Review: The key cut from "Love And Other Planets" gets the remix treatment from some great current talent. Being the most percussive and groove based track on the album, "Launch Yourself" lends itself perfectly to some inspired and diverse remixes. Current breakthrough hipsters Hot Chip deliver a skanking slow hip hop groove, Four Tet give it a mental acid house workhouse and upcoming Swedish Maestro Eriksen perhaps trumps the lot with a hyper r'n'b roller.

Review: This lo-fi songwriter has emerged from Philadelphia to make an impressive seven albums in only five years, yet 'Beach Music' appears to be the point whereby his unusual and beguiling skills make a lurch for the mainstream, and it's not hard to see why. The otherworldly, melancholic dreamstates of this album are always buoyed as much by infectious melody as by off-kilter experimentation, summoning a strangely engaging landscape in which the pixie-ish songwriting of Devendra Banhart , the off-kilter stylistics of Pavement and the soundscapes of Talk Talk can co-exist. A record of understated slacker charm and rare magic.

Review: If you're new to the Alex Giannascoli's world then make yourself comfortable - chances are, like us, you'll be here for a while. There are so many tangents, threads and stylistic shifts of shape it's possible to dive into his back catalogue and spend years never getting bored. It's now far quicker to understand what we're talking about, though, thanks to his latest album. There are multiple personalities at play here than you'd think could be coherent, but coherent this record is. Opener "Walk Away" sounds like an overview of the whole thing - growing from desperate cry into a grandiose, captivating thing of real beauty via reversed-out backing track and looped lyrics. All very Beta Band. From there we're locked-in, through the shimmering melodies of "Taking" to "Sugar"'s deep, tense atmospheric crescendos and vocoders. Ending on the stunning brass-accented blues rock of "SugarHouse (Live)", it's as complete a record as you could ask for.

Review: The Philadelphian Alex Giannascoli has managed to hammer out eight solo albums in less than seven years, and one would be forgiven for assuming he's confused quality with quantity, were it not for the fact that 'Rocket' is unquestionably his most coherent, most memorable and most diverse work yet - replete with the same bleary-eyed charm that has always characterised this amiable slacker's work, yet with sharply constructed songs that bear the stylistic wanders from bucolic folk-pop to Elliott Smith-style angst to Beck-style bewilderment with ease. A piece de resistance from an increasingly fascinating ingenue.

Review: Alex G's real surname is Giannascoli and this is his ninth solo album and fourth for Domino. Hi style is a lush take on rock classics that is heightened by his skills on the production software Garageband. American indie rock colours much of this album with a real tension and melodic beauty in most tunes whiner thoughtful and insular or more acoustic. There is even a hint of industrial rock on 'Blessing' as he muses on environmental collapse while 'No Bitterness' is punchy pop-rock with sleazy texture and plenty of raw emotion.

Review: Animal Collective return with album number eight, their first for Domino. "Strawberry Jam" was recorded by Scott Colburn in Tucson, Arizona. Review: As demonstrated in illustrious fashion on last year's Motion Sickness compilation, UK independent lable Domino are pretty handy when it comes to pairing their roster of artists with interesting remixes. Further evidence is in abundance on Monkey Been To Burntown, a collection of remixes from Animal Collective's last LP Centipede Hz. Gang Gang Dance, Teengirl Fantasy, Traxman and Shabazz Palaces are all involved and draw on the two tracks from that LP ("Monkey Riches" and "New Town Burnout") which influenced the amusing title of this EP. The results are as diverse as you'd expect from such a cast with Traxman's relentless take on "Monkey Riches" the stand out version.

Review: We're led to believe that the gestation period of this, Animal Collective's tenth album to date, was briefer than their earlier work - not that one would notice, given that 'Painting With' displays a band capable of cramming more ideas into one song than most manage in an album. Indeed, the band have scarcely sounded this poppy, upbeat or ebullient, revelling in a collision of polyrhythmic invention, Beach-Boys-on-Venus harmonies, kaleidoscopic sampladelia and sugar-rush intensity. Moreover, for all that their trademark sound has helped shape much of the psychedelia of this century, this foursome are not disposed to rest on their laurels, and this is the sound of them harnessing their creativity as if there were no tomorrow.

Review: The traditional album and EP formats have been on the wane for many years now - we don't consume music in the same was as we once did, that's for true. But in the era of quarantines, forgetting what month it is (let alone the day), and endless attempts to stay entertained, those frameworks make even less sense. Or at least that's what Animal Collective seem to think.

