Byot
Review: Andrew Hogge's ESP Institute have enjoyed a fine 2013, issuing a range of music from Tambien, Pharaohs, Tornado Wallace and Shocks that have deftly widened the label's sonic parameters whilst very much retaining the overarching aesthetic approach the man known as Lovefingers has cultivated. A final release of 2013 sees yet another label debut and it's a new name to us here at Juno; 33-10-3402 is a code name for Nenad Markovic, an imaginative and limitless musician and producer from Belgrade, Serbia. The Mecanica 12" is apparently the first in a trilogy of "opium den and whorehouse inspired" releases planned with the label and the two tracks further demonstrate just how wide of the mark it is to brand ESP just another disco label. The title cut is an erratic, abstract exercise in cacophony, with Markovic treating a stuttering vocal and crazed drum programming to all manner of delay - no one would bat an eyelid if this came out on PAN. "Byot" meanwhile offers some soothing sanctity and is reminiscent of the excellent KWC 92 LP recently issued on LIES.

Cool Down
Review: The esteemed ESP Institute label overseen by digger extraordinaire Lovefingers seems to be right in the midst of a purple patch right now having just dropped excellent long players from Young Marco and the Blase duo of Secret Circuit and Suzanne Kraft. Ahead of exciting returns for Tambien and Tornado Wallace, ESP offer another sublime slice of electronic funk for the open minds out there from Nenad Markovic's 33 10 3402 project. This is the second installment of Markovic's Mecanica series and it's a sound we've personally some to associate with Beppe Loda's infamous mix tapes from the mid-80s cosmic scene in Northern Italy. Both tracks are heavily reminiscent of that era, where brash African drums meet intricate electronic manipulations and funky basslines. A beautiful crossing of post-punk, cold wave and funk. Sublime!

Metamorphoze (6:26)
T Bov (6:34)
Review: Lovefingers' ESP Institute has absolutely smashed it over the last five years, releasing an impressive amount of music by a wide selection of disco-leaning producers from Mark E to Tornado Wallace and Soft Rocks. For this latest episode, Nenad Markovic aka 33 10 3402 is back with the fourth helping of his Mecanica series and as you'd expect, it's nuthin' but stripped back techno for the open-minded. On the A-side, "Metamorphoze" takes a heavy 4/4 kick and unleashes it beneath raucous sonics and odd modular sonics, while on the flip, "T Bov" makes no effort to meander into a straight groove and instead Markovic comes up with a broken groove that's full of dread and bleakness. Quality as per usual from the ESP mandem!

Slow Port (8:19)
Plutonium Certainly (4:53)
Elika (4:41)
Review: Andrew Hogge aka Lovefingers has been going strong thanks to his ESP Institute label, an imprint made up of outside thinkers such as Nenad Markovic aka 33 10 3402 and his distinctly singular brand of psychedelic techno. This is the third chapter of the Mecanica series, possibly named from and inspired by Beppe Loda's infamous mixtapes of Afro-industrial percussion disco, and "Slow Port" starts things off with a gloriously slow-burning groove filled with intricate percussion chops and slices - a true jewel! "Plutonium Certainly" is as mad as its name suggests - a mass of low frequencies and broken hi-hats dominating its structure - and "Elika" is a more docile ambient work which dives head-first into the ether...and so should you!

Everybody In The Past (6:28)
Frigo (6:34)
Review: "Fluid as a paintbrush yet precise as a scalpel" is how ESP Institute boss Lovefingers has described these two tracks from sometime Gifted Culture Collective member Autre. It's a fairly apt description. Check, for example, A-side "Everybody In The Past", where colourful, broad-strokes riffs, paint-roller chords, mangled acid lines and intoxicating synth solos decorate a bustling rhythm track. The delightly jaunty, sunny and percussive flip-side "Frigo", meanwhile, is the audio equivalent of an early period Picasso painting being paraded around a small Mediterranean town accompanied by a synthesizer-wielding house band. Which, we think you'll agree, is a very good thing indeed.

