Review: Back in 2017, Four Flies Records unearthed and released a previously unheard "Afro-cosmic funk" EP from Italian soundtrack and library music legend Alessandro Alessandroni. Three years on, they've decided to give the 1978 recording the remix treatment. Bolissa and guests Calibra 35 kick things off with a densely percussive, out-of-this-world take on "Afro-Voodoo", before Pad re-imagines "Afro Darkness" as a chugging chunk of beatdown-disco laden with colossal chords, arpeggio bass and intergalactic electronics. Over on side B the "Jolly Mare Lifting" version of "Afro Discoteca" is a veritable leftfield disco stomper notable for its low-slung bass and spacey Moog lines, while Luca's "Quirky Version" of "Afro Darkness" is the kind of hallucinogenic, Marimba-tinged number that you can imagine Daniele Baldelli playing at the Cosmic Club circa 1981.

Review: Alessandro Alessandroni is a library music legend who set the blueprint for the genre early on and then managed to get even more famous because of providing the iconic whistle on famous spaghetti western 'A Fistful of Dollars'. The influential composer and musician had a big say in the world of soundtracks during the 60s and 70sFour Flies have often released his work or covers of it. The tunes on this 7" are taken from an obscure 1975 Italian film by Elio Bartolini. They walk the thin line between disco and funk and jazz-funk with big horn and rhythm sections. Both might have been lost forever if it weren't for the fact that this label put them on the now modern classic and hard to find compilations Esterno Notte and Esterno Giorno.

Review: As part of the RELOVED series from Four Flies - co-curated with fellow indie label Little Beat More - comes one of a handful new reinterpreted versions of Alessandro Alessandroni's 'Tema di Susie', the star soundtrack cut from the 1976 Italian noir film Sangue Di Sbirro. With the film regaling a gangland drama centring on revenge, passion, and the madness of love, Alessandroni's original minute-and-a-half-long cut is an eerily serene counterpoint to its themes and here appears alongside a new remix from French producer Mounika, who fleshes out the original cinematic-soul number's circa-140bpm headnod and serene flauting with beefier drums and wilder piano flourishes; this is a juxtaposition you can hear as clearly as day here, on this A-and-B'd delight.

Review: After much clamour from fans, Four Flies has managed to put together a reissue of this golden bit of sunny Balearic funk. The special 7" marked Azzuro's debut on the label and takes inspiration from the 80s Library scene as much as gentle sunset dances on the Med. It manages to sound retro yet future, with its analogue synth waves and jazz-funk rhythms, catchy pop hooks and warm grooves. After the dance-y opener 'Agip,' comes a more zoned out and horizontal groove with 'Telefono Giallo' while 'Astrotensione' closes on another celestial ambient vibe.

Review: Roman producer Gaetano 'Gaeimago' Ciciriello aka Azzurro 80 debuted on Four Flies in 2021 and is already a firm favourite whose first EP was so successful it quickly got re-pressed. Now he is back with more lush sounds inspired by the 80s Italian library scene and informed by his love of a faded blue colour from which he takes his name. 'Notte Inchiesta' is a jazzy cosmic wonder with gentle Mediterranean grooves and laid-back cool, then 'Equilibrio' carries on the trip but once the sun has set with bubbling house drums and tumbling synth colours. 'Sambuca' shuts down with grand strings making for a sentimental and cinematic ambient sound.

Review: Banda Male was a collective that formed in a home studio in Salerno, one of the historic districts in the South Italy. It was the initiative of composer and keys man Peppe Maiellano and rapper, DJ and producer Tonico Settanta. The rest of the cast is ever rotating and the music they make is a lively mix of disco, funk and soul with signature Italo melodies. This new single is taken from their June 2021 album UFO Bar and is a low slung number with a steamy vocal and a somewhat sleazy bassline. 'Living Disco Club' (Tonico 70 Reloved) then slows it down further with even more twirling melodies.

