New Balance
New Balance (Max D mix)
Review: With their pressing plant issues behind them, Future Times finally come through with the 12" single accompaniment to Son, the excellent debut LP from Beautiful Swimmers. "New Balance" was a considered highlight of that much awaited set and is undoubtedly our favourite sneaker referencing house cut in some time. A masterful blend of the rough and the smoove, "New Balance" has those trademark Beautiful Swimmers swathes of new age synths which rub up against the jagged edits, rubbery groove and corrugated jacking drums with sublime results. The Beautiful Swimmer known as Max D steps up to remix the track on the flip, bringing the mood into much murkier territory.

Jeremy Hyman - "Machine Stops" (edit) (5:37)
Review: A few eyebrows were raised when Future Times announced that the third installment of their popular Vibe compilation series would be spread across three 12" singles, rather than the double-pack they've previously used. Clearly, they've simply got too much high-grade material to share. Certainly, there's plenty of highlights on this second EP, from the ricocheting drum machine beats and new age melodies of Beautiful Swimmers' "Primo", to the fizzing techno rhythms and blissful, tuneful synthesizers of Eddy Alta's rather quite brilliant "First Sign of Artifice". With additional, high-grade fare from co-founders Protect-U and label newcomer Jeremy Hyman lurking on the flip, you'd be foolish not to grab a copy while you can.

Review: Bristol producer Shanti Celeste has been making all the right moves of late, impressively developing her melodious and atmospheric take on electronic music via releases on Broadwalk, Secretsundaze, the BRSTL label she co-founded, and Washington DC's Future Times. Having contributed a killer chunk of tropical electro to the latter label's recent Vibe 3 compilation, she returns to the warm bosom of Max D and Mike Petillo's imprint for a full EP. It's predictably luscious and inviting, with "Being" showcasing a killer fusion of her usual urgent, undulating deep house grooves and the kind of vibrant synthesizer refrains that are so typical of the label's output (these come to the fore on the flipside ambient version). Also impressive is "Good Spirits", a melodious ambient-electro offering that rewards repeat listens.

C'est Life - "New Years Eve 2013" (4:41)
Review: The third and final installment of Future Times' Vibe 3 compilation is something of an all-star, "all killer, no filler" affair. While many will naturally be drawn to the contributions of Max D (under his percussion-heavy Dolo alias) and longtime family member Steve Summers, it's actually the label newcomers and lesser-known names that make the greatest impression. Chief amongst these is Bristol-based producer Shanti Celeste, whose "Strung Up" - a wonderful concoction featuring beat-box electro rhythms, melancholic chords and tear-jerking melodies - is simply sublime. There's also a sneaky surprise on the flip, where Mood Hut man Jack J dons the C'Est Life alias to deliver another chunk of effortlessly groovy, loose and languid deep house jazziness.

Fusion (Broadcast mix) (6:18)
Review: Future Times' occasional, single-sided 12" singles usually hit the spot, and this effort from the little-known Will DiMaggio is no different. Boasting the kind of spiraling jazz-funk synthesizer work that makes you want to close your eyes and succumb to the vibe, "Fusion (Broadcast Mix)" sounds like the kind of record that should be played at six in the morning, just as the sun is beginning to peep over the horizon. DiMaggio's magical synthesizer work takes centre stage, naturally, but is complimented perfectly by some rubbery slap bass, unfussy drum machine rhythms and just the right amount of blissful chords.

Piano & Dream World
Review: Having launched with a dinky 45 from Mr Dunbar way back in 2008, Future Times tempt him back for more with typically idiosyncratic results. Anyone who indulged in Dunbar's splendid set for Ramp last year will love the selection here, with the producer flushing the dynamics of house music in sublime melodics. On first listen, Dunbar impresses most on the opening track "Polo" - drowning a multiplicity of heavenly sonic colours in bass so deep you feel it in your toes, whilst the percussive direction always meanders in all new directions. However give the full release time and all feels right - "Ballroom" for example, is a wholly unique sounding waltz through cavernous slo mo mutant disco whilst B Side epic "Piano & Dream World" presents a utopian vision of what proper house music should sound like.

