Mind Miniatures
Cat: GOOD 06LP. Rel: 06 Feb 15

Deep House
Mind Miniatures (part 1)
Mind Miniatures (part 2)
Review: Mind Miniatures, the latest mysterious outing from publicity-shy Vancouver collective Aquarian Foundation, has been slated for release for the best part of 12 months. Finally it's arrived, and it's a bit of an off-kilter gem. Comprised of a seamless live performance split into two 20-plus minute parts, it's a dreamlike voyage that offers an updated take on the ambient house style first made popular by The Orb, Aphex Twin and Global Communication in the early '90s. As a fluid listening experience, it's superb, with exotic rhythms, pitched down deep house grooves, liquid chords, trippy electronics and dislocated vocal samples drifting in and out of an imaginative and immersive live performance.

Mystery Track (6:41)
Caravan Of Dreams (5:32)
Hardtalk (4:10)

Dream Of The Red Chamber (8:38)
Review: Launched earlier this year with the saturated boogie of Atlanta's Moon B, Going Good demonstrated they were a label with a keen ear for unheralded talent, which is further strengthened on this second 12" release from Aquarian Foundation. This Vancouver group are part of a much larger collective called Mood Hut whose name is gonna be popping up all over the place this year, and rightly so on the basis of this Silent Teaching EP. There's a charming fuzziness to "Mystery Track" that's reminiscent of Huerco S but Aquarian Foundation still have their own rhythmic swagger and it shines through here, whilst "Caravan Of Dreams" opts for a more introspective tone, vaguely reminiscent of Drexciya ruminating on their aqua tax bill. "Hard Talk" shows AQN FDN's capacity to drop the tempo, lazily hazing out on a head fuck beat down tip, whilst "Dream Of Red Chamber" is simply mind bending. They called Going Good for a reason you know!

Review: Detroit trio Cosmic Handshakes finally take time away from their solo careers to follow up their 2013 debut "The Delicate Details" with their debut album In The Mist. As you'd expect from Blair French and Todds Cochell and Modes, the result is a detail-rich trip with full focus on the scenic route. Jazz, afrofunk, house and all things in between are weaved into the journey as we glide through their psyche. The slippery, subverted highlife of the title track, the deliciously stately plods and barbed hypnosis of "No Heat", the far-away horns and insistent claps and sudden surge of "Alterations" are just some of the many misty highlights on here. Don't get lost...

Review: For their fourth release, the excellent Going Good look once more to the prosperous musical climes of the Vancouver Riviera, with Cloud Face joining his Mood Hut cohorts Aquarian Foundation in releasing through the South London based label. This release also represents a welcome vinyl edition of Wyre Drive, the eight track release from Cloud Face that was originally issued in cassette tape and digital format by the Nice Up Intl label in the midst of 2012. Overall Wyre Drive presents a brand of hardware-driven acid and techno that is significantly more haywire than the subsequent 12? from the producer that inaugurated Mood Hut's label and is eminently suited to the 12" format. All eight tracks make the transition from tape to wax, though the track order is slightly different, and Keith 'Radioactive Man' Tenniswood has lent his finely tuned ear for remastering duties. Applause to Brian Not Brian & Salik Z for this!

Geckos (5:11)
Madame Moo (6:42)
A Castle (6:49)
Carcass Of Tags (7:05)
Review: Yoshinori Hayashi should be a familiar name to those who follow Going Good's podcast series. The Tokyo-based DJ/producer's contribution remains one of the series' most magical moments. Here, he graduates to the label proper, delivering a debut 12" single packed full of thrillingly loose, languid and organic deep house gems. Seemingly as influenced by experimental jazz-funk and vintage ambient house and tried-and-tested dancefloor grooves, there's an intricacy and oddity to Hayashi's tracks that make them little less than essential. Opener "Gecko" is a hazy downtempo delight, while bongo-laden, lo-fi deep houser "Madame Moo" comes smothered in seagull samples and humid synthesizer lines. Best of all, though, is "A Castle", a delay-laden saunter through jazz-funk/deep house/soundtrack fusion.

Mantle Ships (11:06)
Review: Brian Not Brian's Going Good imprint has thus far proved particularly good at defying convention in favour of harder-to-pigeonhole thrills. Who better to turn to, then, that Ewan Jansen, a producer who has been delivering off-kilter house music on and off since 1997. Predictably, Lost Embers is an intriguing diverse and atmospheric set, variously touching on dreamy, Aphex Twin style ambience ("Ethernet" and "Analogue Vista"), loose-limbed techno positivity ("Weatherboard" and "Mantle Ships"), jazz-flecked downtempo brilliance (the fantastic "Tracking Olympus"), and Mood Hut/1080p style new age deep house eccentricity ("Dark Jazz Delay"). While pleasingly varied, it all feels typically warm and dusty, as you'd expect from a producer who still values analogue hardware.

Review: Clearly aimed as a riposte to the Discogs hawkers out there with money on their mind, the London based Going Good label do the right thing and come through with a full repress of their debut transmission. Originally released back in February, the Entropic Feelings EP from Moon B arrived with the Atlanta based lunar funkaholic something of an unknown proposition, though the same cannot be said now. In the period between first pressing and this repress Moon B has issued an LP, 12" and cassette tape on PPU as well as remixed Neville Watson for Creme. The six untitled cuts on Entropic Feelings still sound totally fresh, covering freeform house, boogie and disco all of which is blessed with the sort of new age sensibility you'd hear on a Future Times release. Don't sleep!

Closed Time Loop
Moon To Jupiter
Review: London duo Nummer's 12" debut Beyond Time Interpretations offered a decidedly astronomical approach to techno. Here, they transfer this approach to deep house, delivering a quartet of pleasingly cosmic cuts that attractively flutter with melodious elements and distinct hints of Detroit style tech-jazz. "Scion" opens proceedings, sounding like a more jazz-inclined take on Space Dimension Controller. The ambient "Marvin" is pleasingly deep and woozy, while "Closed Time Loop" hisses and fizzes with Motor City soul. "Moon To Jupiter", meanwhile, has the melodic twinkle and dreamy sensibility of some of Telephones' recent output, albeit with the added allure of analogue deep house grooves.

Rain Rituals (6:01)
Time Layers (5:33)
Shedding Skin (4:26)
Review: Detroit's Todd Modes is one half of the Cosmic Handshakes duo but he goes it alone for this fine four tracker on Going Good. His brand of house is an expansive one that looks to the cosmos for inspiration. 'Serpent' is richly percussive, with sci-fi motifs and nebulous pads drifting over a groove that has a fine funk bass riff underlining it. Gentle sax sounds and spiritual chords make 'Rain Rituals' a real classic and 'Time Layers' builds tempting disco loops, low slung bass and hip swinging claps into a subtle party starter. Closer 'Shedding Skin' is steamy late night deep house with real meaning.

Salem's Yacht (5:23)
Review: Hostman and Thornley's Weird Weather project showers down on Brian Not Brian & Salik's Going Good imprint with a follow up to their debut release "Bamboo Room". Four tracks deep, each named with consistently profound or wry titles, across the EP we're given a full schematic of their technoid psyche; the slinky Silver City-style cosmic bubbles of "Leather Chair" ignite proceedings before "Private Investigator" takes us out for a deep dubby sojourn in the twilight. Elsewhere the slow-n-low cyclical ominousness of "Water Loop" causes paranoid twitches before we finally drift off towards the sunshine on glistening wave machine that is "Salem's Yacht". The forecast's looking good for these guys.
