Review: Sam 'Binga' Simpson has always been a keen collaborator. In fact, his debut solo album - released under his previous Baobinga alias back in 2011 - was entitled Joint Ventures, and was entirely made up of co-productions. Wasted Days, the belated follow-up, is similarly minded, with the Bristol-based Hull exile being joined by an impressive roster of guest vocalists - Slick Don, TT The Artist, Rider Shafique and Warrior Queen amongst them - with old pals Om Unit and Chimpo also lending a hand. Impressive as it is, the genius of Wasted Days is in its' unique blend of bass music influences, with Simpson impressively fusing classic jungle, experimental D&B, footwork, ragga, dancehall, grime, IDM, smack-house and dubstep to create thrilling new hybrid workouts.

This is their first joint release for a number of years and comes after they have minted a new high end fashion atelier 'Maison Binga-Chimpoix' with their SS21 collection, which presents us this classy 'Ultra Luxe' sound. It is full throttle jungle with classic 90s motifs next to futuristic ideals, rip-snorting bass undermining fierce drum programming and plenty more besides. Our pick of the collection is 'Murda Dem' (feat Slay), an ice cold rhythm with wobbling low ends and precision percussion.

Review: Continuing to lead from the front after years at the top of its game, the next Critical release is a four track collaborative project which features Mefjus, Enei, Upgrade, Chimpo and TI. It's a seriously heavyweight dance floor ready record primed for maximum destruction. Bou & Upgrade kick things off with 'Creeper' a dark and devastating stepper with menacing vocals from Chimpo. Bou then links with Enei for a taught and bouncy cut with steely drums before Mefjus joins in for the drilling, frazzled synth work of 'Wormhole.' Last of all is the 'Road Runner', another red hot riddim with expertly designed bass.

Review: We are real suckers for the work of Dutch producer and drum & bass don Coco Brcye here at Juno HQ. To us, everything he does is gold, and so we're delighted to see him on the influential Critical Music label with a new, grey marbled 12" that packs a punch across his three originals. There is a darkness and menace to opener 'Dial M For Myor' that dissipates and is replaced by hi-tek soul on 'Change Of Heart' with its plunging bass and flurries of snares. 'Daktari' is the deepest and silkiest of the lot, with two remixes bolstering an already cool package.

Review: Kasra's Critical Audio is once again the showcase for the distinct production talents of Russia's Enei, serving up Stonehead, a four track selection presented across this heavy weight double 12 pack. All the hallmarks of an Enei arrangement are here, as the title track sets the mood with rigid click clacking rhythms dextrously rippling over beams of aggressive dark side bass. This sense of aggravation is matched by the vocal sample that literally barks at you. "No Fear" operates on a similar level, Riya's vocal contribution aligned with the tight stepping syncopation. Those seeking some sort of classic drum and bass solace will find respite in the amen heavy tear out sensation of "Moving Fast" and Jubei's rattling refix of "Cracker".

Review: Not seen since his debut album Machines was released on Critical in late 2012, St Petersburg's best Drum and Bass exponent Enei resurfaces in double plated fashion with the Liberation EP. Despite the absence, Aleksei Egorchenkov is on fine form for Critical here, experimenting with new tempos and new collaborators without any hint of sacrificing his skills for raw, next level drum and bass. Fellow Critical producer Emperor, Mancunian vocalist and producer Chimpo and singer songwriter Sam Wills feature across the two slabs of wax, with the tempo shifting "Headtop" featuring Chimpo a standout track.

A chance to showcase a wickedly wide side to his repertoire, few knew how soulful the man behind some of the heaviest Russian tech D&B in recent times could be. Critical have ensured the quality is respected with three precision remixes; Break adds his relaxed, loose-groove charm to the goosebumping "Homeworld", Signal takes the sensuous roller "Just One Look" 20,000 leagues under the sea with pneumatic drums and textured vocals while Fre4knc irons out the gritty creases on the still-thunderous "Iron Curtain" for a well-oiled mechanical funk session. Three serious remixes and a nice reminder to listen to the album again.

Review: Christmas comes early for fans of Critical output as the label presents a luxurious double 12" various artists EP that bristles with talent from their razor sharp roster. Enei, DRS, Ulterior Motive, Phace, Jubei and label boss Kasra himself all feature on the killer Sequence One EP. Enei opens proceedings with the 24th century slab of future funk that is "Obsession", featuring typically dextrous lyrical assistance from MC DRS, whilst Ulterior Motive plunges you into the dark side with the jagged roller "Divergence". The second slab opens with "Freedom Of Filth" an equally jerky, industrially charged hard stepper whilst "The Rift" sees Kasra and Jubei get their sub bass on with immense consequences.

Review: Foreign Concept is back on Critical with his first new EP in three while years. It's a menacing one too that finds him in deadly form. Label mate Enei and vocalist Magugu team up with him for the opening assault - 'Sticks' is a textbook Critical beat with its monstrous sub and stepping groove all finished with a dark and heavy lyrical delivery. The other three cuts all explore a wealth of moods - 'Kultja' is tense, layered up with fine details and story telling motifs, then 'Champagne Nihilist ' is more sweet and uplifting and 'Last Breath' gets physical on crunchy breaks and saw tooth bass lacerations.