Agronomia Setorial (5:38)
Review: Ever a label to confound expectations, DC's Future Times return with their first transmission of 2015 and lay down some truly mind bending material from Japa Habilidoso. Part of the 40% Foda/Maneirissimo crew out of Rio De Janeiro, Japa Habilidoso's music thus far has been restricted to some low key digital and CDr releases and it's clear from these two cuts his imagination is equalled only by his intensity. Future Times proudly claim this 12" to be the "most punk shit" they've put out and it is hard to disagree. In full flight, "Funk Do Sindicalismo" is a relentless monster, a free jazz take on techno, a collage of percussive rhythms that needs to be deployed when a dancefloor is ready to lose its mind. "Agronomia Setorial" is no less special, with a wonderful piano loop cascading in and out of focus over some drunken drums and marauding stabs. More please Japa.

Orbis Tertius
Review: Swiftly following on from the Future Times debut of Aquarian Foundation pair House of Doors and Kinetix Electronix comes the arrival of Hashman Deejay, another soldier from the Vancouver crew known as Mood Hut. The superbly named Hashman Deejay is allegedly the third member of the Aquarian Foundation, though anyone familiar with Mood Hut will know this gang prefer to work on a need to know basis. Regardless Tangerine represents a fine 12" debut for the Hashman and almost seems executed with Future Times in mind given the hazy new age textures that greet the opening bars of the title track. The track does however find its groove once the bassline aligns with the rugged yet subtle drum arrangements and the momentum builds as it progresses - sort of like a Terekke production given an adrenalin jab. B Side track "Orbis Tertius" is a more codeine addled production set to a star gazing angle throughout the opening minutes before opening out into a wonderfully uplifting arrangement that's blessed with a grubby backbone.

House Of Doors - "Bicamera" (Max D mix)
Kinetic Electronix - "Astral Kin"
Review: The sparks fly as Vancouver meets Washington DC for the first must-grip action of 2014 from the Future Times label. If you classify yourself as a smart cookie, the Mood Hut label probably nudged it's way onto your sonic radar last year, with killer drops from crew members Aquarian Foundation, TTAM RENAT, Cloud Face across various outlets. There are definite parallels between Mood Hut and DC dons Future Times so a meeting of minds makes perfect sense to us. This is the first of two mooted releases on FT from Mood Hut crew members and sees the veil of mystique around Aquarian Foundation lifted to a certain degree House of Doors and Kinetic Electronix provide solo productions. House of Doors calls shotgun with the fizzing new age jammer "Bicameral Mind" which features mix down duties from Future Times captain Max D, whilst Kinetic Electronix lines the flip with the more classic deep house vibes of "Astral Kin" - big bassline on this one!

Cercy
Review: Aphelia's Theme marks the much delayed Future Times debut of rising talent Huerco S, and is one of a number of releases from the DC based label that have been dogged by pressing plant issues. Earmarked for a Future Times transmission before releases on Wicked Bass, Opal Tapes and most recently Anthony Naples' fledgling Proibito label arrived, Huerco S' arrival on the label now possibly works out best for all given his current status. Three tracks deep, the 12? will be familiar to anyone that's taken in a set from messrs Morelli, Dunbar or Beatnick lately and offers yet more evidence of Huerco S' uniquely woozy take on house; the title track is a hypnotic mid-tempo jam overlaid with crisp hi-hats, while "Ausschachtung" takes a considerably more abstract approach. "Cercy" is the winner though, pairing grubby mechanical rhythms with a fuzzy wash of wavering synths and a vivid arpeggio.

Review: After bringing his drumming skills to the Lifted project for PAN, Jeremy Hyman pitched up on Future Times late last year, contributing an impressive cut to the Washington D.C label's Vibe 3 compilation. Couch is his first solo 12", and a quietly impressive one at that. In typical Future Times fashion, the title track bristles with glassy-eyed positivity, thanks in part to Hyman's layered, contrasting melodies, rubbery groove, and starry electronics. The track's "everything but the kitchen sink" feel is retained on the sparkling, Japanese electro-influenced flipside cut "Occupy Crawlspace", while closer "New Edition" should probably be described as "bonkers but brilliant". An assured debut, all told.

