The Optimist
15 Years Later
Into
Review: The first release of a new year for Kontra-Musik sees the Malmo label introducing a new face to the ever diverse roster in the shape of Roberto Clementi. With previous material for Echochord and Soma, Italian Clementi has shown he belongs at the dubbier end of the techno spectrum and it's a style he brings to Kontra with the four track Diodes. Apparently executed using "tape and field recordings and an array of analogue machinery", Clementi's range as a producer is on full display here, with the title track dominated by that wonderfully lazy dubby chord that dances around throughout. "The Optimist" could be considered the 'banger' here, such is the instant feeling it instils, whilst "15 Years Later" is positively dreamlike.

Factory Report One
Factory Report Two
Review: Swedish imprint Kontra Musik has endeared itself to us here at Juno with sublime releases from the likes of Luke Hess and Jason Fine. This latest 12", from Berghain resident Marcel Dettmann, contains two tracks entitled, in typically no-nonsense fashion, Factory Report One & Two. However the contents aren't as industrial as the title suggests; "Factory Report One" sees the producer in restrained, introverted mode, with the result a crackly piece that has shades of Donato Dozzy's techno ambience. Flipside track "Factory Report Two" is at once immersive and subtly epic, and offers a fascinating into how Dettmann is expanding his sonic palette.

Review: Dusseldorf trio The Durian Brothers arise on Kontra-Musik with Das Macht Modern, the latest release wrapped in sonic intrigue from the Malmo-based label. Made up of Made up of Stefan Schwander, Mark Matter and Florian Meyer, this trio are Brothers only in name, and perhaps the unique bond they have for creating music using modified turntables, sequencers and other machinery, an unorthodox method that ensures The Durian Brothers are fully deserving of the term experimental. There's plenty of variety in tone and sound achieved across the five tracks, even if they all share a certain loose limbered rhythm and ooze organic vitality (in the case of "Secession" it sounds like bodily functions are being manipulated). Undoubtedly one of this year's most interesting techno records without a doubt!

Review: Michigan resident Jason Fine delivered a great album in Future Thought for Kontra Music late last year and the German imprint subsequently graced us with a pair of superlative remixes of tracks from the LP by Ben Klock and Oni Ayhun. Fine returns to Kontra with four tracks of synesthesiastic techno heavy on the layered atmospherics and harmonies. It's the raw retro electro programming of ''Blue'' and ''Red'' that impress the most on this slab of clear red vinyl. Top release.

Jason Fine - "Puttin It Out" (A Made Up Sound remix)
Jason Fine - "Human Need" (Heinrich Mueller Celestial Sphere mix)
Review: Repress: As one of the younger breed of Detroit talents, Jason Fine is still just starting to get a foothold, despite having a good few years of releases behind him. His Kontra Musik relationship has proven to be the most fruitful, and this remix package capitalises on that with two top shelf commissions. A Made Up Sound brings his unmistakable broken house swing to bear, with warming subs and thick swathes of pad and melody twisted to Dave Huismann's crafty designs. Heinrich Muller brings the Drexciyan vibes in abundance with his punchy electro stance that remains peerless after all these years.

Port Strays
Review: After last year's accomplished self-titled debut for the Skudge White label, Martin Skogehall and Thomas Jaldemark (of MRSK and Donk Boys fame respectively) realign as Fisherman for a second limited 12" release that demonstrates all is well in Swedish techno. Appearing on Kontra's own White Label Series, the Delirium Tremens 12" sees Fishermen edge their sound towards the 120bpm mark without departing from their sound palette of heavy, industrial techno with a fearsome grasp of texture and tone. The snarling acid and bleak melodics of "Six Pounders" and unearthly growl of "Black Haze" stand out at first listen, but it's the discordant chime of final track "Port Strays" which lodges in your brain most.

Review: The Matador EP sees Frak returning for a fifth White label release on the excellent Kontra Music label. Although this record struggles to capture the pure mania of a Frak live performance, which involves green jackets, tinfoil masks and a table full of vintage hardware, it is, like their other Kontra white labels, filled with skewed analogue techno. Both "Raw Space" and "Kom Deluxe" display the trio's ability to constructing thick, mid-tempo acid tracks filled with dub textures while the furious bassline and manic melody of "Fragmentus" and maddening three note structure of "Acid Colour" show them at their most unhinged.

Machines Drifting Away
To Find A Way Home
Review: Whilst not quite appearing at the same dizzying rate of last year, it's still quite difficult to keep a hold on all the material that surfaces with the discernible sonic stamp of veteran Scandinavian scamps Frak. Aside from their own Borft Records, Kontra Music has been a steady outlet for Frak material for the past two years and Fusion In Park is a welcome addition to the Malmo label's output thus far this year, providing something different to Rivet's Bear Bile EP and the minimal collaboration between Porn Sword Tobacco and SUED and Acido Records man SVN. For their part, Kontra mischievously describe Frak as "the Swedish House Mafia for people who actually know what house music is", and this 12" offers two distinctly different sides to Jan Svensson and co's production palette. "Machines Drifting Away" merges stinging EBM and 303 basslines with jacking drums, deep house chords and other swathes of synths, while "To Find A Way Home" is a bumping techno track pumped full of filters and flange and their trademark Swedish machine-funk that at one point sounds like Frak covering the Wooly classic "Erotic Discourse".

