Sphinx EP (12")
Cat: IMF 001. Rel: 03 Oct 11
Techno
  1. Knavish
  2. Hidden Empire
  3. Sphinx
Review: Fresh from serving up the latest Berghain mix (as well as showcasing his natty two tone suit look) Marcel Fengler ensures the spotlight remains near with the launch of his new IMF label. Smartly standing for Imprint Marcel Fengler, the inaugural release sees Fengler indulge all aspects of his production palette across the three tracks. "Knavish" for example is a thick set sway through viscous waves of sonics, whilst "Hidden" aligns to more standard rhythmic templates with a decidedly downward trajectory. The title track "Sphinx" hogs the B Side, sounding most like the techno Fengler plays at Berghain, grasping its own searing pressurised funk amidst playful yet aggressive programming. Nicely stickered sleeve too!

Kyu EP
Kyu EP (12")
Cat: IMF 07 . Rel: 19 Jul 16
Techno
  1. Kyu (5:52)
  2. Shitau (6:49)
  3. Zen (5:34)
Review: Marcel Fengler has certainly carved out his own style like the other Berghain residents as a producer. His cyclical, funky and above all functional DJ tools firmly wear their Robert Hood influence on its sleeve the while carrying some of the powerful and industrial undertones that come naturally given the aesthetic and sound of that famous room he plays week in week out. For another outing on his own IMF imprint, the Kyu EP features some heavy artillery for serious techno djs, highlights being the dynamic opener "Kyu" which couldn't be any more perfect an example of what 21:00 on a Sunday night at Berghain sounds like. On the flip the more hypnotic "Shitau" features Millsian style chimes and sonar bleeps balanced out by those soulful and emotive for pure futurist tension of the greatest kind.

  3. Echoplex - "The Relapse"
  4. Vril - "Thronwagen"
Review: In advance of a new album for Delsin due later this month, the ascent of Giegling artist Vril continues apace with an appearance on Index Marcel Fengler, the label overseen by Berghain resident Marcel Fengler. Founded in 2011, the label was put on hold for various reasons but returned last year with 12?s from Echoplex and Thomas Hessler which confirmed IMF's new focus on operating as a platform for other artists. Along with Vril deep and dubby banger "Throwagen", both Echoplex and Hessler also feature on the Unit EP whilst label boss Fengler turns in his first original production in some time too.

Cat: IMF 05. Rel: 10 Apr 15
Techno
  1. Dain (5:59)
  2. Aula (6:35)
  3. XJ (6:44)
Review: Rebooted with a fine split release featuring Vril, Thomas Hessler, and label boss Marcel Fengler, the IMF label serves up its first release of 2015 and introduces a rising Berlin talent Somewhen. The more keen eyed techno selectors out there will know Somewhen from the pair of 12"s served up on his own Sana label and this 12" for Fengler's label should offer him the exposure his productions deserve. Lead track "Dain" is a stripped back thing of wonder, approaching levels of trippiness that put it somewhere between Dozzy and Acido, whilst "Aula" offers a rougher, more unpredictable side to Somewhen's production palette. To end matters, Somewhen lays down a gnarled slab of acid perfect for deep in the night in the shape of "XJ".

Pollioni (12")
Cat: IMF 06. Rel: 13 Jul 15
Techno
  1. Night Hustler (5:03)
  2. Bias (5:59)
  3. Karma Lounge (feat Philipp Von Bergmann) (6:00)
  4. Neunkeu (5:47)
Review: Hot on the heels of their well-regarded debut album, Immersion, Germany's Zenker Brothers pop up on Index Marcel Fengler with four more tracks of dancefloor-focused techno. Opener "Night Hustler" has a surprisingly bumpy feel, with expertly programmed cymbals working in unison with a rising and falling refrain. The unflinching "Bias" - all dense drums and early '90s riffs - has an altogether ravier feel, while Philipp Von Bergman hook-up "Karma Lounge" pairs up high octane rhythms with a restless melodic motif. Finally, the duo doffs a cap once more to the early '90s with the hands-in-the-air riffs and pounding percussion of "Neunkeu".