So while this can be filed under Extended Play, it's actually a more complex work befitting out time. Wildly experimental, think a jam session painted in psychedelic hues, where rhythms and ideas converge in a strange, thick soup-like arrangement that evolves, reinvents itself and - perhaps most importantly - keeps ears glued to the speaker for its duration. You'll need to go a long way to find a better source of aural pleasure right now.

Review: Over the course of their lengthy career, Animal Collective have put out a steady stream of albums that veer between experimental, post-rock soundscapes and skewed, left-of-centre indie-pop. Tangerine Reef, their eleventh and latest set, sees them back in experimental mode, delivering a range of fluid, liquid soundscapes inspired by their work with art-science filmmakers Coral Morphologic. All of the album's music was written to soundtrack a film by the latter duo, which can be watched in full on Animal Collective's website. Aurally, the album is indicative of the slowly shifting visuals - built around time-lapse style footage of coral growing - and tends towards the dreamy, otherworldly and drowsy.

Defeat (22:02)
The Challenge (live edit) (9:32)
Review: Defeat is a 22-minute new mega-single by Animal Collective, who by now should need no introduction (but for the rookies, we'll indulge one anyway) as the paradigm-breaking experimental pop band and formed in 1999. 'Defeat' is divided into two parts. The first is a beatless, coming-of-age pop seance, spanning surreal harmonia, whirling organelles and beatless spirallings, lyrically centring on the theme of overcoming adolescence. Part two is far darker, concerning the implicit alienation of a mother restlessly searching for her daughter in a lost dystopia, while horrific, tremolo'ing cellos play out in bad-trip horror flick fashion. Recorded with producer Russell Elevado, violinist Samara Lubelski, cellist Leila Bordreuil, and saxophonist Ben Chapoteau-Katz, it's certain to sate fans of the Collective, who remain committed to an ever-chameleonic bravado.

Review: In 2018 Arctic Monkeys sold out the Royal Albert Hall with a gig raising money for War Child, all proceeds heading for the charity. Reports from the show were excellent, which was to be expected from a band that went from vital enfant terrible to indie headliners while managing to maintain artistic credibility, with frontman Alex Turner now among the most significant figures in UK rock 'n' roll (albeit his side projects, The Last of the Shadow Puppets and Death Ramps, have helped).

Now, two years on, the Sheffield outfit are back with a similar idea, although this time it's a highly sought-after recording from that night, again with the intention of handing over all the cash to War Child. Preceded by sharing a video of the version of '505' they performed at said show, if you've heard that take on the Favourite Worst Nightmare track you know what to expect here. Masters of the live arena, giving it their all.

Review: One of Britain's best-loved and most accomplished pop-rock bands are back with another highly anticipated album. The Car is epic on every level with its adventurously designed tunes, lots of grand orchestration and plenty of easy-to-enjoy and enigmatic songs of love but also doubt. The Sheffield outfit's seventh long player was written by frontman Turner at his home in LA and mixes indie and psychedelic rock, baroque, glam and orchestral rock with production largely taken care of by frequent collaborator James Ford. The title is a nod to the fact that there are many references to cars throughout the lyrics.

Review: There's a playfulness running through Austra's third album which makes the themes behind the record seem even more troubling - toxic relationships, and the negative behavioural pattern we associate with them. The false facade of fine that covers a much darker reality, which could also explain the stark moodiness evident in sections and songs, with the contrast almost jarring. From the chart dance of opener 'Anywayz' or 'I Am Not Waiting', the surrealism of Annie Lennox meeting Immaculate-era Madonna B-side 'All I Wanted', to 'Risk It''s jaunty electronica, the epic mountaintop-siren number 'It's Amazing', the spectacularly crystalline chorals on closing number 'Messiah' and 'Mountain Baby' bridging the gap with its nursery rhyme into icy downtempo formula. 'HiRUDiN' is a broad showcase of style and desire to explore new ideas, fare like this is few and far between.

Review: Katie Stelmanis, the spectrally-voiced and ferociously-talented figure behind maverick electro-pop outfit Austra, set herself the not inconsiderable target of setting out 'a commitment to replace the approaching dystopia' with this third album, yet against all odds she's done a sterling job of marrying the icy binary chill of technology with a very human frailty to emerge with a defiant and emotionally affecting statement of intent. Indelible melody and Stelmanis' extraordinary tones may dominate, yet the sonic landscapes here - equally bracing and beatific - have the rare effect of making the listener hopeful for what 2017 has in store.

