Review: German band Embryo is impossibly prolific. By our loose estimations, Auf Auf is around their 42nd full length and it comes on Madlib Invasion which is of course the label owned by the hip hop giant, Madlib. The American great has said before that Embryo is his favourite rock band and they come through for him on this one with its bold and genre-bending sounds. Mixing up rock, kraut, prog, jazz, fusion as well as music of Afghanistan and psychedelic rock, it's a worldly record that takes you on a trip.

Review: This is the second new entry into Madlib's recently launched Madlib Invazion Library Series. It comes from The Nesta Vaults and finds Jake Ferguson and Heliocentrics man Malcolm Catto offering up their own unique and instrumental take on cosmic funk and psychedelic jazz. The 11-track set is deeply mystic and mesmerising with ethnic melodies leads and plenty of trippy guitar lines over compelling rhythms. At times it's woozy and late length and at others its more experimental and dark in its careful exploration of the unknown. A creative collection that makes another fine entry in this young series.

Review: Freddie Gibbs and Madlib have now joined up for a number of well received collaborations. PiNata was one of the early ones back in 2014. It has remained a best seller ever since and For Record Store Day 2021 they updated it with an 80s fuelled version. This one has been lacquered at half speed master and comes in an 80s themed cover with bright neons and retro-future Miami Vice kind of vibes. The music remains a vital mix of great beats and hard bars from these two masters.

Review: Way back in 2008, Madlib joined forces with Azymuth drummer Ivan Conti (AKA Mamao) to record an album as Jackson Conti. The resulting set was released by Dutch label Kindred Spirits and has since become something of a collector's item. This reissue then is long overdue. Musically, the album provides a brilliant blend of extra-percussive Latin jazz, the synth-laden jazz-funk sounds of Azymuth and the dusty, slow-motion hip-hop that Madlib has always been brilliant at delivering. There are nods, too, to other Brazilian styles - think bossanova, MPB and samba - as well as an infectious sense of two respective masters of their artforms finding common ground in the studio. Some believe it's one of Madlib's finest - and most interesting - releases, and we tend to agree.

Review: This Record Store Blanc Friday, US label Madlib Invasion serves up a CD version of this most classic of albums from Jackson Conti aka the one and only beat making behemoth Madlib with Mamao. Sujinho landed in 2008 and since then has often been heralded as one of the best few projects Madlib has ever been involved with. It is a smooth fusion of hip hop, jazz, Latin and soul that, on vinyl, has fetched eye watering high prices until now. A new reissue has landed on wax as well as this CD.

Review: The Jahari Massamba Unit is an all new jazz project from the legendary Madlib and Karriem Riggins. Madlib is responsible for all the instrumentals bar the drums, which Riggins takes care of, and both bring a wealth of jazz and hip hop experience and knowledge to the collaboration. The sounds are best described as spiritual jazz, or as Madlib calls it 'Black classical music', and are steeped in history while also offering up a vision of the future. There are moments of abstract sun worshiping, lush broken beat grooves with exquisite solos and more prickly pieces. This sure is another vital entry into the ever excellent discography of Madlib.

Review: These seven tracks of scuzzy, lo-fi indie are ingrained with the sound of London streets. The trio of musicians behind it - guitarist Barrie Cadogan, bassist Lewis Wharton and drummer Malcolm Catto - draw on all their 25-year plus experiences of working in multiple genres to serve up blues and rock collisions, psyched-out indie trips, gauzy, summer of love sonics and breakbeat and jazz fusions. The tracks were recorded with minimal overdubs making for an expansive and all consuming sound where the driving rhythm sections do the heavy lifting while the swirling sonics up top take things to a higher level. It might be deeper and darker than you'd expect of this band, but what else would you expect of a record made during this most weird of years.

The collection explores a fusion of psychedelic jazz, experimental soul and cosmic fusion. Initiated by Madlib and Egon, this series provides a platform for their creative peers to explore diverse musical genres which is what happened here and then some with standouts like 'Expressions From The Ear' and 'A Piece For Reflection' showing the two different poles of sound that are explored.

Review: If any there's any test of popularity for an album, it's deluxe editions and remasterings only a year after release. Hip-hop producer extraordinaire Madlib's 'Sound Ancestors' is one such example, seeing a green vinyl version in a luminous sleeve and even a different album cover, created using the same method of soundwave-generated patterns by the artist Mason London. Oh, and if that wasn't enough for you, this one's front cover glows in the dark. No change on the tracklist here, but we're at least given a prime opportunity to reflect on a modern-day, gleaming, beatsmithing masterwork that could only come from one of the scene's most eminent minds. Through formless, resampled spiritual jazz and wonky soul dirges, it's one for the ages.