Review: Bartellow is German producer Beni Brachtel, an artist that has been in involved with Lovefingers' ESP Institute for some time and as a member of label favourites Tambien, alongside Marvin Schuhmann & Valentino Betz of Public Possession. It's a pretty diverse affair on his debut Pankorama LP, starting off with the rather rather Pal Joey sounding "Sala Sensi" before he dives into some cosmo-balearic tinged ambient on the lovely "Clypp". Dusty swing-fuelled underground house is covered covered on the appropriately titled "Shufflington" or especially the stopmin' "Operator In Excelsis". "Notion" bridges the gap between label head Andrew Hogge's fascination with the exotic and analogue electronics wonderfully.

Review: Contemporary classical seems to be having a bit of a moment in the sun right now as it breaks out of its traditional confines and makes a mark on the wider world. Bartellow, who is one-third of the Tambien project and also goes by the name Beni Brachtel in the classical scene, is back on ESP Institute with a second full-length. Noosphere brings together parts of some of his theatrical scores for WUT, Odipus and Antigone and Der Zauberberg amongst others. It takes in cues from Baroque and Impressionism with plenty of sweeping drama and moments of intense emotionality across four sides of sound.

Review: Blase is the new collaborative project from Eddie Ruscha and Diego Herrera, whose respective work as Secret Circuit and Suzanne Kraft should be familiar to anyone with a firm grasp of more cosmically inclined music. Recent albums for Beats In Space and Emotional Response have brought the psychedelically charged Secret Circuit project to wider attention, with Ruscha a long term fixture in the Los Angeles music scene under a variety of names. Herrera is a much younger producer, and in addition to his solo work as Suzanne Kraft - which provided an excellent EP for Running Back in 2011 - he forms one third of new age house act Pharaohs. The stars of collaboration have now aligned, with Ruscha and Herrera teaming up as Blase for the Sunset Dawn album ESP Institute. Apparently adopting the name due to their shared "lackadaisical style and confident panache", the Blase project manifests with six tracks that feel perfectly at home on Andrew 'Lovefingers' Hogge's label.

Welcome Aunt Poly (7:03)
Review: Having delivered a couple of quietly impressive solo EPs for Keep It Zen and Saft, as well as a highlight of Disco Bloodbath's label as one half of Al Gobi, Ian Blevins pops up on Lovefingers' ESP Institute with a pair of tracks that the LA label claim will "boost your Serotonin levels". Certainly, A-side "Hannibal" is a definite mood enhancer, with bubbling, high-pitched electronic melodies and spacey chords riding a fizzing, Detroit-influenced analogue house groove. Flipside "Welcome Aunt Poly" is an altogether deeper and drowsier affair, with rich, stretched-out pads reclining over a shuffling, cowbell-laden rhythm. It feels like the sort of track that could induce a "moment" when heard at the right time, despite its' relatively simple - if not less delicious - construction.

Poor Old Head (5:55)
Review: Ian Blevins' first 12" for Lovefingers' ESP Institute label, released at the tail of 2015, was undoubtedly one of the most immediately striking missives from the US imprint in recent times. "Resume" is similarly ear-pleasing, with fluttering, near Balearic synthesizer flourishes, twinkling pianos and dreamy chords cuddling up to shuffling drum machine percussion and throbbing low-end. The producer goes deeper and denser on flipside cut "Poor Old Head", seemingly aiming to soundtrack the pain of a vicious hangover/comedown (delete as appropriate) via clicking rhythms, melancholic pads and the wooziest of melody lines. In some ways, it's rather weary, but also quietly beautiful.

Aku (6:08)
Review: Following up 2016's Kyoto EP on ESP Institute, here is the return of Cleveland. Interestingly enough he's not from the midwest USA but in-fact from Luxembourg (with Italian roots) and based in Brussels. His music isn't nearly as confusing though; on the contrary "Tusk" simply sounds like 'oriental electro' (if we've heard such a thing) even more than Japanese Telecom would. B side cut "Aku" equally borrows from Detroit bass aesthetics, yet crosses over into minimal techno - albeit unintentionally we assume - grooving much like current sounds of the Berlin underground as heard on labels like Time Passages or Libertine. A.E. Mancini has released previously on other fine imprints such as Hivern Discs and Oskar Offermann's White.

