Review: Mario Basanov is clearly a man who spends all his waking hours in the studio. His first album, a collaborative effort with pal Vidis, was an expansive two-disc set. Journey, his solo debut, clocks in at a similar length, though the second disc does borrow heavily from previous solo singles and EPs. Even so, it's a grandiose proposition. Musically, it's pretty much what you'd expect, shuffling between typically Lithuanian deep house, sprightly nu-disco and the sort of fluid deep-pop that sits somewhere between the two camps. There's little in the way of darkness or grit, just pleasant, feel good niceness that bristles with vivid synths and sneaky Italo influences.

Review: While Sean Brosnan's Future Disco series may have started out as a timely round up of killer nu-disco jams, he's long since adopted a more wide-ranging approach. Recent instalments have included nods to shimmering powder house, nu-Balearica and tactile deep house, and this eighth volume continues that trend. So, the mix (accompanied by a handy disc of unmixed tracks) begins with the fuzzy, sun-kissed niceness of Andras Fox, shuffles through melodious, starry-eyed deep house from Ron Basejam and HNNY, and doffs a cap to the string-laden genius of Krystal Klear's wondrous "Fumer Tue". By the end of the mix, Brosnan is in full-on anthem mode, mixing up bustling, cheery gems from Few Nolder, Fur and Hot Chip (the latter impressively remixed by James Zabeila).

Review: What constitutes disco these days? According to the good folks at Future Disco - and they should know, as they've been watching nu-disco trends longer than anyone else - it's pretty much deep house. Admittedly deep house laden with fluid synths, sly musical nods to boogie, thick synth basslines and cocktail-swigging grooves, but deep house nonetheless. This seventh volume in their top-selling mix CD series sees bossman Sean Brosnan at the controls, smoothly moving between deliciously wide-eyed tracks from the likes of Crazy P (wonderfully remixed by Bristolian combo Outboxx), Mario Basanov, Ejeca (with Psychemagik on the remix), Mirror People, Ejeca and Terrence Parker. As ever, there's a handy bonus mix featuring unmixed versions of the tracks for all those DJs whose definition of disco is similarly wide-ranging.

Review: With an excellent release on Tusk Wax in his armoury and a notable collaboration with Bicep on their recent Aus EP, Norn Irish lad Ejeca seems primed to follow the trajectory set by the aforementioned burger loving duo. The Horizons EP, his debut for the Needwant imprint sees Ejeca throwing down three tracks that are very much steeped in the same vocal lead New Jersey garage sound that Bicep are currently plundering to great effect, not least on the thickly infectious title track that demonstrates Ejeca's ease for crafting a killer breakdown. "Dazed" eschews the reliance on vocals for some deft chord usage and excellent drum programming, while "See Through You" shimmers with garage indebted warmth.

How Do You Feel (original vocal mix)
How Do You Feel (Kim Ann Foxman remix)
Review: Japan's favourite adopted disco son Max Essa sidles up for his debut on NeedWant whilst regular haunts Bear Funk and Is It Balearic aren't looking and drops some sunshine boogie vibes in the shape of "How Do You Feel?". Utilising the vocal chord flex of DC Mathias, Max crafts a typically muscular percussive groove that sits nonchalantly between disco and house. Atop this are a raft of funked out bass plods and gentle key strokes, whilst the ode flute flourish adds a pastoral touch to proceedings. It's the accompanying remix from Hercules & Love Affair cutey Kim Ann Foxman that's the real gold here - showing no signs of nerves on what is her first remix! Adding some beef to the drums and drowning the bassline in darkness, Foxman gives the track a winning old school house vibe but ensures there's a contemporary crispness to the sound. More like this please Miss Foxman.

Maxxi Soundsystem - "Make Or Break" (Urulu remix) (6:50)
Review: The lads and lasses behind the Needwant label are getting generous in their old age. This 12" sampler for their 5th anniversary compilation, for example, comes with a code to download not only the fresh remixes presented here, but also the 19-track collection itself. The material here is predictably strong, with Urulu's murky, spacious and stripped back take on Maxxi Soundsystem's "Make Or Break" vying for "top dog" honours with The Revenge's strobe-friendly, nu-disco-goes-vintage house revision of James Fox's "Holding On". Elsewhere, Mark E provides a typically woozy, deep and melodious rework of his own "We Could Love", while Nicholas turns Kim Ann Foxman's "Hypnotic Dance" into a "Good Life" style '89 house anthem.