Review: Look at that artwork... A surefire sign of intricately unique constructions inside as Hyroglifics continues to smash levels. Every cut taking us deeper into his barbed, angular imagination, "All Talk" is a sci-fi halftime tooth-snapper, "Persuade" is 22nd century grime with skillish flows from the one and only Foreign Beggars, "Vision" is a ping-pong speedway racer with sharp commentary from DRS while "Hanging On You" counters the brutality with a soulful vocal finale. Sensual with just the right amount of ice.

Review: Ivy Lab... The new name for Stray, Sabre and Halogenix who, exactly this time last year, stopped D&B floors in their tracks with the utterly stunning soully roller "Oblique". Featuring Frank Carter III it was unlike anything else being released at the time and was one of the scene's highlights. Here they re-join Frank for an equally stunning follow-up that's every bit as delicate as it is heavy. Frank's honey-like vocals are a delight while the textured tune beneath is deadly simple but overwhelmingly effective. The grumpy upstart "Brat" on the B shows they've still got cohones when they want too. Unadulterated sonic satisfaction.

Review: Critical Music has always operated in its own unique niche within the drum & bass world, and label founder Kasra's own output has been largely responsible for that. This cheeky new 10" is a real heart-wrecher. The drums are sleek and minimal, rubbery and kinetic and make for a seductive groove that is embellished with super soulful vocals from Catching Cairo. On the flip side is a much more dark and deadly stepper: crunchy breaks get you moving and monstrous bass sprays about the mix with real menace. A brilliant two tracker with very different tunes on each side.

Review: MC-focused EPs aren't particularly common in D&B. They're even less common on Critical. In fact this is the first. And it's a delight from the off as Redders teams up with mates old and new for a body of work that's more album than EP. "No Go" is all space-funk oddness with barely a bar in sight, "96 In One" is rapid fire storytelling over a dancehall version, "Dem Ones" is Redders' take on a dry-humping love song while "Sexy Or Sweet" sits somewhere between Toddla T and Barry White. Winding up "Aphasia" sees Redders and Sam flip Ruffhouse's dark tribal stamps into a carnival killer and "Vintage" sees the Bristol-based MC go toe-to-toe with the best MC in the game. One of a kind.

Review: Up and coming DnB producer Rockwell is definitely going to be hot property very soon if he stays on this kind of form. The Noir EP showcases his production nous, as tracks like "Tribes" avoid all the tired old clichés of the genre and instead fill it with a new set of glitchy percussion sounds and intense moody bursts of total frenetic excitement. Tunes like "Stay Calm" are fairly rooted on the dark side, but it's great to hear a producer put the same amount of invention that currently goes into dubstep and use it in DnB. One to watch, get involved sooner than later.

Having had a variety of releases on Metalheadz and Renegade Hardware amongst others, Sabre's clearly at the top of his game right now as these dark and fascinating mixes prove.
While Peril fleshes out the beat with blazing hats and punchy snares, Sabre opts to pare things down on the majority of mixes, staying true to a gritty and grimy sound palette that oozes menace. Marvel for example is a tech-step stew of different dubby atmospheric textures all blended together seamlessly. Curious comes in slower at around 125bpm but doesn't feel disjointed from the rest of the album, such is the strength of Sabre's solid production across all of these tracks. Have It Your Way again keeps things minimal yet compelling, with every single percussion hit sparkling over the mix with crystal clarity. The stuttering beats on The Intrepid alone make this a collection well worth investigating if you enjoy your D&B glitchy, progressive and full of techy wonders.

Review: Serum and Critical Records boss Kasra join forces for three tracks that see the former's sharp edged sonics and the more atmospheric, experimental textures of the latter working in perfect harmony. 'Noodles' has a serious sci-fi vibe that harks back to the early days of Metalheadz, set to work across a sturdier, more rolling selection of steady, heavy beats. The shuddering bass and choppy rhythms of 'Fade Out' give space for plenty of modular synth action - ultimately a feature of all three tracks here - and affairs are topped off with an attitude=heavy spoken word sample. 'Blaze Heat' has a more hip-hop slanted vibe, slotting in neatly to the wall of drum & bass breakbeats, but again the over-riding focus is some fresh, unheard wigging out in the higher frequencies. Nice work all round, and a personnel combination with a lot to recommend it.

Whiskers deep into what's shaping up to a very bright career he returns to Critical with another beautiful EP. "Parallax" is a tension-sprung dark funk groove that wriggles with just the right amount of restraint. "Downfall", meanwhile, takes to faraway lands with its hurricane soul rolls and Zoe's delicate vocals. For a grand climax watch as "Fearless" whips up a neuro storm; all layered basses, reversed ghost tones and a wonky bass scuff that shouldn't work but really does. Another absolute A++ for Signal.
