Review: Dubkasm's 2009 debut album Transform I was widely acclaimed at the time and has only grown in stature since. It's long been hard to find and now makes its way back to vinyl. It was originally recorded between England and Brazil and is the record that really cemented Digistep and Stryda's place at the heart of the UK reggae scene. Instruments used include Berimbau, zabumba and cuica with flowing melodies, samba and nyabinghi rhythms and heady Rasta messages from Dub Judah, Tena Stelin, Ras Addis, Afrikan Simba, Christine Miller, Ras B, Jeru Banton, Ras Bernardo and Levi Roots. A real modern dub classic.

Soundman Ting

Dancehall/Ragga
Soundman Ting (vocal mix) (3:39)
Bring The Hertz (3:50)
Riddim No Schizm (3:40)
Vanguard Touchdown (Iration Steppas mix) (4:07)
Review: Jamaican musical heritage in all its glory gets distilled into this super new collaboration between Newham General (son of the late, great soundman Farda Waz) and Bristol's Dubkasm. Dub, reggae and grime all get drawn upon and twisted up with kette drums and rapid-fire vocals to make for something urgent and direct but timeless. The hard-hitting bars from Foots bring a sense of menace to the equally dark low ends, with digital synths and stepping rhythms all present and correct. The legendary Iration Steppas also feature with one of their signature mixes.

The Meaning Of Dub (outro) (4:34)
Review: Four sides of cavernous, postmodern dub inna year 3000 style from the UK soundsystem circuit's hottest boyband: Mark Iration, Dennis Rootical & Rico O.B.F. The trio combine their years of experience crafting box rattling anthems, bringing a new irreverence, sparkle, and poppy playfulness to the classic UK roots template. This really shines through on cuts such as 'Calling Jahova' where washes of buzzsaw synth and Sheffield-type bleeps call to mind Gregory Isaacs' early 90s proto-grime oeuvre, and more austere bangers like the aptly named 'Serious Time', where trappy hi hat flurries and savage anvil snares offer up a taste of unashamed 00s steppa nostalgia, while also deftly channelling O.B.F.'s hip hop influence. Great cover too!

Dub Club
Cat: OBFREC 707. Rel: 21 Dec 22

Dub
Dub Club (3:45)
Club Dub (3:49)
Review: Given the weight of these cuts, Dubquake is the perfect label for them. They find OBF and Junior Roy link up for some hefty and dancehall inspired dub sounds. The drums are steel plated and marching, the melodic leads are florid and the vocals from Roy are uplifting. The whole of 'Dub Club' has a raw, textural feel then 'Club Dub' gets a little more smoothed out into a traditional warm and pillowy dub sound. Together they make for a high impact 7" designed for loud deployment on big systems.
