tribalism then Burnt Friedman's Nonplace imprint is the perfect place to start...and end! Over the last few years, the German maestro has almost single-handedly created a new subgenre, one that blends glitchy techno together with ritualistic drumming and very, very low frequencies - a winning combinations, basically! "Clock" is all broken drum steps surrounded by mild pads and slick vocals; there's a reprise mix, too, which scraps the beats and focusses on vocals and FX. On the flip, there's a different version of "Clock", this time wonkier and more deranged in its melodic approach, and "Lovestruck Battlefield"...another stripped back piece of futuristic bass poetry. Killer.

21-130 (5:50)
18-140 (5:40)
23-130 (6:22)
22-105 (5:02)
Review: Burnt Friedman and Joao Pais Filipe's collaborative efforts began back in 2018. The former using synthesis and electronics to paint subtly but incredibly specific aural pictures, the latter focusing on the drum and rhythmic end of things. At times their music feels entirely designed for the dancefloors of underground electronic clubs, in other moments it's something very different indeed.

This latest EP lives up to those broad brushstrokes. '21-30' is a lush, almost tropical sounding workout that offers a complex percussive pattern, and combines these with gentle shades of melody, harmony, hook and distorted note. '22-105' brings elements of glitchiness and robotics into the mix. Meanwhile, '18-140' would work well as a brooding building tool (or section) of a 'proper techno' mix, with '23-130' bridging gaps between the lot.

Review: Mohammad Reza Mortazavi is the perfect companion to Burnt Friedman's steely, minimalistic shades of broken dub techno. The Iranian percussionist comes as a surprise addition to the Nonplace catalogue, but he certainly makes for an even more cerebral drumming experience than the already off-kilter world of Friedman's tunes. Both the A-side's mixes of "Yek" are just on the right side of dark, combining Eastern influences together with colder, more industrial executions from the West. On the B-side, we have a similarly frenetic experience, where metallic drums collide with deep baselines and polyrhythmic flows spanning the full circle. Well, this might just be our favourite Nonplace yet!

Review: Talk about the power of pure rhythms. 'Yek 166-3', to reference just one of four iterations here, is as propellant as anything you're likely to hear in a club, but if heard mid-party would be one of the most challenging curveballs you could ask for. Comprised entirely of tribal-like top end percussive structures set at breakneck pace, it's a great place to start with this release overall - a package that's as much about artistically accomplished complete tracks as it is providing workable elements for use in something larger. A DJ's delight, this isn't to say all four arrangements don't deserve to be heard individually. '134-17' growls and shimmers in a way that's subtly complex, ideal for headphone or big rig play. '128-10' is more about poised dark tech atmosphere, while '127-17' exists within looser frameworks, leading to more serene and relaxed results.
