  5. Let Yourself Go (Georgetown mix) (5:18)
Review: Doug Smith and Richard Payton aka 95 North are a house music production duo from Washington DC. They are well known for their 90's discography which was full of hits on the likes of Strictly Rhythm, King Street Sounds and Slip 'N Slide, including collaborations with Crystal Waters and Sabrynaah Pope. "Let Yourself Go' was originally released in 1995 and probably one of the best moments of their activity in the house music scene. The jacking and swing fuelled vocal house of "Let Yourself Go" (Penn Ave mix) is a real zeitgeist of stateside house music of the mid noughties. Equally memorable were the dark and tribal drums of "Capitol mix" (reminiscent of classic Cevin Fisher) or the deeper and sexier garage vibe of the "Georgetown mix".

  1. Going Back To My Roots (9:44)
  2. Going Back To My Roots (Danny Krivit Chant edit) (5:37)
Review: While the later Richie Havens and Odyssey covers were far more commercially successful, you can't beat Lamont Dozier's original 1977 version of "Going Back To My Roots" - a near ten-minute workout that starts as a disco-soul stomper, ends as a chant-along Afro-funk stepper, and was arranged by none other than South African jazz legend Hugh Masekela. Dozier's impeccable take takes pride of place on side A of this Groovin' Records reissue, with a fresh re-edit by Danny Krivit - who previously tweaked the Richie Havens version - on the flip. Brilliantly, Krivit ignores much of the song, instead extending and rearranging the sweaty, tropical end section of Dozier's original mix into an inspired track of its own.

  2. Hooked On Your Love (John Morales unreleased edit) (8:13)
Review: Serious Philly boogie business: In 1979 the Aleem brothers teamed up with serial hit maker Leroy Burgess for this outstanding bass slapping floor burner. Listen closely and you'll hear a young Luther Vandross on backing vocals as the twins bounce off each other with their signature high ranges. Meanwhile on the B we have a previously unreleased edit from one of the most vital, direction shaping remixers of the time; John Morales. Expect nothing but 8 minutes of pure disco bliss. We're hooked on this!

  1. Jealousy & Lies (6:11)
  2. Jealousy & Lies (alternative dance mix) (5:28)
  3. Jealousy & Lies (instrumental) (4:43)
Review: For their latest dive into house history, Italian reissue specialists Groovin' Records have decided to take us back to London in 1988. "Jealousy & Lies" was one of the earliest solo singles by Julian Jonah, a producer who later found greater fame as part of 187 Lockdown. It remains a wonderfully evocative chunk of dreamy deep house, with Jonah's impassioned spoken word vocal riding jacking drums, a chunky bassline and synthesizer sounds reminiscent of Larry Heard's late 1980s work. There's also a more raw-sounding "Alternative Dance Mix" that throws additional drum machine percussion and some tasty piano riffs into the mix, as well as a vocal-free instrumental take that's close in sound and feel to the A-side version.

  1. Groove On Down (short version) (4:11)
  2. Groove On Down (long version) (8:17)
Review: Dunn Pearson Jr's 1978 single "Groove On Down" is widely regarded within disco circles as something of a must-have classic - a soaring trip into orchestrated disco territory rich in swirling strings, crunchy Clavinet lines, incessant instrumental solos and the kind of eyes-closed female group vocals capable of inducing ecstatic moments in even the most sober of dancers. Here, the hard-to-find 12" gets the reissue treatment via Italian stable Groovin. It replicates the original track listing (albeit in newly re-mastered form), pairing the well-known "Short Version" with the superior "Long Version" (this takes its time to build, boasts more solos, and in general provides a much more satisfying listening experience).

  2. Storm Raiders (Tribute To Larry Heard) (7:44)
  3. Hard Tymes (8:27)
Review: Trawl through Glenn Underground's vast discography and you'll frequently come across sought-after gems ripe for the reissue treatment. That appears to be what Italian reissue specialists Groove Records has done. GU Archives first appeared back in 2000, and bundled two hard-to-find tracks from the acclaimed Love & Hurt triple-album with the (then) previously unreleased "HardTymes" (a particularly breezy, jazzy, sun-kissed and musically rich chunk of bossa-house blessed with some particularly special vibraphone style solos). 18 years on, the EP has lost none of its sparkle, with the "Elle"-goes-Chicago deep warmth of "Stringing Me" and impeccably spacey and shimmering "Storm Raiders (Tribute to Larry Heard)" standing out. Simply essential.

  1. Jew Dan (6:36)
  2. Fairytale (Pride) (6:30)
  3. Chi-Town Techno (6:33)
  4. Anger (6:59)
Review: It was way back in 1998 when Boo Williams' "A Little Something For You" first appeared on Chicago imprint Guidance Recordings. Now regarded by deep house diggers as an overlooked classic, it has finally been given the reissue treatment courtesy of Groovin' Recordings. It remains one of Williams' finest single outings, with the warm, organ-rich Illinois deep house and Motor City futurism fusion of "Chi-Town Techno" still sounding ahead of its time 21 years after the veteran producer recorded it. Highlights are plentiful elsewhere, too, with jazzy and chunky deep house number "Fairytale (Pride)" and the cowbell-laden, Cymande-sampling brilliance of EP opener "Jew Dan" standing out.