Chrome
Review: The mysterious Swedish Frak collective maintain their 100 per cent appearance record on the fledgling and eminently collectible Kontra White Label series with this killer plate! Kontra describe lead track "Wobbler" as Frak leaving "Karlskrona for a short visit to Omar-S' Detroit" and it does have that raw FXHE charm to it, no pretence to anything more than a track perfectly suited to late nights in a warehouse, basement or house party. It's little more than a booming kick drum, a nonchalant sounding synth stab and a jagged, modulating acid line traversing the scales with burning menace, and it's the confidence with which dramatic shifts occur that sets Frak apart. Those Frak heads wanting something a bit more in line with their excellently weird Muzika Electronic LP for Digitalis earlier this year will relish the B Side. "Chrome" is a gaseous exercise in droning analogue freeform funk that practically crawls out of the speakers like one of those creepy spirits in Japanese horror films.

A Night In The Woods (Rivet remix)
Review: California's Tyler Friedman continues to explore the outer hinterland of techno on his second release for the ever excellent Kontra Musik imprint. Much like his debut missive Revolve, Friedman is not afraid to use every inch of wax to experiment sonically with your perceptions of techno here. "A Night In The Woods" begins as a ball of impossibly ravelled rhythmic textures that suddenly unfurl into an intense hailstorm of melodics which reaches a peak and attains a whole new chiming, cinematic gloss. As musically refined as Friedman's original is, those craving something more appropriate for the dancefloor will revel in the accompanying remix from Rivet, who turns in a pounding, disjointed remix brimming with dirty funk.

Kyrka 2.0 (Minilogue Will Of Wind remix)
Acapellan (Donato Dozzy remix)
Djup House (Dorisburg remix)
Review: Jonsson and Alter's album Mod flew under the radar last year - somewhat criminal considering its subtle electronic charms. It's not surprising therefore that Kontra have pulled this rather special remix package out of the bag. First up, minimal titans Minilogue transform "Kyrka 2.0" with a typically simmering arpeggio adding some colour to the original's sepia tones. Donato Dozzy meanwhile reworks "Acapellan", opting not to tinker with the formula too much and instead concentrating on making it that bit deeper. Perhaps the most radical and inspired reworking come from Aniara Recordings' Dorisburg, whose version of "Djup House" sees a thick bassline tumbling back in on itself on a hypnotic groove that is deceptively bumping.

En Melodi (Frak remix)
Review: Kontra faithfuls Jonsson & Alter are gearing up for the release of the snappily titled 2, their second LP for the superb Malmo-based label (watch out now Dettmann) and what better way to raise expectation than issue a preceding 12" featuring a remix from those merry Scandinavian pranksters Frak? Having established a reputation for ambience and atmosphere, minimal effort and maximum impact sounds on their previous material together, the forthcoming 2nd LP from Jonsson & Alter looks set to continue that on the basis of "En Melodi" and "Tribunen," the two album cuts featured here with the former particularly crisp and deep. Despite having the sort of discography that would intimidate many, the Frak remix of "En Melodi" is only the trio's second ever commissioned remix. Nonetheless it falls in line with the harsh, raw industrial techno they are sometimes known to lay down.

Review: With a collective production heritage that includes releases for Delsin, Bosconi, Further and Kontra Musik, the Italian pairing of Mass Prod and Herva further enhance the view that house and techno is being well served by the music of their country. Joining forces for a 12" on Kontra's White Label series, Mass Prod and Herva essentially break Frak's 100% appearance record and do so in fine fashion with Technology Fail As A Birth Control For Unnecessary Recordings, a four track EP that pairs interesting titles with equally interesting sounds. Distorted funk and lo-fi production values are nothing new in current house music, but these tracks have their own charm, one minute happily engaging the dancefloor and another sounding like the remains of "Any Other Styles" by Theo after 30 minutes in a blender.

Review: The second of three highly collectible 10" samplers from Mokira's upcoming album for Kontra Music arrives replete with a remix from Echospace, the deep and dubby collab between Rod Modell and Steven Hitchell. The original version of "Axis Audio" is a dark, dubby, clunking slice of ambient techno. The beatless track lurches forward through a darkened forest of mechanical creaks and eerie, bubbling atmospherics. Ehcospace endow the track with a rhythmic pulse as a 4/4 drum pattern enters the soundscape, yet manage to retain the original's underlying sense of menace.

