Review: Rahsaan Roland Kirk paid tribute to many forms of African-American music on this epic Blackness album as well as adding his own perspective along the way. It plays out like a rollercoaster from the Soul Train days to the modern Top 40 with plenty of epic covers of all the greats like 'Ain't No Sunshine', 'What's Goin' On' and 'Never Can Say Goodbye.' The record was his eighth for Atlantic and the eighth produced by Joel Dorn ad is the one with the most soul. Although the original arrangements of these tunes have been left pretty much intact, he still finds plenty of room for his own invention.

Review: Since its release way back in 1968, The Perfumed Garden has become a much-discussed cult classic. It's certainly a unique offering, with the whole thing built around Indian vocalist and poet Chitra Neogy's sultry and expressive spoken word interpretation of a centuries-old erotic text that has been likened to the better-known Karma-Sutra. Neogy's spoken word vocals, which often come drenched in reverb, are simply sublime, with some tracks consisting merely of these inspired readings. Where the album really comes alive, though, is when her words are given musical accompaniment - think sitar, tabla, strings and more - from an ensemble of experienced Indian musicians. An oddball gem that's well worth further investigation.

Review: The only album Nico gave us that didn't feature John Cale was a visionary piece of work. Not for a moment suggesting the absence of her regular collaborator improved things, but Drama of Exile certainly saw the iconic German musician, singer and songwriter move in some different and very new directions. Enlisting the help of Philippe Quilichini, a Corsican bassist, and introducing a Middle Eastern rhythm section definitely helped, but ultimately you can't help feeling this was an album she was always supposed to make. That voice, once described by the critic Richard Goldstein as sounding like "a cello getting up in the morning", was perfect for what had come before, but as the focal point of experiments in coldwave, synthwave, goth and new wave, it seems to take on new resonance and power. A thing of obscure beauty that deserves every bit of this repressing.

The Jingle Workshop: Midcentury Musical Miniatures 1951-1965
Cat: LPMH 8015LEC. Rel: 25 Mar 22

Library/Archive
Track 1 (21:00)
Track 2 (20:03)
Track 3 (21:18)
Track 4 (20:37)
Review: This is exactly the sort of record that collectors fawn over. A collection of mid century jingles will always get us hot under the collar with the prospect of how they could be worked into some next level mix that we never actually get around to putting together, Still, don't let that put you off collecting potential source material because this is a great listen on its own - it has perfect 60s sounds, joyous skits, natty melodic hooks and big swing band sounds all overflowing with positivity and hope. Both platters are very pretty and these sodas were used on ads for everything from pils to pudding.

Review: Sun Ra's Saturn label put out the jazz greats Omniverse album back in 1979. That is the same year it was recorded in New York, but it is an often rather overlooked work from the well-known sun worshipper, maybe because he has such a vast catalogue. Each piece is a freeform excursion and exploration into pure jazz, with plenty of introspective piano coming from setups that range from trios to quartets to sextets. The cover art has been interpreted from a hand-drawn Arkestra cover, and this issue on blue wax comes with all new liner notes.

Review: For Sun Ra devotees, the idea of a new album of unheard material is exciting enough, but Prophet is not just any album. These recordings are pulled from an unusual trip Ra and his Arkestra took to the Mission Control studio in Massachusetts in 1986, where he familiarised himself with the wild new sonic frontiers afforded by the brand new Dave Smith Prophet VS. It's a period of time less thoroughly documented in Ra's legacy, but the session brims with the electricity you would expect, with the added bonus of wild synth tones in the Arkestra paint box.

Review: Released in 1983, Sun Ra & His Outer Space Arkestra's cosmic jazz odyssey A Fireside Chat With Lucifer defies conventional musical boundaries as it transports listeners to otherworldly realms through its avant-garde improvisations and surreal sonic landscapes. Sun Ra's visionary leadership and the Arkestra's eclectic instrumentation create a sonic tapestry that melds free jazz, electronics, and cosmic philosophy so that the long player serves as a testament to Sun Ra's innovative spirit, pushing the boundaries of jazz into uncharted territories, while offering a mesmerizing and otherworldly experience that resonates with the avant-garde and experimental music aficionados alike.

Review: Vibraphone legend Cal Tjader could fuse a wide range of sound and styles into his own sounds. He is said to have been a big influence on the Latin rock sound as a whole, as well as specifically the legendary Carlos Santana. His skills are laid bare on Solar Heat, an album that stirs up excite, funk, tropical sounds, Latin and jazz into a suer warm and sunny collection of upbeat, life-affirming tunes. It is a set from 1968 tat is seriously catchy and it comes on virgin vinyl with original artwork.
