Review: Andrea, Fedele and Luigi are Agents Of Time, who are back after a succession of wonderful releases on their Obscura imprint with this debut for Cologne institution Kompakt. The label has never been shy of exploring the enigmatic fringes of disco (in their own distinct way) and the Pugliese trio follow this convention by heading into galactic territory on 'Music Made Paradise'. Soar up high, deep into the stratosphere on the cosmic euphoria of "Drive Me Crazy" complete with classic vocoder lyrics, then dive into the rich Italian tradition of electronic disco sounds on the bittersweet dancefloor drama of "Under Control" awash in lush synth textures and hypnotic arpeggios. Finally, the moody night drive of "Interstate 10" is indeed a dark one, but stylishly illuminated with neon flourishes.

Review: Matias Aguayo returns to the warm bosom of Cologne's Kompakt label - the imprint on which he first made his name - for his first outing of 2014. The typically atmospheric Legende is not a great departure musically - his usual skewed pop, minimal techno, subtle new wave guitars, fuzzy electronica and woozy ambient influences are all present and correct - but it is decidedly impressive (thanks, in no small part, to his mastery of mood and melody). The title track impresses with its' fluttering, glitchy approach, while "Run Away From The Sun" recalls his early material on Kompakt Pop. Best of all, though, is "Lola in the City", a decidedly off-kilter fusion of traditional Chilean instrumentation, spacey bleep melodies and a scratchy, loose-sounding groove.

Review: The oddball tribal accapella techno of Matias Aguayo's "Menta Latte" is treated to an equally superlative remix from Prins Thomas here. The Full Pupp boss casts off any notions of pleasant balearica to deliver what is his bounciest remix for some time. Aguayo's distinctive voice is kept to the fore which Prins Thomas wraps in an infectious groove of satisfying kicks and a slap bass which oscillates delightfully. Jagged pulses of acid ripple through the mix which is more than complemented by the full range of odd whistles and noises provided in the source material from the Chilean. The other remix is provided by Aguayo himself in conjunction with Vincente Sanfuentes aka The Original Hamster. Dominated by an expansive bassline, their remix delivers plenty of berimba action on top of intricate off key syncopation.

Review: Matias Aguayo has always been a left-of-centre sound smith. His rhythms and grooves are built from infinite intricate loops, and are often steeped in his South American heritage. That is the case again here with his vocal sounds stitched into dark wave tech grooves. 'The Tiger' is menacing and snappy, locking you into the late-night atmosphere. 'Nightshift, The Red' is more loose and dark, with freewheeling and busted-up techno drums. There is a sense of yearning in the forlorn vocal of 'Show Me What You're Feeling' that brings something different to the dance floor and lastly 'El Propio Propio' gets heavy and off-balance.

Review: Melodic, love torn, inspiring, euphoric and heartfelt are all words to help explain the emotional drive of the music Matthew Dear makes as Audion. They are all certainly applicable to new Kompakt jam "Dem Howl" too, and this is thanks in part to the vocals of Troels Abrahamsen, lead singer of Danish indie rock group VETO, who turns a moody bassline dub into a meaningful house production not too dissimilar to classic Junior Boys material. And who else better to remix a track like this than Kompakt legend Michael Mayer who keeps Abrahamsen's voice up front, adding a slight choral and extra chiming percussion. Kompakt striking all the right notes here.

Review: At the time of its original release back in 2007, Simon Baker's "Plastik" was something of an underground hit, a undoubtedly simplistic but effective club track that made it's way into many a DJs record boxes. Later picked up by Playhouse, the Frankfurt institution took the strange but very effective decision to commission Mr Todd Terje to remix the track, with the resultant Turkatech Mix still one of the Norwegian's finest efforts. However the original and redefining remix have never appeared together on wax so props to Kompakt for this new edition which includes both plus a new 2014 version from Mr Baker.

Review: Producer and DJ Stephan Barnem teams up with fellow artist Futuristant for a cross-Mediterranean foray into high-concept melodic techno. 'Don't Cry' is nothing short of a euphoric anthem, mixing tropes from synthwave, electro and big room into a piece that could easily function as the next HALO soundtrack theme. A robotic voice narrates the entire journey - "bringing you light, I am the star, shining so bright, I am the rain refreshing the earth, I am the laughter, I am the mirth" - as if it were the telepathic monologue of a deus ex come to grant salvation to us all.

Review: Barnt returns for a weighty, new wavey three-tracker on Kompakt, not quite straying from his trademark minimal tech style, but nevertheless working in novel elements. 'This Is For The Decor Only' is a glistening ambient trance cut, working in detuned leads and melodic 'woahs' (woah indeed), while 'You Know What's Gone' recalls everything from mid-80s body music, new romantic dance, and medieval music. 'Fan' is the ambient closer, revealing the producer's musical talents far beyond that of mere dance music. As Barnt says, he wanted to touch on a "ceremonial, emotional, grand spirit", and he's achieved just that.