Atmosphere (6:16)
Review: Not content with providing us with the tune of summer 14 - the Mood Hut released "Something (On My Mind)" - Jack Jutson has only gone and done it again on his Future Times debut. "Thirstin" is every bit as likeable as its' esteemed predecessor, delivering a subtly sun-kissed blend of loose, delay-laden deep house percussion, rich Rhodes chords and yearning vocals. Truly, it's magical - the kind of warm, evocative fare that will still be getting rotations decades from now. Flipside "Atmosphere", an instrumental cut built around jazzy drums, live disco bass and brilliant eyes-closed piano solos, is almost as good. Clearly, the Pender Street Steppers man is one serious talent.

Review: Jordan Czamanski has never been your common-or-garden house producer. Both as part of Juju and Jordash and under the occasional Jordan GCZ pseudonym, the Amsterdam-based studio buff has constantly impressed with the inventiveness and off-kilter nature of his compositions. This first EP for Max D and Mike Petillo's Future Times imprint is equally as thrilling. Opener "Swingonoguitaro" is dreamy and exotic, with delay-laden guitars riding thumping kicks, rolling bass and bold cymbals. "Digitalis" is closer to Future Times' traditional tropical feel, with synthesized accordions and snaking synths wrapping themselves around a kettle drum-laden groove. Finally, "Fusionfunk" goes deeper, sounding not unlike outer-space synthesizer jazz with an off-kilter dancefloor pulse.

Review: ** Full Vibe Repress ** Sometimes a record comes along that perfectly captures the mood and sound of a particular corner of the music world. This double pack compilation from DC imprint Future Times is most certainly one of those releases, joining the dots on an international network of underground house artists spanning both coasts of the US and mainland Europe. New York imprint L.I.E.S. feature heavily with Steve Moore and his namesake Summers both contributing tracks - Summers also appears as Confused House - along with label overseer Ron Morelli under his L.I.E.S. moniker. The latter's "Comeback Dust" - originally out on the excellent Echovolt imprint - is given a stripped down rework from Maximillion Dunbar for the opening track. Whilst there is plenty of raw warehouse business here, Vibe 2 includes tracks that aren't afraid to deviate away from this towards carefree experimentalism, see for example the hi nrg camp bump of Alexis Le Tan's "Marathon Man" and the almost horizontal sprawl of "Volatile Memory" from Steve Moore. Highly recommended.

Review: If you have your head screwed on right you'll need little in the way of encouragement to grip the latest Future Times 12" that sees Max D doing it right, but for those that require their heads realigned read on. Not only does this twelve brandish one of the best track titles of the year so far in "Orgies Of The Hemp Eaters," the two Max D jams within find the DC dweller on typically tropical form, with the title track twisting some vintage Sakamoto strings between a heady melange of thick bass and odd drums that snap like Elaine Benes dancing. Complementing this, "Slick" playfully toys with the gentlest of twinkling melodies over a rippling drum machine groove that shifts in and out of focus. Do check the Can't Get Enuff refix of "Hem Eaters" from LIES White Label graduate Terreke which transforms Dunbar's work into a woozy smudged out sideways jacker. Things will be better in Future Times!

Review: This has been a long time coming! Steve Moore's Zen Spiders 12" for Future Times was first announced for release nearly twelve months ago, however in this period the DC label have encountered all manner of pressing plant issues that have played havoc with their release schedules. Such delays are no doubt frustrating in the extreme for the label and artist, though some solace can be found in the timeless, luxurious quality of both tracks from Moore here. Lead track "Zen Spiders" is a typical Moore production, commencing with a wondrous cinematic bed of synth textures upon which a sleepy bassline and crunchy percussion emerge to nudge the track forth across it's seven minutes. On the flip "Lwaxana" pairs a supple arpeggiated bassline with taut motorik drums with this dual rigidity offset by the vast swathes of synths that will you into a state of opiated calm.

