Review: The Madlib Invazion Music Library Series was created by Madlib and Egon over the course of the Pandemic, and was a chance to give their creative friends the ability to stretch out and indulge in whatever type of music they wanted for release on the label. The music had to be great and able to be presented as a standalone album, just like the best 'Music Library' releases of the past, be they on labels like Italy's Sermi, Germany's Bruton, France's MP2000 and the UK's DeWolfe. And, like those albums, it had to work as easy, one-stop clearance for background cues in film and television production and, as producers have been indulging since the 1990s, for sampling. Joe Harrison's top-up to the series is just one of many, and brings a heated, undeniably infectious array of instrumentals to the table, all of which we're sure will be put to good use in the decades to come.

Review: Psych voyagers par excellence The Heliocentrics are back, some three years after they dropped the incredible soundtrack to LSD documentary "The Sunshine Makers". "Infinity Of Now" drops on Madlib Invazion, which speaks to the fertile crossover zone The Helio's occupy where funk and hip hop collide with psych in scintillating fashion. The sound is fierce and heavy as the album opens up, with a dose of horror schlock poured into tracks like "Venom", calling to mind some of the German kosmische trippers like Brainticket. Raw, wild and oh-so live, this is up there amongst the best from a band with a glittering track record.

Review: The Heliocentrics second album of 2020 is another delightfully psychedelic, otherworldly and impossible-to-pigeonhole affair, but then we've come to expect little else from Malcolm Cato, Jake Ferguson and Jack Yglesias's delightfully out-there combo. From start to finish, the music inhabits a kind of hallucinatory no-man's-land between the spiritual space-age jazz of Sun Ra, the mesmerising "motorik" hum of kosmiche-era krautrock, the reverb-drenched kaleidoscopic colours of psychedelic rock, the low-slung intensity of punk-funk and the unnatural eccentricity of Pierre Henry. It's a musical blend that will mess with your head and entertain you in equal measures. We can think of no higher praise than that.

Review: It's only six months since The Heliocentrics released their last album, 'Infinity of Now', but boy how the world has changed since then. To reflect that, this new collection of songs is more intense, dark, paranoid, uncertain and, well, angry. It makes for a typically out there record that pulls together disparate worlds and defies familiar conventions. There are moments of sweetness and light such as "Space Cake" but also pixelated realms of jazz complexity that glisten and glean. This is an album that will lead you to strange, thought provoking places, but will also greatly reward any time you spend there.

Review: Way back in 2008, Madlib joined forces with Azymuth drummer Ivan Conti (AKA Mamao) to record an album as Jackson Conti. The resulting set was released by Dutch label Kindred Spirits and has since become something of a collector's item. This reissue then is long overdue. Musically, the album provides a brilliant blend of extra-percussive Latin jazz, the synth-laden jazz-funk sounds of Azymuth and the dusty, slow-motion hip-hop that Madlib has always been brilliant at delivering. There are nods, too, to other Brazilian styles - think bossanova, MPB and samba - as well as an infectious sense of two respective masters of their artforms finding common ground in the studio. Some believe it's one of Madlib's finest - and most interesting - releases, and we tend to agree.

Review: This Record Store Blanc Friday, US label Madlib Invasion serves up a CD version of this most classic of albums from Jackson Conti aka the one and only beat making behemoth Madlib with Mamao. Sujinho landed in 2008 and since then has often been heralded as one of the best few projects Madlib has ever been involved with. It is a smooth fusion of hip hop, jazz, Latin and soul that, on vinyl, has fetched eye watering high prices until now. A new reissue has landed on wax as well as this CD.

Review: The Jahari Massamba Unit is an all new jazz project from the legendary Madlib and Karriem Riggins. Madlib is responsible for all the instrumentals bar the drums, which Riggins takes care of, and both bring a wealth of jazz and hip hop experience and knowledge to the collaboration. The sounds are best described as spiritual jazz, or as Madlib calls it 'Black classical music', and are steeped in history while also offering up a vision of the future. There are moments of abstract sun worshiping, lush broken beat grooves with exquisite solos and more prickly pieces. This sure is another vital entry into the ever excellent discography of Madlib.