Review: The library music crate-diggers behind Italy's Four Flies label aren't quite sure when regular collaborators Braen (an alias of composer and multi-instrumentalist Alessandro Alessandroni) and Raskovich (Guillano Sorgini) recorded these two previously unreleased tracks, but it's thought to have been around the time of the 1971 sessions for a psychedelic rock 7" by The Pawnshop. A-side "Afro Beat" is something of a saucer-eyed, Modernist delight, with the duo mixing meandering organ lines and breezy Afro-funk grooves with heavy bass. "Afro Flower", on the other hand, sounds like something that would have emerged from the studio of the Graham Bond Organization during the swinging '60s, which is no bad thing in our book.

Review: For those in the know, this new collab between veteran Portuguese DJ and producer Dedy Dread and fast-rising Hawaiian singing star Olivia Ruff has been a long time coming. But it was worth the wait. The opener 'Cover Me' features Ruff's, well, slightly rough - or at least gravelly - vocals over a rhythm and bass instrumental. It's accented with wispy chords, neat little guitar riffs and crunchy claps. Flip it over and you'll find a remix by label founder The Rebel and Roman pianist and producer Shiny D. Their version is a modern update with brilliant reggaeton rhythms.

Review: The Four Flies 45s series opens a new chapter with a collection of super-groovy themes from the finest Italian soundtracks. They are being pressed up to 45rpm for the first time and the opening salvo is from Gianni Proia's Mondo Di Notte Oggi, a 1976 Mondo movie. Gianni Oddi and Gianni Dell'Orso scored it having worked in a wide range of genres and on many soundtracks before this one. 'Soul Meeting' is summery soul and upbeat Latin grooves with a big piano phrase powering it along. 'Teenager' is more deep cut and elegant with its big horns and strings.

Review: Larry Manteca brings some uptempo bossa brilliance here to the always well worth checking Four Flies label out of Italy. The Milan-based producer brings classy yet party-starting vibes to this one with clarinet-funk driving thing forward with elements of jazz, soul, library and erotic scores all colouring the airwaves. This is the artist's first ever 7" record and what a record it is: 'Ufo Bossa' is rich in lounge-style sounds with boss rhythms and clacking hits under a soulful female vocal from Yasmine Zekr. 'Intergalactic Porno Scene' on the backside might be the best name tune we have ever heard as well as being a nice libidinous bit of cosmic space funk.

Review: The elusive Minus Group was a mysterious outfit that was headed up by the multi-instrumentalist Enzo Minuti who is also known as Ezy Minus. They recorded this superbly good psyched-out and dubbed up masterpiece in 1981 and here both sides offer the same tune in different arrangements. There is more of an afro vibe to the opener with great sax and synth phrasings and vocals from a choir that are weirdly processed. On the flip is a more downtempo mix for Carribean and chilled out vies. They are both versatile and sure to liven up any club.

Review: Italian composer Nico Fidenco's soundtrack scores for the cult softcore series Black Emanuelle have long been held in high regard, in part because they're far more fun (and funky) than you'd perhaps expect. This limited-edition "45" features two of Fidenco's most sought-after compositions. On the A-side you'll find 'Make Love on the Wing' from 1977's Emanuelle and the Last Cannibals, and wonderfully over-the-top slab of soaring, string-drenched disco sleaziness with tons of sweeping orchestration and added spacey synthesizer sounds. Over on the flip there's a chance to savour the fittingly titled 'Sweet Disco Funky' from 1978's Emanuelle and the White Slave Trade. It too features some great cut-glass strings and breathy female backing vocals, alongside rousing horns and guitar licks reminiscent of many Blaxploitation movie soundtracks.