Review: Originally released in 2010, this album from Madlib's Medicine Show series saw him delving deep into the pocket of mother Africa for his source material, coming up with new slants on his unmistakable grooves. The samples centred around African records from the early 70s, from Afrobeat to funk, psych rock to soul, from all over the continent. Of course, Madlib is one of those artists whose signature is so strong, it all ends up sounding like him, but these high-life guitar licks and dusty drum beatdowns add an extra layer of vibe to one of the illest producers to ever do it. 37 beats taking you deep into the continent where it all began.

Review: Madlib's mad one a month release mission continues with his fifth outing on his own imprint, Madlib Invazion. The odd numbers in the series are joints produced by the man himself, while the evens are mixtapes. This one looks at his personal history as a the loop digga over a ten year span in which Madlib cranked out a whole slew of mixtapes. They were his early productions for the Alkaholiks in about 1992, while his popular Quasimoto album came in 2000, before a sabbatical saw him go and work on his fictional jazz outfit Yesterdays New Quintet.

Review: He may be prolific, but Sound Ancestors is still Madlib's first solo album under his most famous alias for almost eight years (the others were collaborations or released under one of his other pseudonyms). Sound Ancestors, then, is a significant release is his discography, and could well yet prove to be one of his finest full-length excursions of all time. Curated and arranged by friend Kieran "Four Tet" Hebden, the set is a kaleidoscopic, sample-heavy musical journey that melds his own distinctively different hip-hop beats with a smorgasbord of vocal and instrumental elements lifted from jazz, soul, reggae, easy listening, jazz-funk, Latin folk, funk-rock and psychedelic rock records. Sure, there are few surprises, but you will be royally entertained. Besides, if you were this good at what you did, would you flip the script?

Review: American beat making great Madlib released his latest studio album in January and it now finally arrives on wax. The cult producer enlisted none other than UK darling Four Tet to help him with editing, mastering and arranging the tracks and the first single to be released was 'Road of the Lonely Ones.' A simple but immersive tune with a forgotten soul vocal sample, it was followed by 'Hopprock' which is a more warm, hazy instrumental that the pair co-wrote. Overall the album has been met with critical acclaim and is another one to add to the collection for fans old and new.

Review: Something of a treat here for hip-hop heads, as the ever-reliable Madlib teams up with Detroit MC Frank Nitt for the latest edition in the Madlib Medicine Show series. As the pre-release hype pointed out, Nittyville is the most straight-up of the series so far, with Nitt and, it should be pointed out, an uncredited gang of extras spitting rhymes, old skool style, over Madlib's unusually straightforward beats. Fans of the Stones Throw veteran will be in their element; as usual, the sample sources are obscure, the beats heavy and the vibe crackly, far-sighted and cosmic. There are, as you'd expect, some forays into eccentric jazz and dub territory amongst the head-nodding vibes, making this a "proper" Madlib album in all but name.

Review: These are two serious legends right here: Madlib the extraordinary beatmaker behind countless seminal albums and collabs and Guilty Simpson the man who has voiced just as many classic records of his own. This limited edition gold vinyl double album version of Before The Verdict: Madlib Medicine Show #1 is considered a prelude to this pair's collaborative album O.J. and has a mix of original cuts as well as remixes from Simpson's own solo debut album Ode to the Ghetto. It's as real and raw as rap gets and features two brief guest appearances from J Dilla and MED.

Review: Yesterdays Universe was a loosely connected group of jazz musicians performing under various different and mysterious names and projects. Everything they did was produced and arranged by Madlib and this latest collection is a load of new and unreleased works from the mad talented collective. It copperas a rabid array of styles from the more hip hop leaning to the full experimental and wildly improvisational. Some of the band names alone are worth the cover price, from The Big Black Foot Band to Russell Jenkins Jazz Express.

Review: If you like Madlib then you will like this - a new and exclusive 28-track collection of the legendary hip-hop icon's best collaborations. Featuring are the likes of A.G., Guilty Simpson, MED, Oh No and Strong Arm Steady, with Karriem Riggins appearing for a Supreme Team session. There is also a special track taken from the Jaylib-era that was meant to be on a second album which never ended up being released. To finish it off, plenty of Loop Digga instrumentals, as well as some textbook interludes and outerludes also help colour this one and make it such a vivid listen.

Review: Having previously collaborated on a number of tracks, the Jackson brothers - AKA leading beat-maker Madlib and rapping sibling Oh No - have decided to join forces as The Professionals. This mix-tape style affair is the pair's debut album and should set the pulse racing of anyone who loves Madlib's dusty, left-of-centre take on hip-hop. They've pulled in a number of guests to spit verses or sing soulful choruses, with the cast list including Chino XL, Elzhi, and Adub. The die-cut artwork - featured only on a limited number of copies - is also a thing of beauty.
