Review: With this being the Mana label's third release so far, we're only just beginning to see what the label is really about...unsurprisingly, we're well into it! Their last LP was Benedict Drew's inimitable Crawling Through Tory Slime, so this appearance from the largely enigmatic De Leon feels and sounds like the right thing for them to be doing. While this LP was released on cassette back in 2014, it feels absolutely justified for it to be released on vinyl, especially given the quality of the instruments contained within. The six untitled tracks are a long development of one idea, one vision that carries the instruments forward. Through intricate percussion swings, subtle infusions of field recordings, and just about any sort of distortion going, De Leon's world is a vast and complex one, backed by a pulsating rhythm which transcends all other forms of dance music. Timeless.

Review: It's always pretty refreshing to come across a collective that don't really want people to know they exist. Or at least they prefer to stay on the shadowy side of anonymity, contrasting the Insta-reliant (or should that be TikTok these days?) music age. A time when bands, producers and acts are often forced against their will to be present and visible and searchable, simply to have a chance of surviving. Let alone success.
De Leon are something of an enigma then. What we can say is these guys have been exploring field recordings, 'outernational rhythms' (their words, not ours), and the sounds that exist on the edges of dance music for some time. Informed by the elements - much of what's here invokes, or is the direct result of, interactions with air, wood, and metal - the result is essentially your own personal gong bath. So dive in, the sounds are lovely.

Review: Wild soundscapes from Benedict Drew, an artist splitting his time between installation art and music which crosses over with vivid material encounters. After a tape for patten's Kaleidoscope label, a musical score to accompany his De Re Touch video art project (commissioned by Transport for London's Art on the Underground) and many active years in London's experimental music scene Drew has been highly active. He's worked with London Musicians' Collective, Ninja Tune and there's also the live collaborations with Rhodri Davies, Chris Watson (Cabaret Voltaire) and Sachiko M. Crawling Through Tory Slime is Drew's debut long player. Music on each side bleeds together continuously, recalling long improvisational sets with dub, psychedlia and pristine sound design. All pieced together with drum computers, cloudy synthesisers and other odd machines.

Review: New York City based enfant terrible Nicolas Jaar composed an alternate soundtrack to Sergei Parajanov's 1969 avant-garde Soviet film The Colour Of Pomegranates back in 2015 for free download, but it is now available as a deluxe vinyl edition via the London based Mana imprint. It is longer and slower than his other albums, featuring a poetic narrative with strange and beautiful sonic qualities. The Pomegranates LP is a captivating collection of songs incorporating elements of classical music, avant-garde and field recordings and is free of genre boundaries.

Review: Having kept his silence for much of the past four years, Nicolas Jaar has finally broken cover to release not one but two new albums under his given name. Telas, which follows the highly personal and critically acclaimed Cenizas, was recorded largely in isolation and consists of four lengthy aural tracts strewn across four sides of wax. Almost entirely beat-free and ambient, it sees Jaar make use of all manner of custom-made instruments, squally jazz horns, unusual instrumentation (a bass clarinet features heavily on one cut) and his usual evocative electronics to create slowly-shifting epics that variously doff a cap to Reich/Riley/Glass style minimalism, Stockhausen-esque sound collage, the ambient works of Brian Eno and, most impressively, the 'Fourth World' sounds of Jon Hassell.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Record has very light surface marks/scratches with split/torn outer sleeve, but otherwise in perfect working order***

When it comes to interesting, inventive, off-kilter sounds, few labels can claim quite a strong a discography as Andrea Zarza and Matthew Kent's Mana imprint. Should you require further proof, we'd recommend checking out this superb debut album from hotly tipped "mystery artist" Pretty Sneaky. Like the shadowy producer/producer's previous, self-released work, the album offers up a take on dub techno that's loose, melodious and undeniably more fluid than most records in the style, with clear nods towards the likes of Pole, Burnt Friedman and spaced-put ambient dub. The rhythms are often thrillingly off-kilter, too, while the artist's extensive use of atmospheric field recordings makes each of the 15-minute tracks a calming, mood-enhancing event. Recommended.

Review: "In A Landscape" marks a welcome return to action for Sa Pa, a publicity-shy (correction: deliberately anonymous) artist renowned for his mutations of ambient and dub techno on Forum and Giegling. This is his first release of any sort for three years, but it's like he's never been away. Crafting dense, mind-altering soundscapes and hypnotic dancefloor excursions from a combination of field recordings, effects-laden/processed sounds, slipped machine beats, drowsy, deep space electronics and barely audible snippets of spoken word samples. It's pretty far-out in parts, but also very, very good: a superb example of the potential of sound layering and manipulation that never loses its inherent early morning groove.

Review: RECOMMENDED
If you've ever heard Tom Waites' 1999 attempt at freaking the shit out of anyone in earshot - 'What's He Building in There?', the closest a song has ever come to parodying a David Lynch movie scene - then the opener here, 'Guram', might sound familiar. In fact, there are enough nuanced noises floating about Malar to ensure the whole album feels like it's suggesting things to you.

Ultimately, Uwalmassa has delivered what you might call a percussive, atmospheric masterpiece. Even at the most ambient-drone end, for example 'Caruk', the sounds involved have enough patterned purpose to ensure you're never going to wander too far into the abyss. Meanwhile, a good chunk of what's here - 'Putung', 'Rantas', 'Belit', to name but three - are resolutely drum tracks, dipping toes into subtle effects, waves and delays to help engineer distinct moods.

Review: As time passes, the increasingly prolific partnership of Ricardo Villalobos and Max Loderbauer moves farther into the wilderness, both artists emboldened by their shared sense of adventure and peerless skill. Here, on this LP for Mana, they're shrugging off all shackles in an exploration of synthesis on a molecular level. What's so thrilling is that patterns and rhythms do emerge from within this primordial soup, winding up in some of the most gorgeous and beguiling works we've tripped on for some time. Otherworldly, but somehow grounded with an earthly instinctive-ness, "The Clouds Know" will take time to wrap your head around, but therein lies the beauty.