Review: Anyone lucky enough to have indulged in one of the COS MES 12 inches released this year will have been rewarded with a richly sonic experience that sits far beyond the realms of throwaway dance music. The Japanese DJ and production duo of Flatic and 5ive seem to excel in producing riveting electronic music that sits between disco, house and outright psychedelia and approach each song with the intention of inviting your senses on a twisting journey. In single format, this has a syrupy spellbinding effect; when utilised over the course of an album, the effect is ten fold. Gozmez Land Chaosexotica is certainly one of this year's most edifying listening experiences, an exotic journey through a surfeit of electronic genres across the span of eleven tracks. Frank Zappa was famously - and wrongly - attributed to the pearl of wisdom that "writing about music is like dancing about architecture", but this album certainly reminds us that nothing can replicate the potency that the listening experience provides.

I Bizan (Build The Progressive Band)
Review: The fourth COS MES twelve inch surfaces ahead of what is a truly intoxicating album in Gomez Land: Chaosexotica on the fine ESP Institute. Whilst the previous 12 inches have been supplemented by some glorious remixes from TBD, Johnny Nash and especially Welcome Stranger, ESP allow the record buying public an extra taste of what to expect with two cuts from the the soonto be released album. Across the A Side the percolating bliss of "Natural Lifespan" (Acid Orchestra mix) gently tugs at your senses with layers of undulating melodies unfurling to a backdrop of acid drips and a soothing mid tempo bump. Much like all COS MES tracks, "Natural Lifespan" begins and ends in two totally different places, with the arrival of a glistening piano refrain the signal for a final swerve into a descent towards throbbing techno hypnosis. On the flip "I-Bizan (Build the Progressive Band)" streams towards the inner echelons of your cerebral cortex via the ever so slightly tainted rhythm, exquisite twilight synth washes and bewitching vocal edits. Pre ordering the aforementioned album is highly recommended.

Review: We were a little surprised when Lovefingers announced that German techno veteran Roman Flugel would be releasing an album on ESP Institute, but in hindsight we shouldn't have been. Flugel has always been more than a mere producer of forthright dancefloor fare, with a deep discography that includes experimental works and a keen interest in ambient soundscapes. It's the latter strand that he mostly explores on "Themes", a 13-track cut whose fluid, bubbly and ear-catching cuts variously doff a cap towards Japanese new-age business ("Theme II"), Broadcast style IDM ("Theme III"), Kraftwerk style modular electro-pop (the exotic "Theme IV"), chiming bliss ("Theme VI"), deep space creepiness ("Theme X"), Jonny Nash-esque sunset vibes ("Theme XII") and hushed, mid-tempo horror-techno ("Theme VII").

Review: Darmstadt's Benedikt Frey delivered a terrific fine player last year on Los Angeles' imprint ESP Institute, that proved there was some stylish diversity within his sonic repertoire. Since then, he's also impressed as remixer, like on his great rendition of Carl Craig's classic "Domnia" but now it's time to have his own tracks reworked. There's some fine talent onboard here for Artificial: Remixed: Versatile main man I:Cube steps up first to recreate "H For Hysteria" merging a diverse array of influences within his charming and hypnotic perspective of the track. Dusseldorf's enfant terrible Toulouse Low Trax delivers some fine minimalist rhythmicity as always on his oddball version of the track. The B side belongs to two versions of "Private Crimes" by lesser known artists - our pick was Frey's close collaborator DALO and her hard hitting and tunnelling techno rendition.

Review: Woof! Lovefingers clearly has more music pencilled in for release on ESP Institute than he knows what to do with it! The latest 12" of a supremely busy 2016 sees the LA label seek out the refined house music sculpting talents of Frankfurt's Benedikt Frey, a producer who has been quite active himself over the past 12 months or so. Some three tracks deep, The Lobbyist offers a nice overview of Frey's talents as a producer with the title track a foray into stomping, unpredictable techno tension replete with some strange vocals reminiscent of Phil Daniels' turn in Blur track "Parklife". Fellow Frankfurtite TCB colludes on the heat-treated, murky house cut "Cupids Delight" whilst closer "Gravel" is a loose percussive number that eases down the intensity levels to 'factor: breeze'.