Review: Here he comes, that incurable romanticist from France. From Lille to be more precise, where the Lost Paradise is located. This is where techno botanist Jonas Bering cultivates the most wonderful musical style-booms. Again he succeeds. 4 tracks with everything it takes to make a hit. A striking intonation on the eighth of every beat, runs through the rhythmic concept of the record. Consequently he remains committed to the dance floor, all the tracks still have the right dose of harmony and eloquence. "La Boum", the party continues.

Review: Bleep techno formed as a result of likening the arpeggiated bleeping of techno, with the sound of contempoary bleeps: small toy robots, Speak n' Spells, the digital chatter of sci-fi foley in franchises like Star Trek and Star Wars. Now, music editor Jurgen Laarmann argues vehemently that bleep is back, and in EP form, likens its resurgence with the advent of NFTs and cryptocurrencies. 'NFT', therefore, is a four-tracker like no other, with the banging original track coming together with Bleep stalwarts including Michael wells, Tricky Disco and Justus Kohncke.

Review: Returning to Kompakt for their first single of 2014, ever-active production duo Blond:ish have more of their moody tech house on offer for all those that like a touch of sass in their polished beats and a whisper of indie in the melodic elements. "Wunderkammer" moves with poise and presence, calling to mind the likes of Booka Shade with its brooding synths, cheeky noises and big room dynamics, while "Birds Eat Birds" takes on a more aggressive stance full of growling textures and distorted voices. "Stolen Romance" however reveals the more contemplative side to Blond:ish, working a guest turn from Audysea around a slow, organic beat and languid guitar tones with a melted down Balearic feel to it.

Review: After making their first forays into releases last year, unmistakable duo Blond:ish make their second appearance on Kompakt with some perfectly pitched house music steeped in fuzzy warmth and surreal noises like you would expect to find on the esteemed German label. "No Place Like Gnome" struts forth on live drums and a formidable tension, where post-punk sampling methods create sonic wraiths that dart throughout the mix. "Inward Visions" is a more full-bodied affair, even if it does still deal in a mildly unhinged take on electro-pop constructions within club music. For a steamy and strange concoction to get the night juiced up, there's plenty of useful tones and drones to be found on this release.

Review: Regular roamer around the Kompakt savannah Gui Boratto drops some more of that upfront tech-house business, rendered crisp and punchy by the lofty production values and hitting all the right buttons for a release that is likely to rock many a sizable crowd. "Too Late" is a slow burning number with a throbbing electro bassline and female vocal hooks, ably slipping into more techy terrain where needed but always shot through with a poppy sensibility. "We Can Go" again brings a touch of pop to proceedings but more in an 80s new wave vein, with the ominous vocals and dark synth lines working wonders on creating an edgy atmosphere.

Review: Brazilian Gui Boratto is now an established member of the Kompakt family, with a relationship that stretches back to 2006. His latest missive for the German imprint comes in the shape of The Drill, a two piece EP that nods towards stomping techno and screams for peak time play. The title track roars with a full bassline and simple yet powerful drums, its headstrong kick no doubt set to fuel many a dark and marching dancefloor. On the flip "Stems From Hell" is classic Boratto in style and execution; ascending chords and tense soundscapes that leave little room for anything but sweat-drenched mayhem.

Review: 'Everything', Captain Mustache's Play Paul-sporting Kompakt label debut, may well be the sometime Bordello a Parigi and My Favourite Robot Records contributor's strongest single to date. Combining punchy electro beats, throbbing space disco synth sounds (think Lindstrom's 'I Feel Space'), picturesque lead lines and wavy female vocals, the track wears its vintage influences proudly whilst still offering something fresh, different and thrillingly addictive. The same could be said of bonus cut 'Pulsions Organique', a veritable squelch-along which pits melancholic, mid-'80s synth pop chords and memorable, Pet Shop Boys style melodies against Bobby Orlando-esque sequenced bass and hybrid freestyle/electro beats. Like the title track, it's genuinely ace.

The opener 'About Love' (feat Speakwave) is a glittery and cosmic excursion on sleek synth lines and with textbook vocoder vocals. 'Shifting Basslines' (feat Chicks On Speed) then brings darker, more pulsing low ends and androgynous vocals from the famous Chicks while 'Laser Me' is a strobe-lit Italo-tinged workout and three further cuts explore sugary synths, new wave influences and much more to round out an adventurous and accomplished EP which covers plenty of ground.

Review: Formerly one half of acclaimed duo Footprintz, Clarian North has really come into his own since flying solo, with some terrific releases over the last few years on Turbo, Balance Music and of course Kompakt - Time Safari being his third release for the Cologne based institution in only a mere couple of years. The EP was said to be a two year long process, from recordings made in South Africa with collaborators Richard Marshall and Blane Venter along with many locals along the way. From the futuristic, electro-influenced groove of the title track, the hypnotic and enchanting tech house of "Ancient Cave" awashed in shimmering delightful melodies to epic closer "Early Life", it's a sublime journey from start to finish.