Review: Italian saxophonist Gianni Oddi made his name through a series of slickly arranged cover albums for RCA in the early 70s, but amidst the renditions of other people's songs he'd always find space to slip in one or two of his own. Four Flies now press up a fine example as a standalone release, with 'Dreamin' in particular leaning in on sultry sensuality as Oddi lays down the groove for this flawless slice of after-hours funk. 'Geronimo' is a more dramatic affair that leans in on insistent wah-wah guitars and hot n' heavy brass perceived as a tribute to Manu Dibango.

Review: This is another fine addition to the Four Flies 45 series: it is a first-ever 7" taken from one of the few soundtracks that legendary producer and composer Paolo Ormi ever wrote (namely a rather underwhelming parody of Woody Allen's Play It Again, Sam). He is best known for his mix of Italian funk, disco and library music, both for underground labels but also stars like Raffaella Carra. All three of the instrumentals here are seriously funky - two of them have actually been put out before as part of this label's hard-to-find compilations Esterno Notte and Esterno Giorno.

Review: Latest in the Italian soundtrack reissues crop comes this pair of tracks from the soundtrack of Un Uomo Dalla Pelle Dura (The Boxer), a 1972 film directed by Franco Prosperi and starring Robert Blake and Catherine Spaak. Composed by Carlo Pes - who was also the guitarist of the infamous quartet I Marc 4, who probably played on this session as well - 'The Riff' and 'Bossa Party' are are light-footed, drum-led funk number and a piano-led supernova respectively. Perfect accompaniments for the subject of a disgruntled boxer fighting for his dignity.

Review: Formed by three members of Nu Genea's touring live band, Psyche are the latest distinctively retro-futurist outfit to emerge from Naples' colourful and creative underground music scene. While the band's sun-soaked, aurally vivid sound does reference some of the same sounds as Nu Gunea - and the mix of electric, acoustic and electronic instrumentation is similar in places - Psyche is a deliberately more minimalist beast, with an emphasis on groove, improvisation, and a palette of influences that consciously references Afrobeat, Mediterranean and South American musical culture, library funk and dusty B-movie soundtracks. The results are undeniably impressive, with the trio conjuring up tracks that are as sun-bright and hazily psychedelic as they are funky and floor-friendly.

Their mix of world, Latin, library, jazz and plenty of other cultured in-between sounds always brings a smile to our face and dancers to our dance floors. Review: Those with a deep knowledge of cult Italian horror movies should be aware of the work of Giulliano Sorgini, and in particular his soundtrack to Non Si Deve Profanre Il Sonno Dei Mortie (a movie known in English as both The Living Dead at the Manchester Morgue and Let Sleeping Corpses Lie). This Four Flies Records' "45" boasts two of the most potent recordings from the soundtrack. On the A-side you'll find the movie's main theme, 'John Dalton Theme', a superb slab of zombified psych-funk laden with simmering horror strings, loose-limbed percussion solos, crunchy drum-breaks and toasty bass. Over o the flip you'll find 'Manchester M2 6LD', a stripped-back reprise version that replaces Sorgini's cut-glass strings with sustained Hammond organ chords. Happily, the killer groove and righteous drum solos remain in-tact.

Review: The late Italian film composer Armando Trovajoli was best known for his Italian expressionist / exploitation soundtracks. It's not so known that he made funk: 'Sessomato' and 'Kinky Peanuts' is as such a lesser known rarity, and consists of two made as part of his soundtrack to the film Sessomatto. With vocals from Edda Dell'Orso, the two tracks here are whispry, clean, tambourine-rattling and erotic; trumpets and drums buzz away on the A, while the B opts for clavichordy samba goodness.

Review: Piero Umiliani aka Moggi, is the man behind Omicron Records and plenty of seminal library records from the 1970s. The Italian jazz musician, most famous also for scoring many film soundtracks, here has one of his most dance-y tracks served up by Four Flies. It features an original version as well as a special edit retouched by Jolly Mare. The original was recorded in 1978 under one of his many other monikers, Rovi, as a way of not over saturating the market with his name at the time. It is a cosmic beats that chimes with the emergence of that sound and still does today.
