  1. Physical Emotions
  2. TV Trouble (Hot Chip remix)
Review: A teaser single to the forthcoming album from Black Bananas. On the A-side, the multi-channel frequency overspill that flows freely through Black Bananas' sound has been combed up into a glamour 'do, ready to groove through a night on the town.Waves of the late light beam across the water, cool in the evening as we head out to tha club, where the guitars are MIDI, the synths bump'n'grind the beat and arc melodies high above the crowd's head, and the gasping of the clubbers is always on the one. Jennifer's sweet delivery is an ode to the stone soul joy of being out on the tiles. This track's a blast from an alternate dimension of weirdness, perfectly nailed from top to bottom. The B-side reworks the glare of recent glory. With four on the floor like they just don't care no more, Hot Chip outline the physical motions of Rad Times Xpress IV's "TV Trouble," with a hot remix.

Review: For all her otherworldly talents, even hardcore fans of Joanna Newsom will likely be relieved to hear that 'Divers' marks a very slight move back from the artistic brink compared to 2010's 'Have One On Me', an exhausting triple-album embarrassment of riches which few ever made it though in one go. Yet there's no hint of compromise on the deliriously thrilling 'Divers', despite its slightly more concise approach - the elegant yet baroque wordplay, ornate and innovative arrangements and Newsom's unique voice are all present and correct - yet more, these emotive and engaging ditties may mark the most accessible thing this iconoclastic and mercurial artist has thus far summoned from the ether.

Review: Californian Jessica Pratt may have been born in the late-eighties, but On Your Own Again, her second album to date, is possessed of a strangely timeless quality, apparently beamed in from some alternate dimension where pastoral atmosphere sashays with ethereal quietude to beguiling effect. Somewhat redolent of the sleight-of-hand of Joni Mitchell and the otherworldly subtleties of Karen Dalton, Pratt's small-hours serenades are mostly comprised of merely her guitar and voice - and recorded all-analogue to four track - yet it's testimony to her talents that these simple ingredients weave a delicate spell over the course of these nine songs that is little short of mesmerising.

Review: No prizes for guessing what this latest outing from the enigmatic Ty Segall is all about. Following hot on the heels of the excellent "First Taste" and live effort "Deforming Lobes", "Pig Man" is both a diehard fan's wet dream and a fantastic introduction to one of America's foremost multi-instrumental singer songwriters for those who haven't encountered him before. Enough said about those people (where on Earth have you been?), it's safe to say that while much of what's here defines experimentation - hence the whole 'demo' bit in the title - it's a far cry from collections of near-unlistenable rarities. Over the course of his career Segall has veered from garage rock to somewhere close to heavy metal, punk to psychedelia, and this expansive overview of his almost-forgotten works certainly makes that breadth abundantly clear. One not just to enjoy, but to savour, come back to and only lend to those who truly deserve it.

Review: Ty Segall, one of the leading lights and most hard-working artists of America's west coast garage scene, perfectly balances quality and quantity with 'Freedom's Goblin', his tenth studio album under his own name (include his live records, aliases and collaborations, and the total body of work effectively doubles). Having seemingly ditched the songwriting rules he had set himself on previous albums, 'Freedom's Goblin' sees Ty Segall at his most explosive and full-throttle, inventively exploring the many avenues of sub-genres of rock and psychedelia. Consisting of 19 ironclad songs that clock in at nearly eighty minutes, this is an expansive and exhilarating album that never becomes tiring. The wild combination of flawless production (co-engineered by the legendary Nirvana producer Steve Albini) and Segall's balance of raw power and melodic sensibility, makes 'Freedom's Goblin' another astoundingly high-calibre addition to an already colossal catalogue.

Review: To be a fan of Ty Segall must be a rewarding thing as the Californian singer-songwriter can deliver at the very least one album per annum. This does nothing to diminish the quality of his much loved and trusted music and this time around, with the help of his backing group the Freedom Band, he delivers a live album recorded at Los Angeles' Teragram Ballroom. Mixed by American legend Steve Albini, this album even comes with a rendition of a Segall track commissioned by Comedy Central, and though "Deforming Lobes" may be on a slightly different tip from Segall's cover album "Fudge Sandwich" - and the four albums he released in 2018 - there's no denying the raw take of a wild, uncensored performance.

Review: Ben Chasny is back with his synth-drone-folk experiment, three years on from 2017's impressive "Burning The Threshold". How much has he learnt in the time between then and now? Plenty, it's fair to say, but he hasn't forgotten the simple truth that garnered his fan base, either - sometimes it's the most basic and stripped down sounds that offer the most beauty. There are waves of emotional electronica crashing around us throughout. Whether on "Mark Yourself", which uses unnatural noises to create a feeling of tangible discomfort, or the chords that glide through "Pacific". More organic avenues are explored on "The 101", but on the whole this is definitely one born from a 21st Century reading of journeyman tales. Distortion and effect pedals hitting the open road in some science fiction reading of traditional song craft. Or maybe that's just us.