Moving Through Clouds (Kim Brown remix) (5:33)
Review: With this superb EP, Geoff Wright AKA Kemback is finally fulfilling the promise shown on his previous outings for Omena and DBA Dubs. In short, the "Moving Through Clouds EP" contains the Bristol-based producer's best material to date. Check the string-laden majesty of opener "I Need You", where sumptuous violins and dreamy vocal samples tumble down over a bustling house groove, and the melancholic, slowly-shifting deep house bliss of "Moving Through Clouds". Equally as impressive is the loved-up, bass-heavy hustle of "Stepping Back", a gorgeous fusion of "Pacific State" style dreaminess, early New Jersey deep house and more forthright breakbeat-house bottom-end. The flipside remixes are tasty, too, with Soulphiction's subtly acid-flecked but similarly sumptuous revision of "I Need You" and Kim Brown's dusty, atmospheric lo-fi remix of the title track.

Review: Alex "Kiwi" Warren has barely put a foot wrong in recent times, with a superb DJ Rocca collaboration and some fine EPs on Disco Halal, Cin Cin and Paradise Palms. Here he adds another record label to the CV via a second outing on Needwant. In its original form, "Kiya" is a baggy, sunrise-ready house cut drive forwards by low-slung bass, chiming melodies, layered percussion, twinkling pianos and choice snatches of vocal apparently borrowed from an old African record. The "Rave Mix" is a more driving excursion smothered in intergalactic motifs and trance-like synth sounds, while the Brian Ring revision is looser, sparser and altogether more glassy-eyed. Warren rounds things off via the "Dreamscape Mix", a stunning ambient interpretation for those who like their sounds swirling and beat free.

We Could Love (feat Robert Owens - vocal)
We Could Love (instrumental)
Review: While Mark E is no stranger to Needwant, having remixed Massimiliano Pagliara for the label back in 2010, We Could Love marks the debut proper for the Midlands producer on Sean Brosnan's label. As you'd expect from a cut featuring the immediately recognisable tones of Robert Owens, "We Could Love" is Evetts going full blown house, expanding on the themes explored on last year's Stonebreaker LP and embracing a non sample based sound with gleeful results. Based around that thickly pulsing bass line and Owens' breathy yet understated vocals, the track's other elements take on a subtler role, with chords chiming in at well placed moments and the rhythms never slipping past ripple status. One of those tracks that feels just right, Needwant mercifully eschew the temptation for perfunctory remixes!

Review: A move to London town seems to have sparked a career resurgence for Chicago house ledge Robert Owens, who has been in ubiquitous form on the DJ, collaboration and production circuit in recent times. Here he joins Sean Brosnan's Needwant stable, with "One Body" remixed by Kaine, Mario Basanov, Nicholas and No Regular Play. Italian producer Nicholas opens proceedings on the A-Side with his interpretation, laying a bumpin' house groove underneath Owens' instantly recognisable velvet croon. Wolf + Lamb duo No Regular Play turn in a typically sparse 'n sultry refix, while Mario Basanov and Kaine offer two more versions on the flip - the latter's piano-heavy version is particularly bewitching!

Review: Last year saw Needwant expand the Future Disco remit to include Poolside, a compilation that was aimed at sound tracking your summer time reclined by a pool or indeed the Croatian coastline, mai tai in hand. Given the wide success, it's little surprise that Sean Brosnan's label have put together a second edition, now snappily titled Poolside Sounds Laidback Sunshine House. Musically, this 27 track selection adheres to it's title to a tee; the first CD is mixed and lays down 17 cuts that start off gentle and slowly eek up the tempo - look out for the early jam from rising producer Kiwi and the contributions from Axel Boman! The second CD gathers together ten tracks from the CD for those looking for a swift spot of CDJing to escape the poolside heat.

Review: Given the current trend for house productions inspired by the late 80s/early 90s New York house sound, it's perhaps surprising that there haven't been many compilations looking back at the pioneering releases of the city's legendary Nu Groove label. This unmixed collection from nu-school slo-mo disco/house producer Nicholas fills that gap, offering a personal selection of favourites from the label's archives. As selections go, it's pretty hot, largely sidestepping well-known cuts in favour of forgotten gems and rarities. As a result, it should be an essential purchase for anyone with at least a passing interest in the development of deep house and US garage. Besides, Basil Hardhaus 2's super-deep "Black Man" is almost worth the admission price alone.