Review: Sweden's Kontra Musik for the last five years has been consistently releasing quality modern techno. This new one, The Dance, is a collaboration recorded live at Inkonst in Malmo, Sweden, with Mullaert doing live electronics along with Ulf Eriksson's record playing. Tracks on this vinyl release are obviously minus Mallaert's jamming, although we'd highly recommend listening to the CD release as well. Highlights on here are the driving minimalist funk of Villa Abo's "A Different Lick", the sleek yet relentless "Boly Ascend" by Kondens and of course the Dettmann influenced "M. Headroom" by Porn Sword Tobacco and SVN.

Review: Sebastian 'Minilogue' Mullaert and Kontra-Musik boss Ulf Eriksson have a "long-lasting musical love affair". It's one that's seen them frequently play club gigs together, where they blend the boundaries between DJing and live performance. The Dance was recorded at one such session at Inkonst in Malmo, Sweden, and sees them deliver the kind of atmospheric, undulating, slowly evolving, minimalist techno journey for which they've become renowned. Amongst the 17 tracks you'll find nine previously unreleased cuts, including three from Mullaert, and some impressive exclusives from Andreas Tilliander and Porn Sword Tobacco & SVN.

Review: While his full-length excursions on Further have seen Manuel "Nuel" Fogliata explore the furthest reaches of leftfield electronica, his 12" singles largely remain a bastion of thrusting, dark-side techno (with an occasional side order of fizzing electro). This five-track excursion on Kontra is a little more varied in tone and texture, but is still weighed heavily towards the needs of dancefoors. Check, in particular, the rumbling, dub-flecked techno melancholia of "No Wonder", the pitch-black, Donato Dozzy-ish "Replica" and opener "Ballet", a beat-free excursion whose rising and falling melody lines surge forwards at a techno tempo. Elsewhere, "The Swan Song" is a fine chunk of bass-heavy, deep space electro, while "Surrender" is a clandestine slice of dark ambient sludge.

Review: Kontra-Musik facilitate another round of Mariana trench deep techno from City Centre Offices experimentalist Porn Sword Tobacco and SUED man SVN. Last year's debut hookup for Ulf Erikkson's label, Complaints, was a fine record but the pair have really honed in on a truly creative channel with the three tracks on Feels Good. If you are a fan of the SUED output in general, this triplet of untitled tracks will truly resonate, ranging from the hypnotic shuffle and subdued bleeps of "Track 3", to the alien tribalism and watery melodies of "Track 2", via the sludgy, subterranean minimalism of "Track 1".

Complaints A
Complaints B
Review: Kontra-Musik's latest record sees the label welcome a new and intriguing hook-up between SVN and Swedish producer Henrik Jonsson, aka Porn Sword Tobacco. The latter's production alias is said to come from a shop in Jonsson's home city of Gothenburg that sells exactly those three products; SVN, of course, has increasingly become more recognised by the release, with three great 12?s on the Sued label, and has collaborated with with Dynamo Dreesen under the Dreesvn name for Sex Tags Mania and Acido. The results of their hook up is something quite unique; "Complaints A" provides a more soulful piece of minimalist yet still decidedly odd techno, while "Complaints B" delivers a more Detroit-like take on the minimal sound reminiscent of early Robert Hood. Two killer tracks, not to be missed.

Metrist (Marcel Fengler Redefiniton)
Sleepwalker
Review: Rivet is yet another masked techno producer, but on record he has far more to say than his anonymous peers. Roar, his first release on Ulf Eriksson's excellent Kontra label, sees him flirting with classic techno influences but also and more crucially, mapping out some new ideas. A dark, resonating bass that recalls Kevin Saunderson's Resse project is the central element on "Metrist". The key difference though is whereas the Saunderson project was oppressive and ominous, the bass on "Metrist" is jaunty, merging with insistent stabs and rasping percussion to create a lithe, DJ-friendly track. Anyway, it sounds like Kontra left the responsibility for techno clout to Marcel Fengler. The underlying rhythm on the Berghain resident's remix of "Metrist" is pumping and dense, in places almost claustrophobic. Coupled with a wall of building synths that have the same gothic grandeur as the architecture in the Berlin club's grandiose main room, it casts irresistibly menacing peak-time shadows. But the track of greatest interest is "Sleepwalker". There, Rivet forgoes the merciless 4/4 kick and instead crafts oaken off-beats as dense as a cathedral wall. To this solid base Rivet weaves in swirling synths and ghostly textures that loom in the background before disappearing as quickly as they emerged. It's subtle, quirky and shows that there's real substance and thought being put into this project. Long may he/she continue to nail it.

Review: Since emerging on Frozen Border offshoot Naked Index back in 2011, Rivet has become a name synonymous with the current wave of Swedish techno, gracing the Skudge Presents label with two fine 12"s, remixing Tyler Friedman, Dungeon Acid and Ben Sims, and generally demonstrating a capacity to produce both the merciless and the offbeat. His return to Kontra-Musik sees a continuation of the sound showcased on his Driftwood release for Skudge Presents last November, and is so titled because it highlights the plight suffered by some 20,000 bears in captivity who are daily tapped for their gall. Skewed vocals characterise the release throughout, the three parts, whose house-inspired synth textures are some of the meatiest work yet from the Swede.