With obvious references to Yellow Submarine and 60s/70s psychedelica to be found on "Cows On Hourglass Pond" there's also a route into a alternate sub-pop universe that shares a world one part Postal Service one part Warp Records influences. And fun fact: Dave Portner recorded this album at Laughing Gas Studio in North Carolina on a Tascam 48 half-inch reel-to-reel tape machine, the very same one used for Animal Collective's "Sung Tongs".

Sutphin Boulevard (Bicep remix)

Review: Round two of remixes to accompany the return of Devonte Hynes under his new musical endeavour Blood Orange and further evidence that Domino employ a crack team of scene observers to inform their remix commissioning. Whereas the first release saw In Flagranti and Krystal Klear tackle tracks from the forthcoming Coastal Grooves, everyone's favourite Venetian Bottin shares duties with the fully flexing Irish duo Bicep. The horror disco don calls shotgun with a suitably analogue filled freakout of "The Complete Knock" which keeps the percussive leanings to a minimum to allow the ankle hugging bass and multiple arpeggiated synth directions space to shine. On the flip, Bicep serve up a further taste of their burgeoning production chops, tackling "Sutphin Boulevard" and serving up a sleazy low slung cosmic jam perfectly suited for the sweaty basement spaces the duo spend the early hours of most weekends in.

Review: It's now been ten years since the world first became aware of Dev Hynes, yet through humble beginnings in Test Icicles and Lightspeed Champion, it seems very much like this last decade has been a journey in the direction of this moment. With 'Freetown Sound' he makes his mark firmly as a modern-day auteur whose co-ordinates can be found somewhere between the funk-pop midas touch of Prince and the firebrand iconoclasm of Kendrick Lamar. A dizzying array of styles can be found in the album's compelling meld of the personal and political, yet with as much melodic richness and musical invention to be found here as confrontational food-for-thought, this is a stridently modern and multi-faceted joy.

There's no denying Domino know how to knock 'em down hard. Having already delivered long players from Cat Power, Bob Moses and Villagers just this year alone, they are now turning to Devonte Hynes who is no stranger to the label either. Negro Swan provides the London artist with his fourth studio album which in large draws from the lost souls of '90s pop. It's hard not to hear Michael Jackson, Phil Collins and R&B four pieces all at once in tracks like "Saint", and even "Charcoal Baby", while there's even suggestion of Will Powers' spoken charm in the words to "Family". More Contemporary touches of genre are there in the emotional, beat pop of tracks like "Chewing Gum" and "Nappy Wonder" without forgetting the tropes of neo soul in "Holy Will". A grand album wrapped up in the angel wings of Blood Orange's queer poetic.

Review: Devonte Hynes has long been one of independent music's most unique artists: a multi-instrumentalist, producer and vocalist whose music brilliantly joins the dots between '80s soul, '90s R&B, guitar-based dream-pop, hip-hop, new jack swing and psychedelia. To date, he's not released a duff album, and "Angel Pulse" - his fifth studio set - is another winner. Interestingly, it's said to be a "prequel" to last year's "Negro Swan" and is structured like a hip-hop mix-tape, with tracks segueing into each other and a superbly soulful flow. Its 14 tracks are as evocative and emotion-rich as you'd expect, with an impressive roll call of guest vocalists and MCs swinging by to add their own distinctive twist to Hynes' impeccable backing tracks.

Review: Dev Hynes is the British producer, singer and songwriter who has a disarming sound that mixes r&b, soul and 80s pop. His latest album is another tender and vulnerable affair with drum lead minimalism on tracks like "Baby Florence (Figure)", US hip hop on "Gold Teeth" and the pop tinged "Benzo." It is a joyous listen that recalls the classic homemade mixtape vibes of the 90s, where moods chop and change but are united by a certain joyfulness. Angel's Pulse is a simmering soundtrack to a lovestruck day in the park or a romantic sunset but one that has political undertones when you listen closely enough.

Review: Since first pricking the collective consciousness with their debut 12" in 2012, Canadian duo Bob Moses has been on a fast track to the top. With their evocative vocals and love of bittersweet lyrics, the duo's trademark sound feels like an outsider house-meets-melancholic pop take on fellow Canadians Junior Boys. Certainly, that's the impression given by this much anticipated debut album on Domino. Drowsy, atmospheric and often downbeat, Days Gone By combines their typically hazy take on radio-friendly pop - see the decidedly downbeat but weirdly poignant "Keeping Me Alive" - with more upbeat fare variously influenced by deep house, two-step garage (see "Nothing At All") and classic trip-hop ("Before I Fall").