Review: JJ Whitefield's Ethio Meditations / Drama Al Dente album inaugurates a new series of music library releases. It comes on the Madlib Invazion label and will see future editions assembled by DJ Muggs, J-Zone, and Karriem Riggins, among others. The series was born in the pandemic and allows artists to "stretch out and indulge in whatever type of music they wanted for release on the label." It works as both a treasure trove for use in film and television production as well as a standalone listen that hooks you into its lush beats and catchy melodies in an instant.

Review: Following on from his 2010 Africa Konducta album, Madlib continues to explore the majestic continent with his forthcoming Rock Konducta album. Immersing in the rock influences of countries such as Zambia and Tanzania, this sampler is a deeply trippy adventure into warped stoner soul and strange organic psychedelia that doesn't sound dissimilar to the work of Gonjasufi. Highlights include the loopy bass and kazoo twangs of "Licorice" and the stumbling beats and crooning vocal laments of "Welcome".

Review: American beat making great Madlib released his latest studio album in January and it now finally arrives on wax. The cult producer enlisted none other than UK darling Four Tet to help him with editing, mastering and arranging the tracks and the first single to be released was 'Road of the Lonely Ones.' A simple but immersive tune with a forgotten soul vocal sample, it was followed by 'Hopprock' which is a more warm, hazy instrumental that the pair co-wrote. Overall the album has been met with critical acclaim and is another one to add to the collection for fans old and new.

Review: These are two serious legends right here: Madlib the extraordinary beatmaker behind countless seminal albums and collabs and Guilty Simpson the man who has voiced just as many classic records of his own. This limited edition gold vinyl double album version of Before The Verdict: Madlib Medicine Show #1 is considered a prelude to this pair's collaborative album O.J. and has a mix of original cuts as well as remixes from Simpson's own solo debut album Ode to the Ghetto. It's as real and raw as rap gets and features two brief guest appearances from J Dilla and MED.

Featuring are the likes of A.G., Guilty Simpson, MED, Oh No and Strong Arm Steady, with Karriem Riggins appearing for a Supreme Team session. There is also a special track taken from the Jaylib-era that was meant to be on a second album which never ended up being released. To finish it off, plenty of Loop Digga instrumentals, as well as some textbook interludes and outerludes also help colour this one and make it such a vivid listen.

Everything they did was produced and arranged by Madlib and this latest collection is a load of new and unreleased works from the mad talented collective. It copperas a rabid array of styles from the more hip hop leaning to the full experimental and wildly improvisational. Some of the band names alone are worth the cover price, from The Big Black Foot Band to Russell Jenkins Jazz Express.

Review: The Madlib Invazion Music Library Series clocks up its eighth entry here and the honour is given to drummer Karriem Riggins who offers up To The Jungle. He is someone who can play the sticks with real conviction and shows that here across another superb album in this series. It really makes use of the chance given to him to stretch himself and create the sort of music he might not dare to otherwise. It has all been created with a view to be ing given one-stop clearance for use in mim and TV and plenty of this one surely will because it is so evocative.

Cry Folder Cry (3:08)
Review: Madlib continues to bring things full circle with the series of library music albums on his label Madlib Invazion, inviting contemporary artists to lay down the kind of impeccable instrumentals that formed so much source material for the first wave of samplers and crate diggers in hip-hop and elsewhere. After entries from Dan Ubick, Dan Hastie and Terin Ector, the latest finds Los Yesterdays' Gabriel Rowland laying down 16 funk and soul-informed pieces which would lend themselves to TV and film use as much as someone getting fancy with an MPC. Don't wait until these become coveted treasure for dusty-fingered record hawks - grab those sublime grooves and get busy whether you want to make use of them or simply savour the flavour.

Review: Dan Ubick is best known as Connie Price, generally found playing with his band The Keystones. But here he's been invited to indulge in a different kind of pursuit by none other than Madly and Stones Throw driving force Egon. They started the Madlib Invazion Library Series to invite certain talented friends to indulge a particular sound in the particular mindset of library music and for Ubick that meant exploring the depth and breadth of something he calls canyon funk. The name is quite explanatory and here you get some heavy funk grooves laced through with Ubick's twanging guitar for a sound which splits the difference between country and funk and comes off sounding like the consummate library album in the process.
