  4. The Living Daylights (TJF bonus) (4:25)
Review: Leicestershire band In Embrace had a brief but productive run through the 80s that yielded a grip of albums and EPs, but Emotional Rescue have decided to focus on one track on particular. "The Living Daylights" originally came out in 1983, and here we get treated to two alternative mixes from a band who didn't take the transition from live band to studio project lightly. This is angular new wave with dubby undertones at its best. Timothy J Fairplay also steps up on the B side to deliver two choice remixes that vary the intensity from brooding disco dub to lysergic tripper without altering the groove.

  2. Saving Grace (Bullion Redux) (6:04)
  3. Tight As A Drum (4:39)
  4. Tight As A Drum (Bullion Redux) (4:35)
Review: Thomas Leer was mainly active in the late 70s and early 80s, dropping two singles on Cherry Red that provided the source material for the two original tracks on this Emotional Rescue reissue 12". Opener "Saving Grace" is a rich, bombastic blast of synthwave, all chugging arps and massive leads, while "Tight As A Drum" heads into more psychedelic territory, using strange gating techniques and deft FX to create a wondrous, shimmering bed for Leer's poetic chat over the top. Bringing an inventive angle to the release, the label signed Bullion up for two wonderfully warm, wobbly remixes. Honing in on the weirder qualities of Leer's work, these modern interpretations make a perfect bridge from the old to the new - highly recommended!

Review: O Yuki Conjugate hailed from Leeds, where through the 80s they explored the limits of haunting, DIY atmospherics with a pulse. Following the previous reissue of the group's earliest material, Emotional Rescue are back with another meticulous document of this deep-cover curio, charting their progression from lo-fi post-punk tinkerers to ambient soothsayers. The contrast between the disheveled new wave thrum of "Infiltration" and the chilling chime patterns of "Anima" is striking, but listened to as a whole this thoughtful reissue demonstrates the depth and beauty embedded in O Yuki Conjugate's all-too overlooked legacy.

Sneaker Mixes (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: ERC 063. Rel: 19 Nov 18
Coldwave/Synth
  1. Lee Harvey Oswald (Sneaker "Maquette" mix) (8:40)
  2. Trans Amor Express (Sneaker "Traaans" mix) (7:06)
  3. John Wayne (Sneaker "Dynamic" mix) (5:50)
Review: Emotional Rescue did the diggers another great service by gathering up the recorded material from Bordeaux synth-pop outliers Takenoko, and now they're sweetening the deal even further with this EP of wild style mixes from Dresden maverick Sneaker DJ. Picking three of the strongest tracks from the L'Amour Est Mon Arme collection, he comes up with three drastically diverse end results to suit the most adventurous selectors. The "Maquette" mix of "Lee Harvey Oswald" has a wonderfully lo-fi finish that accentuates the DIY new wave angles of Takenoko, while the "Traaans" mix of "Trans Amor Express" becomes a trippy, brittle beat excursion that should appeal to lovers of oddball 80s dub mixes. The "Dynamic" version of "John Wayne" finishes the record off in bombastic fashion, all boxy beats and powerful synth lines punching out underneath the quintessential wavey vocals.

Review: Emotional Rescue continue to mine hidden corners of esoteric music to bring your rarified delights in a freshly mastered form. This time the label has turned to cult Spanish label Auxilio De Ciento, who have been quietly picked up by more tuned in heads for their excellent new wave, synth pop and industrial wares. La Caida De La Casa Usher present the most abrasive material on here, but largely it's a relaxed affair. You can lose yourself in the bubbling synthesizer goodness of Bene Gesserit and Danny Alias, or trip out to the pattering drums of Zazou, Nodland, Lema.