Here, the Osaka-raised artist unveils a debut album that expands on that thrilling first missive, variously joining the dots between melodious, off-kilter lo-fi techno, attractive experimental deep house, hard-to-pigeonhole high-tempo ethno-techno workouts (see the bonkers but brilliant "Hanasai"), low-slung dancefloor weirdness ('Feel It", the insane jazz cut-up "Koot Works") and drowsy, sunrise-friendly brilliance (album highlight "Sunizm"). It's a curious set, all told, but one that wholeheartedly impresses from start to finish, with Ground supplying enough curious touches and aural textures to suggest that repeat listening is essential.

Created by Black Merlin man George Thompson and Musicargo legend Gordon Pohl, it takes the form of 12 atmospheric, stretched-out compositions build around hypnotic synthesizers, droning textures and minimalist melodies. The tracks themselves range from beatless and spooky ("Ton 2"), to pulsating and industrial ("Ton 8"), via more robust, upbeat workouts (check, in particular, the hard-wired, proto-techno thrust of "Ton 4"). The krautrock influences are clear, but the dup also doffs a collective cap to classic ambient, drone, darkwave and, most pleasurably of all, blissful electronica (see the standout "Ton 11").

Review: To date, long serving but low key Detroiter Sharif Laffrey has specialised in delivering epic cuts that prioritize hypnotic grooves, raw drums and subtle musical shifts. For his debut on Lovefingers' ESP Institute label he ratchets up the intensity by a few dozen notches, basing fearsome A-side "Tangier" around a druggy, full-throttle groove, wild and psychedelic acid lines, snaking Middle Eastern horn solos and the kind of rumbling bassline that will sound awesome blasting out of a meaty soundsystem. B-side "Everything Is Nice" is deeper and groovier in tone, with Laffrey wrapping bleeping melody lines and echoing vocal samples around a crunchy drum machine rhythm. It's very good, even if it does lack the restless energy of the exotic A-side.

Review: Whereas certain trends and producers regress or digress at a moment's whim, ESP Institute remain steadily on their own unique stylistic path overseen by Andrew Lovefingers Hogge from his NYC base and propelled gently on the wave of critical acclaim afforded to the litany of diverse artists that release on the label. Following serene and sublime dancefloor emissions from Michael Ozone and Young Marco, ESP Institute invite you to bask in something even gentile with the self titled debut album from Land Of Lights. A collaborative project from ESP regular Johnny Nash and former Spectral Empire producer Kyle Martin that's been in gestation for some time, Land Of Lights comes with the advance warning that "if you don't have time to really listen, please do not buy this record. If your mind is not ready to unwind, please do not buy this record". "Flares" sets the tone that justifies this warning, laying down all manner of meditative textures before any discernable rhythmic force appears. While that opening track is undoubtedly the most expansive production from Nash and Martin, the subsequent five productions retain the sumptuous levels of production throughout and it'd be a truly angry man to reach the end of "Higher Love" in anything other than a blissful high.

Strange Attractor (Peaking Lights remix)

Higher Love (The Backwoods remix)
Review: ESP Institute excel at two things very important to labels; releasing interesting original music that spans feelings, tempos and genres yet fit into the overall aesthetical approach and enlisting some fine artists when it comes to remixes. Last year's self titled album from Land of Light, the collaborative project of ESP regular Johnny Nash and former Spectral Empire producer Kyle Martin perfectly encapsulated the former and this addendum 12" does the same for the latter. Peaking Lights, Tiago and The Backwoods all bring their respective styles to the fore in impressive fashion; in thee hands of Aaron "Peaking Lights" Coyes, "Strange Attractor" is transformed into luscious, dubby expanses nudged forth by a lazy motorik beat. Complementing this, Tiago gets his salsa on with a guitar flecked rendition of "Isle Of Tears" whilst Jap crew The Backwoods provide the defining dancefloor moment with their take on "Higher Love".

Bell Rock Outpost (Seahawks remix) (2:37)
Review: Four years after its original release, tracks from Land of Light's eponymous album get a new set of remixes. Fans of Lovefingers' ESP Institute label may recall the orginal remixes, released back in 2012, and this new set are just as essential. Kuniyuki Takahashi's take on the title track sets the tone, with sensuous ambient textures and gently warbling guitars creating an atmospheric mood. Tambien's version is just as esoteric, but slightly more understated, while Seahawks rounds off this latest remix package with his take on "Bell Rock Outpost". Juddery, slow-paced drums and warm, jazzy piano lines create another beautiful piece of music - tailor-made for those sunset moments.