Live A Little (2:23)
Review: As debuts go, this first outing from Mosey on Max D and Mike Petillo's Future Times label is rather special. Described by the duo as "a perfect piece of new romantic dance music", it sees the mysterious newcomer layering typically tactile new age synthesizer melodies, yearning chords and loved-up textures over beats that variously doff a cap to the new age house of Mood Hut, and Moon B style, boogie-influenced drum machine funk. The title track is particularly delicious, sounding like a retro-futurist deep house classic in the making. "TC Midi Labs" is a Japanese-influenced blast of high-speed ambience, while "Live a Little" is wonderfully sumptuous, melodic and bittersweet - all melancholic melodies, fizzing cymbals and cascading electronics.

Review: Given that Future Times' second Vibe compilation originally landed back in 2011, it's perhaps unsurprising that the Washington D.C-based imprint has enough fresh material to stretch the third volume over three separate 12" singles. This first installment contains material from both label stalwarts - think Max D delivering the typically quirky "Octopus", and Juju & Jordash showing us their "Soggy Bottom" - and a trio of lesser-known names. They all predictably hit the spot in different ways, with OV's "Junk Funk" - a wonderful combination of crystalline melodies, loose-limbed drum machine work, ambient chords and new age intent - standing out. It is, though, all good - just like the other two EPs in the series.

Review: Future Times has been on fire of late, delivering must-have released from Max D (the delicious Boost full-length) and Will DiMaggio (the synth-gasm that is "Fusion (Broadcast Mix)"). Predictably, this is another fine 12" to add to the collection. It comes from Jason "Steve Summers" Letkiewicz, and marks his first appearance under the Rhythm Based Lovers alias for seven years. "Frequency Illusion" offers a near perfect fusion of dense-but-loose drum machine percussion, chiming deep house melodies, and the undulating synth bass of classic New York electrofunk. "Number Games", meanwhile, is an altogether deeper, drowsier and more cosmic affair, with horizontal electronics stretching out over a sweaty, pitched-down groove.

Seltav - "SPQR" (10:04)
Review: Future Times' Max D recently referred to John Selway's "Shimmerdown" as "one of the finest Rhodes-soaked, late-into-the-function cuts ever made". We tend to agree. The track, a minimal house/electro hybrid rich in deep bass, trippy noises and subtly psychedelic acid lines, has gained near mythical status since it was originally released two decades ago. Happily, Future Times has struck a deal to reissue it alongside another vintage Selway cut: 2000 deep tech-house classic "SPQR". The latter was produced in cahoots with Andrea Taverna under the Seltav alias. While a little bolder and more musically expansive than "Shimmerdown", the track shares a similarly wave vibe and dreamy, early morning appeal.

Review: Future Times, proud owners of one of the internet's most beautifully garish websites, come through with two bottom heavy etho house jams dipped in pure visceral wonderment from Brooklyn producer Slava. "Dreaming Tigers" lays some phased chanting over lilting guitars and Balearic keys which should sound at odds with the rugged bassline and thumping proto house beat but fits perfectly for something you'd hear in the early hours of a Mr Saturday Night warehouse rave. Turn over for the future jazz funk techno mindf*ck mutation of "World Of Spirits", which is the sort of track you'd imagine Arthur Russell making if he was alive and well today.

Review: *REPRESS* Word on the street is DC imprint Future Times has plenty of twelve inch shaped heat ready to be unleashed this year, and if every record they put out is as good as this one sided house blend then 2012 will serve Max D and co well. According to the press release, "Untitled" by Unknown has apparently been a Beautiful Swimmers set staple and it's not hard to see why. A 2009 Running Back release gets rewired and flushed with the signature damp synthesizer sound by "a close friend" of the label resulting in a hypnotic tropical jacker that will find plenty of love in many a record box.

Review: The last "Untitled" Future Times white label release arrived in 2012, a record that we now know, thanks to the eagle-eyed searchers of Discogs, featured a Hunee edit of "Re-Mida" by Don Carlos. We don't know what kind of material features on this new "Untitled" release from the label, but the bumping hip house rhythm and vocal combo and lush '80s analogue bassline suggests some kind of vintage material has gone under the knife to create this track. Regardless, this one-sided 12" is another essential cut from the DC-based operation.
